PopTodd
Hold Me Up was a great record.I think that I was at this show:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b5WHDZYeLc
lamradio
I saw them open for The Rolling Stones in 97 (i think). They blew the stones off the stage... *ducking to avoid getting e-smacked in the head*
bjorn_skurj
Just don't start trying to prove Maroon 5 didn't always suck, or I will have to refute you.
yermom
Because sucking is totally subjective and we're all free to express our opinions and all that jazz, I'm going to put my ballot in the "always have, always will suck" hat.

The dolls just put on a great no frills rock n roll show.. I was never a big fan but they just knew how to do it... The Stones on the other hand, it was just kind of meh... I don't know if it was because they were having an off night, but they were just loose, sound was terrible, and it was just overall.. meh..... And.. You saw The Cars?? I hate you! LouisvilleGreg
I have a tough time getting behind any performer being barefoot on stage. It just doesn't sit well with me. Jim James of MMJ used to do that as well and it distracted the hell out of me at their shows.

I saw them in Louisville on that tour and they were the tits!

They blew the stones off the stage... *ducking to avoid getting e-smacked in the head* I saw them open up for the Stones in Chicago in 1999. At the time, I thought the Goo Goo's were a bit drunk or something - they were not very good. I have seen the Stones play better than they did that night, though. I remember seeing the Goo Goo's play on Letterman and at the end of the song they jumped into a kiddie pool filled with something - that's was pretty fun.
tinnitus photography
that clip makes GGD seem like a grade C Lemonheads. definitely preferable to what they turned into, but nothing that would warrant further listening on my part.
Moss
Yeah, I don't know. Trying too hard to be Paul Westerberg or something in that clip. I'm going to need more proof. I think I would listen to Wang Chung over Goo Goo dolls.
cgoodwin22
that video reminds me of the cast from Saved By The Bell trying to sound punk rock.
PopTodd
They did try too hard to be The Replacements. But that (one) album had some great pop songs in that vein.I don't like anything else that they've done, really, but that one album -- Hold Me Up -- was pretty great.Of course, if you don't like this song, then you disagree with me. Oh well.

Oh well.I agree about the greatness of the early GGDs. Fun band playing fun songs. I got into them when I happened to catch "There You Are" on 120 Minutes -- picked up the CD for $5 and fell in love with the disc. I'd even say the next album Superstar Car Wash has a bunch of great songs on it, too. They were probably my favorite band for a couple of years there. Then they had their big hit and realized they could make millions singing the same song over and over. Such a shame.

I think I would listen to Wang Chung over Goo Goo dolls. I was thinking Anthony Kiedis. At least I've learned that once upon a time the Goo Goo Dolls rocked. Never knew. Moss
I think listening to part of one song does not allow me to make any kind of determination on the matter. And PopTodd has a good taste in music so I need to give it another shot with an open mind.
Lammycat
I never heard/listened to the GGDs when they were around (are they still?) but heard a couple tunes a few years ago that I thought were decent. I don't care about the imitation shit or who folks think they were trying to be or whatever. The tunes were decent. Decent pop imo. I don't know much about them at all and haven't looked at PT's clip but shit it's just tunes. Plus, I'm a sucker for a catchy riff with sappy lyrics.
LouisvilleGreg
one of the weirdest things i've seen posted here. what the hell does it matter? odd. it's my inner punk rocker associating barefoot musicians with hippies, and punks hate hippies, so there you go. or to be more reasonable, i have serious issues that should probably be evaluated by a professional. Lammycat
Punks and hippies are soooo similar it's scary. Believe it.

Greg Ginn was/is a Deadhead. So was Rollins. So was Navarro and Farrell. And the Meat Puppets. And dudes from the Buttholes. And a shitload of others in that vein. It ain't a stretch. Sir Stewart
Way back in the day, my skater friends, who were into bands like The Descendents, Gang Green and The Meatmen, were into The Goo Goo Dolls for a split second. That's all I got.
Guest Jules
someone told me there's a thread here regarding the Goo Goo Dolls.
