The Inside of Outside
Whiskeytown opening for The Old 97s. The Old 97s --> good; Whiskeytown --> phenomenal.
TCP
In 2003, when I was 16, I saw the My Morning Jacket open for the Foo Fighters, a few months before It Still Moves came out. I will never forget hearing the guitars of One Big Holiday for the first time.
ThisIsNowhere
San Fermin for the Head and the Heart. They didn't quite top them, but definitely gave them a run for their money and I don't think anyone really knew who they were then.
PopTodd
I suppose, looming much larger in my memory from the fIREHOSE show that I attended the evening of Halloween, 1989 was the opening act -- Uncle Tupelo. While fIREHOSE was great, UT's set was a performance that changed my life. CCRGMac
Boris supported Nine Inch Nails here a few years ago and (in my opinion) totally blew NIN away.
jff
While not technically an opening act, Patti Smith performed before Bob Dylan at a festival I went to in the '90s and made him look like a boring old geezer.
ih8music
Langhorn Slim opening for Lucero at the Belly Up in SD last year. Not that Lucero had a bad night or anything, but that dude blew me away with his singing and energetic performance! The band is perfect for his style, too -- highly recommended if they're ever in your area.
Doctor B
Not really blow away but more than held their own---- Lynyrd Skynyrd opening for the Who in Atlanta, 1973 (74?)....
