jcroach
So, I'm thinking of getting tickets to see Son Volt. What can you expect from a Son Volt show? I hear Jay isn't very talkative and doesn't dig into the back catalog much. Tickets are only $15, so I wouldn't be out much.
remphish1
Worth seeing live...Jay plays a straight forward show. His band is always tight and he will play a ton of songs...Sure most will be from 2006 and up but he throws in a few good oldies and covers to make it worth your while. calvino
Definitely worthwhile to see.
borracho
totally worth it. last time i saw them was in 2009 and his band was great. and i can point to a son volt 2006 show at austin city limits festival where the hearing in my right ear got a little more damaged... standing in front of a speaker when jay started ripping on a solo and it felt like my ear exploded. got a little too close without having earplugs. ouch... lesson learned. Vacant Horizon
i could kick myself for how many times i've missed son volt since '96. i never got around to seeing them til 09 as well. did see jay solo and it was amazing. i think son volt may be a mellow show this tour as their new guitar player is older and definitely in the old school country vein. SarahC
I say go for it. I've seen Son Volt 4 or 5 times now, and each time it was worth the money. The 1st time I saw them on the Okemah tour was the best though. They were loud and rocking out the whole time, or at least as rocking as one can be staring at their shoes. Â Absolutely worth the door charge though. I wish they'd come back to Chattanooga.
Maggie
I saw them play an outdoor show a couple years ago and thought they were great. As long as you know what you're in for (lack of banter and theatrics) you'll be fine. The nice thing is, less talking can equal more playing. The show I saw was at a park that presents free concerts throughout the summer. I guarantee you the majority of the audience has never heard of Jay Farrar or Son Volt, but they seemed to go over very well anyway.

LouieB
They are certainly worth seeing if only out of curiosity about how Uncle Tupelo stayed together as long as it did. Having seen SV and Jay several times over the last couple decades I am kind of done with him, although I may see him again if the opportunity arises. I may have seen them for the last time at the Vic where I actually thought the show went on too long and the band only seemed to be excited when they played the old stuff. Jay is not Mr. Excitment and many of the songs sound alike. Â LouieB
The Inside of Outside
For 15 bucks, it is definitely worth it. Not sure I'd pay 35 or 40. Saw them twice, once on the tour for the first album and once on the tour for the second one. As others have said, no banter, much shoe gazing, mixture of mellow and rocking songs. If I remember correctly, when they rocked, it was very good.
Vacant Horizon
he can be tiring at times. he seems to enjoy playing the newer songs and slogs through the old ones. i think he's kind of a lazy live player and his singing has really gotten lazy. at the same time, some of his tunes, even on the last few records, have really moved me. the urgency of the Trace era is gone. he peaked early. jcroach
Thought some of you might be interested to know I ended up getting tickets to see The Old 97s instead. They just happen to be playing the same night. Been a long time since there's been 2 shows the same night I had to decide between!
