howardox
Is it me, or does this song sound a bit like Heavy Metal Drummer?
alecrothman
Maybe a bit like HMD. But man, I haven't heard much Deerhunter in the past year and that sounds completely different from what I remember them sounding like. I dig very much.
Moss
I kind of see what you are saying but it's a stretch for me to hear HMD in this song. Halcyon Digest is in my top 10 of the year so far for sure. Really liking it. There is some good video up at Pitchfork right now of some live stuff. Deerhunter on the interface
Plumplechook
Seriously - how damn good is 'Halycon Digest'? It just pipped The National's 'High Violet' as my album of the year so far. Covers lots of bases from ethereal soundscapes to a couple of out-and-out pop gems. It really is quite a beautiful album and certainly moves the band up to a whole new level. Highlights for me are the final track 'He Would Have Laughed' - a slowly unfolding seven minute gem, and 'Desire Lines' - the epic three minute guitar coda at the end of that song is totally hypnotic. moxiebean
I agree - "Halcyon Digest" tops my list for best album of the year so far. They seem have a knack for mining some of my favorite musical cues (Doolittle-era Pixies, Jesus & Mary Chain, 80's jangle) and bending it into something special. Moss
Holy shit. Did anyone see Deerhunter on Fallon? Interesting to say the least: http://stereogum.com/1307491/deerhunter-monomania-fallon-performance/mp3s/
lamradio
Holy shit. Did anyone see Deerhunter on Fallon? Interesting to say the least: http://stereogum.com/1307491/deerhunter-monomania-fallon-performance/mp3s/ I listened to/watched it on a shitty phone speaker so I haven't truly heard it yet. I liked it though. Bradford is certainly a weird dude. This explains the severed finger: On April 2nd, 2013 the band performed the song "Monomania" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Singer Bradford Cox premiered his alter-ego which he called "Connie Lungpin". Cox wore a black wig covering his face, bandaged his finger as if it had been amputated, and wore vampire like teeth. This performance brought much attention to the band, especially the finger, as many wondered if his finger had actually been amputated.
tinnitus photography
i saw Bradford last year as Atlas Sound, and he did "Tonight's The Night" four times during his set. it was actually pretty cool.
lamradio
Got to watch the performance on a better sound system last night, and I really liked it. Seems to be following in the footsteps of the last album with the more ear friendlier sound than their early stuff, but still having the Deerhunter grit. Very excited about the new record now. lamradio
Bradford Cox is certainly an intriguing character. Interesting interview: http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/9122-deerhunter/ Indie rock is such a bratty culture, and I don't see a lot of ugly people in it, either. I feel very proud to be hideous. Thank God I don't look like every other fucking dude wearing their girlfriend's fucking jeans out there on stage. Awesome..
jff
I'm proud that they're my hometown band, and I'm psyched to get their new record. Even though I haven't liked everything they've done, I think they're wildly ambitious and I love that.

Yeah, I also sorta consider them my hometown band (even though I don't live in Atlanta), I'm only about an hour and half drive from there, and go there regularly I also don't dig all of their stuff but Halcyon Digest is brilliant, one of the best albums of the last decade or so. I also really like what I have heard so far from the new record.
tinnitus photography
this would be a good show:http://www.atpfestival.com/events/deerhunter.php i've always been interested in Deerhunter, but not a huge fan..seen them 3 times, and Atlas Sound three times...i do like his outlook. Even though I haven't liked everything they've done, I think they're wildly ambitious and I love that. as much as I do love Monomania (probably my #2 or #3 album on the year so far), it's a lot less ambitious and a bit more "same-y" than the last two records... I haven't heard it yet, but the fact that they're trying to go in a different direction this time is part of what makes them ambitious.

There's a sampler currently on Spotify with a couple tunes, including the song Monomania. Certainly grittier than anything off of their last record. The last minute of the song is nothing but incredibly loud noise and feedback.. Thought it was going to blow my speakers.. lol

lamradio
I haven't heard the whole record yet to make an accurate judgement call, but from what I have heard, it's definitely in the same ballpark as their last record, but much grittier. Maybe they have found their comfort spot.. for now at least.

twoshedsjackson
Bradford Cox is certainly an intriguing character. Interesting interview: http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/9122-deerhunter/ Awesome..Ugh. You know, after hearing good things about Deerhunter for so long, I finally grabbed a couple of their albums last night. I was enjoying most of the music - interesting stuff - and then I read that interview. Cox comes across as an insufferable, attention-craving ass. I've known guys like him: always "on", thinking they're the new Oscar Wilde. They never shut up. Dickheads all. I'm going to continue delving into Deerhunter with the hope that his music isn't as artificial and contrived as his personality seems to be.

lamradio
he's actually a super nice guy. Thats what I've heard too. There's nothing wrong with a little showboating. It's part of his art, his persona.. At least he isn't posing for a gap commercial or something..
twoshedsjackson
That's good to hear. It doesn't entirely cancel out the "pay attention to me" factor, but it helps.
bigloop
Monomania is streaming on NPR.org http://www.npr.org/2013/04/21/177759938/first-listen-deerhunter-monomania?sc=tw&cc=twmp%3C/a%3E
