Raleigh 9-27

Recommended Posts

I sat out the last two shows they were in town, one because I wasn't in town, and one because I am just not a fan of the venue (Koka Boothe - beautiful, but not a good set up, and the stage is too fuckin' low).

I am surprised to hear myself say this, but this was my favorite Wilco show ever. I don't have the setlist. Could probably piece together, but too tired.

Had a great time tonight. The new stuff was stellar, FINALLY got to hear Ashes of American Flags after 6 times of seeing one, if not the best live band right now. I'm shocked with how little/none Mermaid Avenue 1 and 2/A Ghost Is Born/Summerteeth material was in the set, kind of disappointing, but hearing Say You Miss Me from Being There, made up for it slightly. Jeff was so happy and smiling throughout the show, Nels was on fire tonight, and I saw Nick Lowe not only open, but perform 2 songs with Wilco. It came close to beating out the DPAC show back in 2010, but this is definitely the my show of the year. Nick Lowe's Set looked something like this (not at all in the right order).

- Heart

- Ragging Eyes

- What's Shaking On The Hill

- All Men Are Liars

- Lately I've Let Things Slide

- I Read A Lot

- Alison (Elvis Costello Cover)

- I Live On A Battlefield

- Cruel To Be Kind

- What's So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understating

Not a bad show, but I was pretty disappointed in a very chatty cathy crowd. It makes me feel better that as much as that kind of shit annoys me, we all know how well it goes over with Mr. Tweedy. One Wing was the only slight letdown for me, it just felt kinda flat. Other than that, the main set was tight and the encore was extremely energetic. I know the hardcore "I've seen Wilco 37 times" guys wouldn't mind, but I gotta say I was hoping for either Via Chicago or Misunderstood in the set and was a bit sad that neither were played. Oh well, so many wonderful new songs off the new record that is helping make that previous "effort" a distant memory. This was my first Co show in 6 years (!) and it felt amazing to come back home. Oh, would whomever started this thread be kind enough to put the correct date so we fine Wilco fans down south don't look like a bunch of stupid hill folk who can't read a calendar...just saying lol

What a great show. SOund was great from 8 row. Loved Nick Lowe as opener. Crowd up front was quiet and the band seemed in great mood. especially Jeff. Loved it when he said hard to sing lyrics to songs u dont know . Get use to it.... And he fire off a new song..... One Sunday is incredible live and so fortunate to hear them play entirely. Not many bands will put so much effort on asong from new album. (wish U2 would play some of their Acoustic Album songs vs just the big songs)

I love the album and shot out to Kung Fu Nation. I got my album package Friday so had long time to play and get to know songs.

Highlights Jesus but think it was earlier in set Art was a great opener. the ending of Hand Shake Drugs , Impossibel Germany . I requested Love My Label on web site and to get song played with Nick Lowe made my night. Walkin was good as well compared to when they played it in Chapel Hill.

Also fun moment during Nicks set john and pat sat right in front of us. I got thinking must be big fan as dude has haircut just like Pat but not seeing face untill they left i never put it together... Both of them look like 25 years old... Now i just wish i been able to shake hand and say how much i love the new album etc etc

Again I am always amazed at how well the band reproduce the sound of record live. I enjoyed this more then the Evening with WIlco tour and might have been as good as my first which was at Progress Energy right after Nels joined.

One Sunday is probably as close as we can get to a Tupelo sound IMO

Will be interesting to hear what folks have to say as it seemed most had not heard new songs Great night outdoors after 10 days of rain. Off to listen to The Whole Love over and over again...

Don't you mean time is "Sitting Still"?? :D

Touché! :P Perhaps I was subconsciously making reference to a line from You Are The Everything (All you hear is time stand still in travel), but, as much as I am quite OK w/ their entire catalog (everyone's allowed some weak ones), Sitting Still is so much better!

Done. Sorry about that. Big R.E.M. fan, and time is standing still for me at 9/21 as I continue to mourn. Today is 9/21, too. So is tomorrow.

Sorry for the loss. My wife and I were R.E.M. fans from the day Radio Free Europe hit the airwaves, and we've seen them many times. Although I lost some interest with their work in later years, thought Collapse Into Now is as good as anything they've done in years. I was looking forward to seeing them tour behind this. I feel your pain.

Not a bad show, but I was pretty disappointed in a very chatty cathy crowd.

I agree the crowd was bad, at least where I was, about halfway back. I could not believe people came to a Wilco show, even got reserved seats, not lawn, just to party, get drunk and act like idiots. All around me people were talking to their friends and not listening to the music. It was like a bar band crowd and Wilco deserves so much better. I am ashamed of Raleigh. I've seen Wilco live in other towns around NC and never experienced this. Have no idea what was up, why such a terrible crowd..

I loved the whole show. I do agree that the crowd was really talkative. The guy behind me was especially annoying and I'm sure on something. He was shouting after every single song. Just random, stupid things. He spilled his drink twice..but at least he was having a good time...

One highlight for me was, Jeff dedicating "I'm the Man Who Loves You" to the silhouette guy in the building. He asked the crowd to turn and wave. I'm not sure if the guy could hear him or not, but I thought it was funny.

I was there too. I had a great time at the show. I was lucky to get my hands on the album early enough to know all of the songs so I was able to sing along (quietly to myself so as not to disturb my neighbors!) even to the new songs - which was great. I'm one of those weirdos who has a better time when I know all of the songs played (or at least 95% of them!). I would have been a little disappointed with that much new material had I not known it, but only because I am a bit of a fanatic when it comes to our beloved Wilco.

I agree with the sentiment that the crowd was a little odd. I had a person next to me who was completely socially inept and was clueless about personal space and personal boundaries. There was plenty of room in our aisle yet she kept bumping into me and elbowing me, etc. Let me add that she kept elbowing my in the belly and I am 9 months pregnant. I would take a step or two closer to my neighbor on the other side and she would move a step or two closer to me. It was very bizarre. In addition to that, people in my aisle kept coming and going throughout the show as if they had no interest in seeing the performance at all, just wanted to get more beer. My section (center section 6 rows back) did seem to be fairly quiet during Wilco, thankfully - other than cheering. They weren't chatty during the show, which was nice. Although the entire crowd seemed to chat throughout Nick Lowe's opening set which I found very annoying because he was playing so quietly and everyone was talking really loud. It was difficult for me to hear his set.

What was up with that crowd?

Regardless, I didn't let the crowd (or the belly elbows) get me down and I had a fabulous time. I really enjoyed the entire show - even a big ass belly couldn't keep this booty from shaking.

Highlights for me (although I seriously loved it all):

-SAY YOU MISS ME (yes!!!!!)

-Whole Love

-I Got You

-I also LOVED the part when Tweedy said that it's hard to sing along to songs you don't know - get used to it and when he said "PLAT-INUM?!"

-I had a "multi-instrumentalist" sitting to my right - he played air guitar, air bass, air drums, was a super (loud) snapper, and a great hand-clapper. He was an enthusiastic listener and obviously a huge Wilco fan. It was fun to be seated (although neither of us sat of course) next to him - and to top it all off, he had a sense of personal space. Even with all of his bopping around, he never once crowded me or even bumped into me and his enthusiasm was infectious. That, my friends, is a great concert-goer and someone you want seated next to you at the next Wilco show. I don't know the guy, but he was certainly one of the more pleasant members of the audience.

One more thing - did anybody else have trouble with the staff? I was really harassed by one of the security guards/ticket checkers each time I tried to return to my seat after going to the restroom. (A side effect of being 9 months pregnant is having to pee every 10 minutes.) I left to use the facilities maybe 3 times throughout the night and each time he would grab my arm really hard to stop me as I was walking by, and ask for my ticket. The last time I wasn't thinking and didn't have it out in advance, so I had to search through my bag to find it. It took me maybe 30 seconds to find it but he was extremely rude to me, threatened to "eject me" from the venue and held me there until I located it and showed it to him. It seriously took me about 30 seconds to come up with the ticket - which I didn't think was too long. Ridiculous. Perhaps there were a lot of 5'2" women there who were 9 months pregnant who look like me and were sitting in the same section so he had to ask for my ticket each time... but even if he didn't remember me on trips 2 & 3, you would think he would give a girl more than 30 seconds to find her ticket before threatening to throw her out. Grabbing my arm seemed out of line also... Maybe I'm just pregnant & emotional, but I was pretty P.O.'d.

I loved the show and love the band, but really dislike that venue. Hopefully next time they'll return to the DPAC. Excellent venue & excellent staff!

I did notice that the crowd wasnt really into it. When Jeff first asked how folks were doing, there were a few cheers, but nothing overwhelming. I'm not sure why the band hasn't played Charlottesville in four years, but come back guys. There are your usual Chatty Cathys, but the majority of the crowd will give as much to you as you give to us.

the venue looked cool in pictures.

i lived in raleigh a few years back consulting for the state of nc. sorry for folks that live there but i couldnt get out of there fast enough. I absolutely hated living there and got into a funk like never before. people that live there seem to love it but it sure as hell wasnt for me.

I've been around here for over 9 years, and that is what the best concert reviews I have ever read on here.
