Jesusetc84
I wasn't alive 27 years ago :-( I got my first exposure to The Violent Femmes at sleep away camp in middle school; the counselors had a band and they always played "Blister in the Sun." I want to say I finally bought the album in college. Great record. Will probably spin it later. Thanks for bring it up.
jff
Yup, still awesome. I can hardly believe this is 27 years old. This album holds up better than just about anything I was listening to at the time. My buddy Rafael loaned me his cassette (in exchange I loaned him my copy of Black Flag's "First Four Years"). My parents got ahold of the tape before I listened to it and withheld it from me, based only on the name of the band. They didn't seem to have a problem with my Circle Jerks and Suicidal Tendencies tapes, though.
Moss
Or like my local radio station says: "Why can't I get, just one kuff, why can't I get, just one kuff"...
bjorn_skurj
Must have something to do with kcul.
imsjry
Lost my virginity to that album. To much information? Sorry. Needless to say it has always held a special place in my heart. Is that a good idea for a thread?

Ghost of Electricity
still revs Brian Ritchie up too (at least it did a couple of years ago).
uncool2pillow
I find it dated, but listen to it for nostalgia's sake from time to time. In my HS Drama class, my group did an interpretive dance to Add It Up. It pretty much kicked ass.
anthony
I have many drunken memories of me and my friends yelling "DAYYYYYYYYYY AFTER TODAYYYYYYYY...." We used to (drunkenly) yell "ADD IT UP" at any bar cover band we would run across.
GtrPlyr
We used to cover this song in a band I was in many moons ago. It was always a fun one to play, and got the crowds going every time.
Sir Stewart
No Violent Femmes song has aged as well as 'American Music', to me.
Oil Can Boyd
I was just lookign at the Violent Femmes' website and under the trivia section there is some pretty funny stuff.Violent Femmes trivia (scroll partway down). A flavor: * Kinks guitarist Dave Davies came to see the Femmes. They asked him to sit in on "Add It Up" telling him there were only two chords. Davies declined, saying, "That's one chord too many!" * The Femmes showed up at a gig in L.A. and were surprised to find American game show host Pat Sajak in the dressing room. When they asked him why he was there he replied, "I am a big fan of yours." * Another time VF went into their dressing room and crooner Tony Bennett was there. The Femmes asked if he knew their music and Bennett said, "No." VF were puzzled what he was doing there.

Oil Can Boyd
Saw this on the Boston Globe website: Before his gig at the Middle East the other night, Violent Femmes frontman Gordon Gano dropped by Mullen's Boston office, treating employees of the ad agency to an unplugged version of the Femmes classic "Blister in the Sun." Why? Gano is touring with Bill and Brendan Ryan - a.k.a. the Ryan Brothers - who are pals with Mullen creative director Chris Brady. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FELRFfyAYy0
