Walken and Box Full of Letters were on the printed set. It was a phenomenal venue. My only complaint was the ungodly wait in the will call line before the show. I was in line by 7:30 and I missed most of Nick Lowe!
RLaidEPeas
Amazing show. I took my dad, who I introduced to Wilco about a year ago - but this was his first time seeing them. He said he would put the first hour of their set in his 'top 5 best shows i've ever seen' category. We had 2nd row orchestra pit tickets, so that certainly doesn't hurt - but I agree that it was a phenomenal show. I went to all 3 nights of their run at the Pageant back in 2008, which obviously covered more ground as far as hearing more songs - but I really enjoyed the setlist tonight. I was glad they played Poor Places - that's my dad's favorite song - i was really shocked it was played so early in the set - but i thought it provided a great sonic shift right into Art of Almost. The encore was kick ass. I could have done without the Nick Lowe appearance and instead heard another Wilco song in the encore, but the guys looked like they were having such a great time with him on stage - and I thought Jeff sang "I love my label" perfectly. All in all a fantastic night of music in a beautiful new (old) venue.

bulletproof
How is it that I have seen Wilco six times now and never seen them perform Ashes of American Flags? This is so unfair. It was a great show. Via Chicago is worth the price of admission alone.
slingshot_scott
Very good show last night. Not transcendent like the Pageant shows a couple of years ago, but very good. Mostly because of the crowd and the vibe around us. We had great seats in the 9th row just left of center, and quite surprisingly the crowd around us was just not that into it. Well into the main set there were regularly 30-40 people sitting down and looking quite bored in rows closer than me, dead center in front of Jeff. Not sure why you go to the trouble of landing the best seats if that is your desired participation level. During poor places a guy two rows behind me basically punched me in the back of the shoulder and instructed me to "sit down moron. This is going to be a sit down show" It kind of put a pall on the early part of the set for me. There also seemed to be a lack of appreciation for the new songs, but personally I hope that Dawned on Me, Standing O and Born Alone are played for years to come. Loved hearing the new stuff. During the show the setlist seemed kind of choppy to me, but looking at it now it really was a nice set. The run from Impossible Germany (still amazed every time I see them pull that off on stage) to the end of the main set was excellent. As the previous poster said the encore was fantastic. I agree, I felt kind of jipped by two songs with Nick Lowe during the encore, but they were cool songs, especially the irony of I love my Label. The reopened Opera House is beautiful and will hopefully be a great place to see shows in the 'Lou for years to come.

tmj51578
How is it that I have seen Wilco six times now and never seen them perform Ashes of American Flags? I know what you mean! Last night was my sixth time, as well. While I have been lucky enough to have experienced Ashes, I have yet to experience California Stars in person. Actually, I didn't really get anything "new" last night. I was at the first Ryman show this past Saturday, and the main set was exactly the same with the exception of "New Madrid." Even still, it was an awesome show, and any chance to see Wilco live is time well spent!
Unlikely St Louis
slingshot_scott: I was sitting in row F on the left and saw that guy punch you. How obnoxious. This was my fourth Wilco show and at the previous three EVERYONE stood up the WHOLE time, so I was really surprised that people sat. Wilco is not a sit-down kind of show, IMO. Besides, they blew the gold leaf off the Peabody Opera House, so why would you want to sit? I thought it was amazing and much more elaborate then what they were able to do at the Pageant. Opening with One Sunday Morning was a bold choice and I was really surprised by it but it was great to hear it live.

bulletproof
I believe that Tweedy once said a few years ago in STL that they would play New Madrid every time they came to town.
Lord Byron
It's unbelievable what people do at concerts to try and get you to sit down. I've gotten, "You better sit down or else I'll stab you". Yeah, that got my attention, straight to the usher person and that person was escorted out. I'm going to Madison tonight and I'm worried about the stand up, sit down thing there because I believe it happened one other time I saw them at the Overture Center. This time I'm in the bottom circle area, front row. I'm guessing if I stand, I'm going to get jabbed in the back or something will be said. I'm all for standing and sitting at certain moments of shows. I prefer to stand for Wilco but it's all about the type of venue they are playing in. slingshot_scott: I was sitting in row F on the left and saw that guy punch you. How obnoxious. Paul Dallas
I was at the show last night and I thought Nick Lowe was outstanding . . . borderline stole the show, both with his opening set, and brought some much needed variety to Wilco's encore. 36 inches and Love My Label were really, really good. Wilco was pretty good -- not quite as entertaining as the last time I saw them at the Pagaent. They need to shorten up the long periods of distortion that it seems like they go through with almost every song. Audience seemed mostly bored during those frequent and prolonged periods. Nels can flat out play the guitar, okay, I get it, no argument there. The whole band is really talented, and plays well together -- no doubt about it. But at a certain point, its just noise on top of noise, there is no nuance, no subtlety, next song please! They have a lot to learn from Nick in that department. Maybe I'm closer to Nicks age than I am to Wilco's! If anything, I felt slightly ripped off with the overly long feed-back distortion moments. They could've trimmed that by a good 20-30 minutes and got in some more songs that we wanted to hear. Or gave Nick more time for his set! Also, the lights were at times annoyingly bright, but I liked the ghosts, and the visual impact for the most part. Highlights of Wilco's set for me was Jesus, New Madrid (was half expecting/hoping Jay Farrar would pop in for that one - like something out of Spinal Tap!), and the opener Sunday Morning was outstanding, and of course via Chicago. As you can tell, I am a huge Nick Lowe fan. But also love Wilco, if they could just learn to self-edit their extended jams and feedback habits ; ) !!!
choo-choo-charlie
Point taken I mean you no harm. Just a little friendly ribbing.

I would estimate it was about 5 minutes total, but those moments are quite enjoyable and give the set variety and nice transitions. Nick Lowe wasn't even close to stealing the show. His appearance in the encore was fine, but I would bet most people would have preferred a few more Wilco songs.

Gun7
What a great venue! What a great show!I've seen Wilco since before they were Wilco and I'd put that band they have together now up against any other rock band in the world right now.Nels can absolutely shred.Art of Almost and One Sunday are instant Wilco classics. choo-choo-charlie
I doubt 30 minutes could've been trimmed with the elimination or reduction of the noise-feedback codas to songs. Besides, they're integral to Wilco's sound. I'd never go to a Wilco concert and expect not to hear that stuff.
Paul Dallas
Feedback = filler = boring. And it was way more than 5 minutes. I would say it averaged a good 30 seconds to 1:30 minute per song . . . and over 20-25 songs, it adds up. From where I was standing - row W, when the lights shined out over the crowd during these moments -- almost everyone looked bored. No wonder the arguments of standing vs. sitting. I found myself wanting to sit many times, but had no choice. I'd grade the show last night a solid B, with Nick Lowe saving it from sliding to a C, but thats just like, my opinion, man ' )

His appearance in the encore was fine, but I would bet most people would have preferred a few more Wilco songs. I made it a point to get there early, because I heard Nick Lowe was to not be missed. But I have to say....I was underwhelmed. Perhaps he needed a backing band behind him, but he was pretty boring. I realize he's sort of a legend, and I was glad I made a point to see him, but I felt like his performance was pretty bare with just the acoustic. And I was in the 2nd row - right in front of him. I think it would have fit in at a coffee house or something, but it didn't really work as an opener to Wilco - just my opinion obviously - and surely not shared by many, because he seemed to have several diehard fans in the crowd shouting his name throughout the set. RLaidEPeas
Also just to add....most of the feedback and noise moments in the songs are also present on the album versions of those tracks. The end of Poor Places for example...and the beginning of I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. I think it was pretty cool to get that same element live. I understand it's probably not for everyone though - casual Wilco fans that only know a few songs probably don't dig it, or people who were there mainly to see Nick Lowe. choo-choo-charlie
Poor Places' coda and the beginning of IATTBYH are good examples of some good Wilco noise.
