Albert Tatlock
In the absence of any more detailed info:- http://m.exclaim.ca/Reviews/OttawaBluesfest/jeff_tweedy-blacksheep_stage_lebreton_flats_ottawa_on_july_4 Jul 05 2014 | By Daniel SylvesterEarlier this year, Jeff Tweedy recorded an album with his 18-year old son Spencer under the fitting moniker Tweedy. Assembling a small band including Eleventh Dream Day guitarist Jim Elkington, bassist Darin Gray and keyboardist Liam Cunningham of Marrow, the two Tweedys used night two of the 11-day festival as an opportunity to try out new songs from their upcoming LP, Sukierae. Pulling a massive crowd to the festival's smallest of its four outdoor stages, Jeff looked confident and loose playing with his stage mates, cycling through 40 minutes of new material that found the crowd genially bobbing and clapping along. But it was the back end of the set that ignited the Friday night crowd as the band left Jeff alone to perform 35 minutes of Wilco and Uncle Tupelo material. It came as no surprise that the crowd responded best to the trio of tracks from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, as a chorus of voices could be heard singing along to "I Am Trying to Beak Your Heart," "Jesus, Etc.," and "I'm the Man Who Loves You." But it was the stark versions of album cuts like "Passenger Side," "Hummingbird" and "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" that made Tweedy's solo outing the highlight of the evening. Returning to the stage for a three-song encore that included a rendition of "California Stars" that saw Jeff trying to change the words to "Can-a-dee-an Stars" Tweedy's band gelled together flawlessly, giving the crowd a multi-dimensional performance from this multifaceted musician. Kalle
I texted bbop the setlist right after but here it is: Diamond LightFloweringSummer NoonWorld AwayNew MoonHigh As HelloLow KeyIATTBYH (start of solo section)New MadridHummingbirdPassenger SideSpidersBorn AloneJesus Etc.IATMWLYShot In The ArmYou Are Not Alone (w/ band)Cana-dee-an Stars (w/band) No encore. Big difference from the Detroit show to this one, band sounded much more confident and comfortable, songs had more dynamics etc.Jeff was hilarious, sang a bit of Journey (who were headlining Bluesfest that day) had a few other really good quips too, can't really remember off the top of my head right now. All around awesome.
Magnetized
I know we're not supposed to post youtube videos but try searching for Tweedy Ottawa and there's a very nice video of Jeff singing Jesus Etc. It's remarkable how attentive the festival crowd is.
bböp
I texted bbop the setlist right after but here it is: Didn't want to steal your thunder, man! Haha. Thanks for the report (both personally and on here). Sounds like you had a pretty great weekend! :canada
smells like flowers
I know we're not supposed to post youtube videos...Can anyone remind me why video/cell phone picture taking is so anathema to Jeff/Wilco? I remember reading an interview at one point where the argument against it was basically aesthetic, as in people focused on their phones would not really be present to enjoy the hard work of the live show in front of them. Is that the basic jist of it? Is there also some proprietary angle with images, video, etc? And finally, is this typical of lots of bands out there? Looking forward to being enlightened. And, BTW, I deleted a recent post where I'd posted a YouTube video of "Give Back the Key to My Heart." I didn't realize it was actually against VC rules!
bobfrombob
Thanks to Kalle for taking notes. I couldn't have named most of the new songs anyway but I just enjoyed this show. It seemed to me Jeff was in a really super good mood. He looked so happy. "Blues isn't supposed to make you feel good, it's supposed to make others feel worse. If that's an acceptable definition, then my music is definetly blues" or something like that. The other observation is that I guess the "encore" was the band coming back for the last two numbers but Jeff never left the stage so it certainly wasn't perceived as an encore. I have never seen an Ottawa audience yell and shout for an unrequited encore that long and hard, and I have seen few audiences anywhere carry on like that. I suspect the stage manager told Jeff he couldn't go back because of the festival curfew, which was really disappointing in light of the fact that the Zedd was still blasting house music for at least another 10 minutes on another stage. We probably could have had another song or two if the Honey Island Swamp Band had left the stage when scheduled. It would have been easy enough to skip a festival performance, Very pleased I went.
