ih8music
Tracking the progress of the health exchanges: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/10/04/us/opening-week-of-health-exchanges.html?ref=us&_r=0 Fwiw, I had no problems accessing the CA exchange earlier this week to price out plans (even though we already have coverage through our employer). The issues with the federal exchange are indeed embarrassing. Shame for the GOP that everyone is talking about the shutdown and debt ceiling or it would have been the lead story all week. Guest Jules
I also laugh at Jules assertion that it has been 2-3 weeks of ACA. Sorry, 1-2 weeks. What's the difference?

Hixter
Maybe the ACA site would work better if fewer people went on there to set up fake accounts they never intend to use. Just a thought. They aren't fake. But I'm beginning to suspect that the website is running on a single PC from 1993.

KevinG
I don't care if it was 2-3 days, it should work. Why? From what I gather you are against ACA. You should be dancing and cheering that the website doesn't work and 25 million people can't get insurance. That is what you want isn't it? I think every reasonable person knew that there would be issues with the website. Unfortunately the government underestimated the site traffic. BTW I went in today and was able to set up an account successfully. Also if you think website troubles show that ACA is a bad law, you may be couting your chickens before they hatch. Also, in a single post you cite 25 million uninsured and then say the administration didn't expect as much web traffic as it got. Huh? Finally, just because I don't like a law doesn't mean I want it to fail (can't speak for Jules). I wasn't too fond of the military action in Iraq but if we're appropriating funds and bombing people I really, really want the action to work insofar as funding and protecting and compensating our troops. I wasn't too fond of the military action in Iraq but if we're appropriating funds and bombing people I really, really want the action to work insofar as funding and protecting and compensating our troops. You are in the minority I think there. I think the right is overly gleeful at the struggles of the website and would like more then anything to have ACA fail. There will be growing pains, ACA is not perfect, nor has its implementation been perfect. But I find it amusing that all of these people complain that website doesn't work, when they want nothing more then ACA to go away. I just tried and failed yet again. I've tried password recovery and they say they'll e-mail instructions, but nothing has arrived. Obviously the website has the power to look into your heart and realizes you don't deserve a working website.
Guest Don Draper
The right is the minority, isn't it? I don't think we should necessarily paint with a broad brush. Congressmen perhaps have motivation to see the law fail, but to paint with a broad brush that the average lay person who didn't support the bill wants to see a bunch of uninsured people remain uninsured because the law doesn't work, I don't know that that sounds fair. calvino
Do we know that the law doesn't work, yet ---- the website at times, sure, but the actual law? I know a lot of anti-Obama Southern Illinoisans (both parents and young adults) already taking advantage of the under 26 year old people staying on the parent's policy. I think we need to wait to see if the rest of the law doesn't work.

And yes, I too know a bunch of people who are benefitting from the under 26 coverage and I think that's one of the best parts of the law. I've seen a lot of "I <3 Obamacare" bumper stickers around town, I've been seeing them for months, and to me they may as well read "I'm a Moron." That would be like saying "I <3 NASA" in 1958. Guest Don Draper
Is there more backlash than usual against Columbus Day this year? If there is, can anyone tell me there is an explanation that is more compelling than "The Oatmeal made a comic about it"?

KevinG
Is there more backlash than usual against Columbus Day this year? If there is, can anyone tell me there is an explanation that is more compelling than "The Oatmeal made a comic about it"? I think Columbus Day has experienced a general decline in the past couple of decades. It might have something to with how Columbus has come to symbolize the two darkest points of our history (the genocide of an indigenous group of people and the introduction of slavery). Not to say that those who believe it is right or anything, but that is how some people see Columbus. For me anyway it is such a non-holiday, nothing more than an annoyance with no mail and no banks. I don't remember a time when anything was actually celebrated on Columbus day. But backlash, I don't see it. I just think it is a non-holiday. I have no idea what Oatmeal comic you are talking about. A little reference would be nice.

KevinG
Here I prefer someone else to do my work for me. Columbus was a dick. Though Bartolome de las Casa effectively started the Transcontinental African Slave Trade. Pretty much everyone in history is a jerk.

ih8music
Among my circle of friends, the Oatmeal comic seems to be a big reason for the visible backlash this year. People may have already had these opinions, but nothing beats the ease of clicking on "share."
