No one has gotten more annoying in the course of their career than Lucinda. I totally agree. She was a great singer songwriter who has just gotten ridiculous.

Personally, I think she got really lazy in her songwriting over the last several years. Lots of inexplicable repetition and ponderous lyrics. She used to write terrific songs, but I don't think she puts much effort into it any more.

Just my opinion.

The XX. I find their music dull, boring, and emotionless.

Agreed. Have never made it through the album once. I've fallen asleep every damn time. Thank goodness I tried listening at home before in the car...

The highly praised artist I absolutely cannot stand is Prince. All these people rave about him and call him a genius. Hardly. Listen to his stuff: it sounds 100% dated. There is no Prince song from the 80s that still sounds fresh now: it's 100% 80s. Sure, he has a few decent tunes but for every decent one there are about a dozen absolute junk. Also, he is an INCREDIBLE blowhard. Everything out of his mouth drips with self-importance so it makes it even easier for me to absolutely despise any of his music. Don't get me wrong: he's a great guitar player and I could watch him play all day as long as 1) he wasn't singing or talking, just playing, and 2) it was NOT his song (except for maybe Purple Rain).

Compare her early and mid career material to her more recent stuff. He songs were great and covered by other artists. Now she sounds whinney and her songs just aren't that great. It happens. She has had a nice long career. Mostly I just really don't like her voice anymore.

Not even the biggest Prince fans out there will deny either of these. He's a massive prick in desperate need of an editor/producer. That's pretty much all he is.

That and probably the most talented musician in pop music history.

He's very good and all, but I will never go along with that shit.

I will, and I'm not even that much of a fan. The guy's amazing when he wants to be.

Maybe not THE most talented, but he'd be a finalist for the award.

well, i think it's telling that his best song's riff was written by wendy or lisa (purple rain). he was best with the revolution. what's sad about him is that his recent Target only albums look like cheap homemade cd art from a PC.

Don't get me started on Prince album art. It's never been good, except Around The World In A Day. But the Target only package is a new low. That shit aside, Lotusflower (one of the Target discs) was, all in all, a very solid album. Lots of good stuff on there.

Not buying that he needed the Revolution. He still wrote and played almost everything on those records. Beginning of Purple Rain is a glaring exception, of course.

I'll give him this much...of all the people who are known for playing all (or most) of the instruments on (some of) their albums, he's the best guitarist.

Just a reminder, Stevie Wonder still walks the earth. That guy could wipe his ass with Prince and it'd be the best day of Prince's life.

Definitely!

You put him head to head against anyone in his field and you'll have a hard time finding someone who can best him when you consider what he brings to the table:

- Is adept at guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, vocals and dozen or so other instruments

- Wrote and produced some of the most catchy and inventive music in pop history

- Is very diverse musically, incorporating a lot of genres into his music (Soul, Funk, Rock, Jazz, hip-hop...)

- Puts on one of the best live shows you're likely to see

- Purple Rain & Sign 'o' the Times

This guy gets it.

I think I'd place Prince near the top of the heap when it comes to multi-instrumental technical skill. I think Stevie Wonder beats him there, and Paul McCartney is probably his equal.

To me, that's Prince's most admirable and unique trait. Nothing else about him, as an artist or as a man, is particularly uncommon.

Ah, yes, thanks for the reminder: may I add Sufjan Stevens to my list.

Oh you mean the man with SDD (Swing Deficit Disorder)?? Every time they play Chicago on XRT it drives me nuts. For a guy with such a musical background he seems to have no idea what syncpation is. I guess I should listen to his new album (if someone GAVE me a copy), because I really want to know if he is still as non-swinging as ever.
