Via Chicago's Top 100 Albums of All Time: Summer 2010 edition

This is hard! Even if I get my list narrowed to 50, ranking everything is going to be a bitch. For example, how much more do I like Summerteeth than Decoration Day? I have no idea. I just know I really, really love them both.

Hey folks, just a reminder that you've still got three weeks to get your picks in. I've got some really cool/interesting submissions so far, but I'd like to see a lot more! :yes

In a couple of weeks, if things haven't picked up, I'm going to start leaning on some people. :pirate

What a ridiculously hard thing this started out to be, but once I stopped trying to list the technical, cultural, historical "best" albums, and just made a list of the records that have personally meant the most to me, it was a lot of fun. Trust me, I don't dispute that "Pink Moon" is better than the first KISS record, but that first KISS record meant the world to me when I was a little kid. I'm embaressed to put Meatloaf on the list, but only one album by the Beatles, Neil Young, Dylan; but that fucking Meatloaf album was great for crusing the city with my best friend when I was a young teenager. So, yeah this is my list and nearly every album included here has some sort of personal connection to some part of my life, even the obscure punk/hardcore records on here that no one on this board probably knows.

A few other thoughts: My list breaks down as follows: 1960's - 5 records, 1970's - 21 records, 1980's - 14 records, 1990's - 7 records, 2000 on - 3 records, with YHF being the newwest thing on this list. 1973 and 1977 are the most heavily represented years here, and I can think of a dozen more from those years that would've made the next 50. Despite what the list looks like I do like music other than rock and punk, but I guess those are just my meats and potatoes. I'm also not racist or sexist, I guess I just like dudes in r'n'r bands more than I realized prior to compiling this. Thanks again for compiling this insanity, Greg

Sorry for neglecting this project for a while, folks! I've been working on a different project, now completed. :)

B, I've received a total of 11 peoples' votes... which is not enough! Some of you haven't been notified yet that I've received your votes, but look for that this weekend, at the latest. Those of you who haven't voted yet, but have posted in this thread (not just if you posted a list, if you've posted anything at all) can expect to hear from me soon, nudging you to send in a list. Same goes for people who submitted a list for the last one, I'll nudge those folks again, too.

I'm also considering extending the deadline, if I don't hear from a few more people. It just doesn't mean as much if we don't get a decent number of votes in. I'm hoping for a big rush of votes this week, though!!! :w00t

Apologies to all who were so prompt in getting their lists in, but...

I will not be able to get results out today, as promised. :( This project, and the spreadsheet, have gotten away from me.

I'll make every effort to get it out to you all in the next week.

I'd feel worse about being so late with this, if it appeared that anyone at all had even noticed that I hadn't done it yet. :P

For those of you who participated, I appreciate your enthusiasm, and the thoughtfulness that went into your lists. As always, I'm impressed with the breadth of musical tastes on VC. :yes I'd like to have seen a few more people contributing their top 50s, but I know I didn't lean on people as much this time as I did the last go-round, so I'll definitely take at least partial responsbility for that. Next time, though, I want 100s of lists, damn it! :pirate

Thanks for putting this together, gogo!

Good list, folks.

Biggest surprise:

Having John Cale - Paris, 1919 @ Number 21!

:pirate

So, without further ado, your (statistically meaningless) VC Top 100 Albums, Summer 2010 edition results!!!

Wow...thanks SO much for taking this on, Maudie! I'll go ahead and add spreadsheet savant to your already-impressive list of skills. :thumbup

So how many top-50 lists were ultimately turned in? Sorry I missed out on this exercise the first time. For me, it's most interesting to look at people's individual lists as opposed to what ultimately garnered the most votes (not that that's not interesting as well), so I'm going to post mine...

P.S. Cheers to the other person who voted for Rodriguez's Cold Fact. I'd love to see the rest of your list! :cheers
