choo-choo-charlie
I was listening to the stream of the Tipitina's show on wilcoworld.net today, and thought that Jeff's vocals didn't sound nearly as good on "A Magazine Called Sunset" as they did when the track was first cut...10 years ago? I felt the same way about "Nothingsevergonnastandinmywayagain." I'm all for gems like these appearing in setlists when I see them live, but at the same time, I couldn't help but feel that I'd rather listen to an older take on the tracks. On the other hand, there are some older tunes that still sound great, and probably always will. Maybe it's just because it's a webcast. Does anyone else ever get that vibe? Guest Speed Racer
Voices change, and voices get tired when they're on tour. To say that his voice sounds different than it did 10 years ago is a simple truth; it also sounds better some nights than others. That doesn't mean his voice will forever not "work" with old songs. But we all know how I feel about what the current line-up does to old songs.

As I said, perhaps it's just this particular show, this particular webcast, this particular version, that didn't quite measure up. "Too Far Apart" is a good alternative, though. I dig the A.M. version, but I really love the way the band has played it and the way Jeff has sang it in recent years.
u2roolz
I really love what the band did with Blood Of The Lamb. I wish that they'd rework some more tunes along those lines. I kind of wish that they'd do something to Jesus, Etc. to make it sound more like the album. Love the song, but it was my piss break at Solid Sound due to hearing it at every show. They should also be more open to performing both versions of Sunken Treasure on a tour. It seems like once they do it one way early in the tour, you won't ever hear the other version. It's the singalong that I grow tired of. And I really love both takes on "Sunken Treasure." Would love to hear the current lineup play the old arrangement sometime...or bust into the "dueling banjos" jam on "Casino Queen."

parisisstale
I think just about every older track "works" better than most of W(TA).

Autumnteeth
I 2nd the piss break at "Jesus" as well. I think a piss break thread is warranted. I waited to see if it was sing along Jesus. Too long, as it happens, because it is becoming the piss break anthem. It is the concert equivalent of 1:11 left at halftime of a basketball game.

In Jeff's defense, I think he was having some pretty serious vocal issues right around the time of that Tipitina's show (3/5/08). At one of those gigs (a moment I think is captured on the Ashes DVD), he mentions having to go see the doctor and getting some sort of throat injection or something. Anyway, the next show on that run -- in Houston (3/7/08) -- was the worst condition I've ever seen Jeff in vocally. I was seriously worried that he might not be able to make it through the entire show. He did, of course, but it wasn't pretty. So maybe that has something to do with the vocal aspect of that Tip's show that you were commenting on? Or maybe not?

So maybe that has something to do with the vocal aspect of that Tip's show that you were commenting on? Or maybe not? That's right, I recall that now. Of course, in direct contrast to my earlier thought, what I enjoy so much about the version of "Ashes" that opens the DVD is that Jeff's vocals sound a bit frail and worn-out. I recognize that singers' voices get tired. Now that i think about it, the first time I saw Wilco was towards the end of their tour in 2006 and Jeff seemed pretty beat then too, and i thought the show wasn't as exciting as i had hoped. In ocotber 07 in KC it was the exact opposite...
Sir Stewart
It's the singalong that I grow tired of. The Jesus etc. singalong is my all-time least favorite Wilco thing.
choo-choo-charlie
Upon listening to the Tipitina's show from 2008 today, I realized that 1) I still enjoy the way they play "I'm the Man Who Loves You" and 2) I hate the way Pat sings "understaaaaaaaaaaaaand" towards the end of the song when they're all harmonizing. Sweet Papa Crimbo
The Jesus etc. singalong is my all-time least favorite Wilco thing. I am so done with the singalong. It mignt well be the centerpiece of YHF and Jeff can't do any better by it than a fucking singalong. HATE IT.
