dondoboy
Patterson Hood Interview
Vacant Horizon
well, DBT albums are too long and very difficult to get into for me. if one just loves patterson's songs then DBT are heaven. i'm still waiting for them to do a tight 10 song album that totally rocks. a masterpiece with 4 cooley songs, 4 patterson songs and 2 shonna songs. there's a point of diminished returns in song writing i think. you've gotta write a bunch of shit to get to the gems. for me, it's about every 3rd song. given that, patterson really needs to pick his best songs. i love that song righteous path from BTCD. he wrote that at the end of recording that album. it seems that his gems just pop up after he has been 'working' on writing other songs. i hope he can trust that and just take the gems for the new album. cooley doesn't write much, so any song from him is usually good. dondoboy
It ceratinly seems like he has a lot of projects at once. Including family. I'm excited to hear the new one, but I agree that they could use an editor sometimes.
CortezTheKiller
i'm still waiting for them to do a tight 10 song album that totally rocks. They tried that. It's called A Blessing and a Curse. It didn't go too well.
Moss
Nice to hear the new DBT is going to be more rocking. Maybe hearing how good the new Isbell album is will challenge them a bit.
CortezTheKiller
Maybe hearing how good the new Isbell album is will challenge them a bit. It's good, but I wouldn't say it's as good as Brighter Than Creations Dark. In these parts, I know I'll be in the minority, but I firmly believe this.

In these parts, I know I'll be in the minority, but I firmly believe this. I'm not sure I disagree. I really like both. I think the new Isbell does keep the bar raised though.   I was disappointed in both of those albums. Those are some high standards you got.
bleedorange
Those are some high standards you got. Admittedly they are. DBT's three album run with Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, and The Dirty South is about as good as it gets. These last two albums have paled in comparison. Plus, I prefer their first two over their last two. Isbell's songs with DBT were highlights on each album they appeared on. His solo stuff hasn't affected me in the same way. Perhaps I like him better in small doses.

Perhaps I like him better in small doses. That's exactly how I feel. His solos stuff doesn't even touch his contributions to DBT. His solo is just lacking in appeal. solace
i've started to notice often that people who aren't big on southern soul infused rock don't tend to dig on Jason's solo stuff. i can understand it, but it's unfortunate because lyrically his solo albums are just as strong if not stronger than his DBT output. i guess if you want more of the rock or country I can understand preferring even recent DBT over it. I love his contributions to Decoration Day and Dirty South but I loved Cooley and Hood's stuff much more. His Blessing & a Curse offerings were throwaways to me. I really liked his first album and love his latest. I was glad that Jason was in DBT but I'm not necessarily missing him in the band either. It's great having him release full albums and touring the little clubs.
lamradio
Feb 14 is my favorite DBT song. Â There I said it..

At least, not for me. There have been a few really great songs on his two solo albums. I'm just not sure he's a strong enough songwriter to fill an entire album. Not yet, anyway. It's great having him release full albums and touring the little clubs.  i like Jason's solo shows a LOT, but i would be lying if I said I enjoyed DBT shows without him just as much. just like how much more I liked them live after he joined vs. before (in fact I honestly was bored to death the first time I saw them live before Jason joined). i guess i really just prefer his vocals by a very wide margin vs. Patterson & Cooley's, he's got a great soulful voice for someone his age and his lyrics just hit me way more than Patterson & Cooley's subject matter. I don't think that's it, though. At least, not for me. There have been a few really great songs on his two solo albums. I'm just not sure he's a strong enough songwriter to fill an entire album. Not yet, anyway. for you  i mean compare Jason's solo records to Patterson's? or Cooley's solo work? no contest for me honestly. there's only 3, maybe 4 songs i don't like between his 2 solo records so far. not saying they're all golden, but very few throwaways either. In A Razor Town, Dress Blues, Chicago Promenade, The Magician, Sunstroke, and No Choice in the Matter are up there with DBT's best songs for me (maybe Shotgun Wedding too). diff strokes for diff folks... with 3 primary songwriters/singers/guitarists you're never EVER ever going to have a consensus in any band like DBT. i'm sure there's plenty of folks out there who feel Cooley is far and away the best songwriter & singer in the band too, fwiw. solace
they weren't his best no, but i have a feeling he was saving much of it for his solo record honestly, which was well underway at that point. they weren't my least fave songs on that record tho either...
bleedorange
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I would put Outfit, Decoration Day, Goddamn Lonely Love, Danko/Manuel, Never Gonna Change, and The Day John Henry Died above anything on his solo albums. That is why they have been disappointing.
