Wilco — 7/27/12, Newport, RI (Fort Adams State Park)

Recommended Posts

A solid show despite some early technical difficulty. Cool to hear Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion sing on a couple of Woody tunes, and of course Hoodoo is always a fun closer.

Very funny to hear Jeff's Ramones story as well, as well as the addendum about how to look like a punk in St. Louis...

Here was the complete setlist, as played:

Christ For President>

Art Of Almost

I Might

Poor Places>

Spiders (Kidsmoke) (acoustic arrangement)

Impossible Germany

Born Alone>

Laminated Cat (aka Not For The Season) (electric arrangement)

Open Mind

Handshake Drugs (started and restarted)

Can't Stand It

Whole Love

Box Full Of Letters

I'm Always In Love

Heavy Metal Drummer

I'm The Man Who Loves You

Dawned On Me

A Shot in the Arm

-----------------------------

California Stars (w/Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion on vocals and percussion)

Airline To Heaven (w/Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion on vocals and percussion)

The Late Greats

------------------------------

Walken

Hoodoo Voodoo (w/ bass/guitar/keyboard tech Josh on cowbell)

Very solid show. I loved the rework of some of the endings. Good to see they revisit and work out new stuff. Sansone even threw in a handful or two of grit and noise in his hoodoo voodoo duel with Nels. That was super fun.

WTF is with the beer tent being a quarter mile away and making you drink from there?

Agree with the beer situation. More than made up for it though in the parking lot before the concert. It kept my son kind of sober for a couple of hours if you want to make a positive out of a negative. Missed the first band but caught Blitzen Trapper's shortened set. Felt bad for them. The stage and their equipment were soaked and you could tell they were disappointed in having to cut their set short. Avoided getting soaked on the way in by ducking under an empty information tent. People were actually coming up to us for information. We told them it was raining and the fort was made of stone. A couple of folks got it. Great show none-the-less. Got two more firsts with Christ For President and Open Up Your Mind. The band looked pretty cool with the stone fort behind them. The folks out on the bay in their yachts sure got a nice treat as well. My son had gotten tickets to see Deer Tick at the Newport Blues Cafe afterwards. Great show. The locals sure love them some Deer Tick. Rocking loud with great audience participation especially with The Bump and Let's All Go The Bar. A night to remember for sure. Next stop, North Adams...

Honestly, I was kinda dissappointed by the show...it was good, but kinda...ehhh... The first 1/3 to 1/2 of the set the band didn't really seem all that into it. After Handshake Drugs they seemed to be having a better time and getting into it more. I just think that starting with a lot of slower more gentle songs kinda bogged it down.

NPR is streaming a great capture of last night's show. Here's a link:

Does anyone know if it is possible to download a streaming event like this? (I am not a techie, so apologies if this is not the smartest question!)

Was at the show and had a great time . . . surviving the rain at an outdoor event somehow always makes it more memorable. Caught up with some great friends, was 50 feet from the stage, and Fort Adams is a beautiful spot.

Thought the performance was top-notch with a great setlist, but I do think (and have increasingly thought for a while) that the finely crafted songbook puts a bit of a restrictor plate on the live experience. Not sure what the next evolution of my favorite band will be, but looser song structures with greater room for live improvisation would be welcomed here. The boys certainly have the chops!

I also like seeing all the beautiful guitars (really liked the colorful SG), but a new guitar for every song does seem a bit much (although I know different tunings are used throughout the night).
