WILCO -- 10/09/09 Dallas

Recommended Posts

Probably my overall second favorite. I think I liked Palladium 2007 hair better. Probably due to company, the fact that we were closer, and getting to hear On and On and On were nice perks for me personally. Loved hearing Kamera/Cars Can't Escape though. I dunno, coin flip.

This was definitely the most fun I've seen them have onstage in all the times I've seen them. Seeing Tweedy striking rock star poses to Elvis '68 comeback music in a gold lame shirt has GOT to make you smile. The new songs sound great live. I'm hoping some tapers were at the show. I'd like to relive this one a few times... My Wilco (the shirt) Show.

Nice, so there's maybe a tiny bit of hope for tonight? Two nights in a row might be pushing it, I realize.

I hope someone took pictures of the gold shirt.

I dunno...It kind of seemed like that might be becoming part of their set now. :thumbup

And of all shows to decide not to bring my camera! Well, at least I sort of helped broker the shirt exchange when Jeff handed me his shirt while the gold lamé guy was taking his off... :blush

no pict of the gold silk shirt but here but a nice, spot on review from the Dallas Morning News.

This band never disappoints live. :thumbup

We had a nice chat with Nels after the gig.... about the vintage sit com the Addams Family. He's quite the fan of Gomez Addams. Saying if more people had the passion for their true love as Gomez does for Morticia the world would be a better place. :cheers

longtime wilco fan. my take on last night...curious to hear your feedback. this isn't a debate, i'm not "right"...just one person's opinion.

Wilco has become one of the most confounding live acts in music.

They have the complete package: songwriting (songcraft, melody & lyrics), musical chops, a good catalogue and whatever “it” is. Yet all but one time, I have walked away from a wilco show with a slight disconnect.

I always thought it was nils cline not 100% fitting in. but with 2 albums featuring nils (3 since he was brought in for the ghost is born tour, so they are his songs as much as anyone’s), nils has finally meshed with the band. In fact the musical highlights were all nils-led. They have never sounded more comfortable and relaxed.

And maybe that was what was a little strange about wilco last night. their appeal has always been a sense of brooding, anxiety and discomfort hidden behind the pretty music. It was so fun to watch this twangy rock band become an art rock band.

I never thought I’d ever say this, but wilco these days could stand to take themselves a little more seriously.

Let me back up: we wouldn’t be having this conversation if it wasn’t for everything they do right. there were long stretches of transcendence, where the music takes hold of you and you are hanging on every note. I am your face, impossible germany, handshake drugs, hate it here, bull black nova, theologians, hummingbird, can’t stand it (!) were just awesome in that “only wilco can write and play music like this” way. Mixed in with rockers like I’m the man who loves you, im a wheel, casino queen (!!) and slow ballads like company in my back, one wing and you never know, you got a really nice blend of tempo and tone…the complete wilco if you will. It was just about an A+ setlist really.

But they also have an uncanny ability to tear down the 4th wall and go from WILCO to “wilco”, 6 dorks playing dork rock. Tweedy taking a 15 sec joke and turning it into a 3 min rant. Trading shirts with the guy in the gold lame shirt? Funny. Talking about it after every song? not. let Kingpin be a crowd interaction song without forcing the crowd to clap and whoop. Let jesus etc be a singalong without prompting the crowd and asking if they can sing louder than Austin. And the rock star poses from glen before I’m the man and pat “townsend” sansome, who can’t play a guitar chord without a windmill? Wilco (the single)? Come on. Why play 2 encores that are really sets? For the “please come back” screams from the crowd?

And the crowd. Oh god the crowd. Wilco has become the indie DMB…what was once an endearing crowd of Johnny Every-Bloggers and their cutter girlfriends has turned into chicks dragging their disinterested meathead boyfriends and 16 year old indie starter kits. Skinny black jeans have been replaced by old navy cargo pants. I actually miss the hard core shoe gazer wilco fans. right or wrong, wilco just isn't perceived as cutting edge anymore. whether blame goes to the band or the fanbase on this who knows. but the vibe was different.

Wilco has everything they ever wanted. A stable lineup, a sober tweedy, a big loyal fanbase. And lord knows they deserve it. I just think they are one of those bands who are better when they are suffering for their art/have something to prove/etc.

i miss brooding wilco. i just can't lie.

That said, they played almost 30 songs last night. you'll never say they mail it in, that's for damn sure

Pieholden, I disagree with just about everything you said after your opening remarks. Tweedy interacting with the crowd is what makes the show that much more enjoyable. And I hate how so called fans point out that things were better back in the "glory days". Fuck that, I'm just glad Wilco is gaining popularity. Period. I don't care if the crowd is not what it used to be. The place was rockin' last night and it was nice to see a capacity crowd come out and hear one of the best bands around.

How about when someone who obviously really likes the band gets called a "so called fan" just because he has a few complaints? Where do you stand on that?

I don't agree with everything "pieholden" said, but he wrote a thoughtful review and deserves credit for making some interesting points beyond just "the show was awesome", etc.

a few things:

1) i wasn't seeing wilco back in the AM days. think the first show i saw was 2002 or 03? i don't mean to big time anyone with tales of yore.

2) "Tweedy interacting with the crowd is what makes the show that much more enjoyable"

i disagree. can we share of love of jeff's artistry but disagree on his stage presence? i like him better singing than talking. and i feel that way about most musicians. ryan adams can KILL a show with banter. music is art. it puts me in a "place"...extended stage banter disrupts that for me.

3) watch the IATTBYH doc...that was a group of guys willing to destroy friendships over art! then it seemed the world caught on and wilco was this "serious" "important" band. suddenly every critic has an opinion, wilco owes the music world something with each release. tweedy and wilco reaction to all of this? taking themselves a little less seriously. having more fun. i'm not talking professionalism. i'm talking artistic intent.

i'm curious if you agree. if you do, can you say whether you like or dislike this change? for me, i miss that space in time when the world thought wilco was the most important band on the planet and wilco took themselves just as seriously. ps i don't think they were happy, i think being "the most important band in the world" is taxing.

just a discussion, again i'm notlooking for an internet fight.

Yet all but one time, I have walked away from a wilco show with a slight disconnect.

That's where you lost me. It sounds like you have a picture in your mind of what you want this band to be, and they just don't live up to it.

They are what they are. This year I've seen Wilco at Red Rocks, Dublin Vicar Street (twice), and Iowa City. Two of those nights were transcendent, and the other two were just a whole lot of fun. No disconnects. I also don't recall looking at the crowd and passing judgment on their coolness at any point. We did meet really interesting fun people at every show we attended.

I guess I just don't understand what the problem is, except maybe you need to find a younger, hungrier, cooler band who can live up to your very demanding standards. Or relax your standards just a bit for this band.

When you start paying attention to the fans at a gig is when attention from the stage is compromised... Who gives a shit about the crowd? Did you dig the music? If not, maybe it's time to move on to another band that fits your style?

I liked everything about last nights gig, including my interaction with the chicks dragging their disinterested meathead boyfriends and 16 year old indie starter kits. Although that's not the description i would have given to the people i met.

i disagree. some of my favorite bands are older bands that have maintained that edge. Radiohead, Widespread Panic, Black Crowes, hell the Stones. i am not smart enough to tell you what it is they have done that wilco hasn't.

wilco is worthy of otherworldy expectations. you disagree?

i was behind dirk nowitzki and kyle kozar. neither were into the band but blocking my view. if i was 6'5" i wouldn't have cared!

and as for the people who say that a crowd doesn't impact a concert experience...go to a phish show and dont mention "hippie" or "weed" in your review. whether its a Rage show, a blink182 show, michael mcdonald or rush, the crowd is totally a part of the experience.

wilco is comprised of human beings. your concert experience is your interaction with them. you aren't also impacted by the human beings around you?

The Stones? Seriously? We live on different planets. They've been a prancing parody of a rock band since about 1985.

No, of course not. My experience is different from yours. They've lived up to my lofty expectations. Wish I could have had your Dallas ticket. Sounds like I would have enjoyed the show more.

It was a very good show despite being about the worst venue one can imagine. As the newspaper review noted, Jeff's voice was great, and the best he's sang in the dozen or so Wilco concerts I've seen. I thought it was good that Jeff addressed recent complaints about the setlists, explaining that he strives to make half the songs in the setlist different from what Wilco last played in that city. A highlight for me was hearing Cars Can't Escape for the first time in concert, now if I could just hear A Magazine Called Sunset and check it off, too!

A Cherry Ghost - for me, a lot of the edge was lost when the late Jay Bennett left Wilco. Much of the fun in the Palladium show came during the Summerteeth/YHF/AM music. Casino Queen was a blast.

Pieholden, you have summed up my thoughts on Wilco (live) perfectly. I had the same experience after the Red Rocks show but failed to explain myself as well. Of course I was "shot down" rather emphatically after I said I did not really enjoy the show. I would be willing to bet there are a lot more Wilco fans that feel the same way but go silent on this board. In fact, the last two large venue Wilco show's I've seen have let me down. I have caught them live in Europe over different year's and have enjoyed those show's more. Maybe it's a smaller venue, smaller crowd. I'll reserve my attendance and money for Jeff's solo shows. In terms of the fans, my advice is to struggle to get as close as you can to the stage and ignore everyone else. Wilco has become "trendy" for lack of a better word, nothing we can do about it. I will say I still enjoy there music and play all of thier albums on a weekly basis.

trand-

thanks for your kind words. but i dont feel as though i was "shot down"...there are no right or wrong answers here.

i think i got a littl verbose. what i'm really trying to say is wilco's stage antics do not compliment their music, which i think is too good and too serious for silliness.

that's all.

and yes, put me in the crowd that wishes they opened the setlist a little more. but i think that about every band out there.

Just listened to some of the awesome quality live recording of this Dallas show. Saw them there last time and it was a blast, wish I could have been there again last night.

Sounds like they were on the money, setlist issues be damned.

Just enjoy...

But instead I will next time break out my scarf, skinny jeans, put on eyeliner.

No I won't. I'm 50 years old. I wear fucking cargo pants.
