I don't think there's a Jefferson Airplane thread, so I post here

Jefferson Airplane’s Paul Kantner suffers heart attack.

Not surprising, I read somewhere that the 74 years old guy apparently smokes  5packs/day

You guys inspired me to listen to a '72 show tonight. Decided on 5/25. During Dark Star, that happy little jam that accompanied those '74 China Cats makes an appearance. Is there an official name for this melody?

Edit: love how that Dark Star is still sizzling into Sugar Magnolia when they decided to change tunes!

Listening to 01 December 1971 Boston...

At the 3:22 point of the second Other One (following Me & My Uncle)Weir performs the opening notes to Weather Report Suite...is this the earliest version of WRSuite?

Holy shit! I was just listening to 8/6/71 (10 weeks before Godchaux joined) and in the transition from Me & My Uncle back into The Other One THERE IT IS, even more pronounced than the 12/1 snippet.

I think you're talking about "Feelin' Groovy". A little descending riff.

Hot Tuna is playing Lockn' again.  Jack and Jorma are also separately doing a set honoring 50 Years of JA, with GE Smith, Larry Campbell, Teresa Williams, Rachel Price "and others."  I've been hoping the "others" would include Paul and Marty.  Probably more likely that they would have been named and "the others" are musicians from other bands already on the schedule.  Hoping for a full recovery for Kantner no matter what.

The "Feelin' Groovy" transition from China-> Rider '73-'74 is one of my favorite things GD-wise. More pronounced than the similar/same riff accompanying some earlier Dark Stars and heavier bass.

Listening to the above on Spotify --- decent comp (just came out to celebrate the 50th).

Nice to see some Brent tunes in the mix, too.

Probably won't buy it, though will seek it out from the library --- on Spotify it sounds great- I imagined the actual discs will even sound better.

Definitely one of my favorite things, too. Along with that riff that showed up occasionally (especially '70-'71) in some Dark Stars that  I guess we would call the "Tighten Up" jam. It bears a strong resemblance to the Archie Bell & the Drells' song "Tighten Up".

Love all those unnamed thematic jams that would pop up every once in a while.  Add Spanish Jam and Mind Left Body Jam to the list.  At the time I didn't appreciate how fortunate I was to catch a Spanish Jam at my first GD show.

I think one of the best known Feelin' Groovy jams is from the famous 2-13-70 Dark Star

No doubt. It's sweet, too.

Listened to 6/30/85 a few times over the weekend, great show! I had no idea the GD did "Keep On Growing".

They only did it 4 times, I believe. All are very solid, too. I really like the bust-out one from the Greek best. Wonder why it was dropped from the roster. That Merriweather show is awesome, too, with that great Shakedown.

I think the part I enjoy most about that song is Phil and Brent trading verses and harmonizing on the choruses, if you can believe that! For some reason those two seem to work pretty well together vocally, and Phil singing is not normally something that's pleasant to listen to LOL.

I've often wondered if it wasn't Phil's idea to bust that one out. This was at the time him and Jill were still in a "new love" phase (around 3 years), and there are lines ("you walked right into my life", etc.) that seem to be him singing to her.

I cannot believe you said this. I say it all the time, but I can't believe you said it. :lol

I love him in the studio (Box of Rain, Unbroken Chain...Pride of Cucamonga, not so much), but live...ugh. I think he just struggled with playing and singing at the same time, which I can totally understand. I blame his background vocals for ruining more otherwise-great versions of early 70s tunes than even Donna.

I always liked Phil's vocal take on "Broken Arrow"  as his voice never really bothered/-s me. Vocal parts with Brent, as mb mentioned, were cool: "Gimme Some Lovin'," "Tons of Steel," "Tom Thumb's..."etc.

It's interesting how Phil sung all the high harmonies before Donna came along.  I too enjoyed his songs he did with the Dead.  Always a great first set when Phil sang.  I do not like him singing so much with 'the friends' though.  I guess it's a necessity, but it's too much.  That's why I hope to god that they let Bruce sing the Jerry tunes at Fare Thee Well.  Maybe let Trey sing a few, but Bruce really does justice to 'em and I love his interpretation.

Yeah, Phil was great in the studio, but ruined many an otherwise excellent live tune with off-key/out-of-tune/flat/pitchy etc. harmonies. I find some of them to be almost excruciating. It's weird how solid Jerry, Bobby and even Pigpen generally are in the vocal dept...but not Phil or Donna. Could they not hear themselves, or is it just a question of vocal ability in a live setting? I wonder. That 70s equipment was pretty primitive.

These days, no question, Phil should not be trying to sing at all. Hope you are right and that Bruce H. takes those over.

Speaking of Pigpen, I started listening to The Ark 4/21/69 for the first time last night. Opens with a really weird Hard to Handle. Jerry plays slide guitar throughout it! Anyone else heard this? It's otherwise pretty unremarkable, not a great version by 1969 standards, but what a strange opener.

I happen to listened to 4/5/69, while prepping the Easter feast, this past Sunday --- Jerry plays slide on a Hard to Handle in that show, too --- wasn't very good - though unique to hear. Guess he was just trying out his slide chops during April of 1969. (overall 4/5/59 is a great show, though)

The third night of the Ark shows is a whopper. The St.Stephen-> It's a Sin-> Stephen is excellent, as is the Dark Star that precedes it. The Eleven from 4/22/69 is one of my favorites, too.

That 3 night run should be a box set imho. SO much good stuff! The Viola Lee encore on 4/21 is as ragged as it gets, I wouldn't even say it's good, but MAN it sounds like everyone took an adult dose that night!

For my money the Dark Star from 4/22 is my favorite from all of Spring '69, and as LC said The Eleven is spot on. The last night! It's such an embarrassment of riches it's just ridiculous. Go look at the setlist. It is INSANE.
