Jeff Tweedy Evanston IL Canal Shores Golf Course

Recommended Posts

It would be difficult to imagine a more perfect summer evening in Evanston. Low humidity and a Lake Michigan breeze. I don't have a set list, but I will say that the band and support were fantastic. OHMME's harmonics at the soundboard were perfect. Something that I noticed tonight that's different from when I first saw TWEEDY at the Pabst Theater is that it was a full band backing Jeff. In lieu of Jeff playing solo acoustic Wilco for the first half of the show.  Tonight's set list was fantastic on it's own merit. All original songs for two hours. James Elkington's guitar was once again brilliant.

Great night, I really enjoyed Ohmme. I kind of wish that Jeff would make Tweedy a going concern, kind of like Trey Anastasio Band or Jerry Garcia Band, his solo songs sound much better with a full band. What was the Doug Sahm song they did?

The Split Single after show was incredible. Much more than I expected. The second floor VFW hall at Canal Shores Golf Course might need to check the structural integrity and/or at least the plaster after this show. An absolutely fantastic show. Evanston is essentially Jason Narducy's hometown. Jason commented that this was the first time an opening band sold 3800 more tickets than they did. Haha!  Regarding playing a VFW venue on a Saturday night, Jason quipped that they picked out the loudest songs to enjoy beers together on a Saturday night.  Ohh, and also, Micheal Shannon  jumped up on stage to sing the second and third songs of the four song encore!  Brilliant!

A quick stop at banter corner. With Sammy coming onstage to accompany I Know What It's Like, Jeff stated something similar to," this is a spitting image of me as a teenager." Jeff looked at Sammy, smiled and said something to the affect, "Sorry kid, this it where it winds up". Sammy took it in stride to his credit. Spencer and the band were fantastic.  :ike

Another banter moment was Jeff recollecting his wedding . He and Sue were married at Lounge Axe. " To describe the man my father was, he went to my wedding knowing that it was in a bar and brought his own cooler of beer".

We're in new territory setlist-wise for a show billed as 'Jeff Tweedy' - one Wilco song played at the end. Pretty interesting. I wonder if most concert goers were expecting the Wilco catalog to be ignored.

Everyone I know who went to this show was ecstatic about every aspect, including the setlist. It’s a rarity to get to hear the Jeff Tweedy and Tweedy band songs played with a full band. It seems hard to imagine that anyone could have been disappointed!

A couple of Jason Narducy side bar after show banter corner moments. Jason had an appx 6 inch scratch on his arm due to a recent bicycle wipe-out. He commented that he replied to a concerned motorist that he did this to get his wife's attention. He said that the concerned motorist said, ' yeah, I do that all the time'. Jason wen't on to say that my elbows are perfectly fine.  ;)

Jason went on to tell a story about growing up in Evanston. As a teenager, he was with a pal doing donuts in a car on a frozen Lake Michigan inlet. In a few minutes the flashing lights were on them. He said that in 'dick move' the cop took the keys from them and said see you at the police station.  His friend resided only a few blocks away and they simply retrieved the extra set of keys and went home.  :banana

Late to this thread, but man, that show was excellent! Since it was more than likely a one-off, we might not get a show like this again for a good while. Actually, outside of Solid Sound, I don't think the there has ever been a full show like this. If you were a casual Wilco fan (if there is such a thing) and didn't know what you were getting into, all the unfamiliar material might've been off putting. And there were a few shout outs near me of "Poor Places," or "Handshake Drugs" or "Play some Wilco." But I'm glad Jeff went solo stuff all the way. I loved the mix of Sukierae, Warm and Warmer material. The songs sounded fantastic and, if you'll excuse the pun, warmer with the band. The group didn't seem rusty or unrehearsed at all.

Speaking of the band, Jim Elkington is good. Really good. Obviously no one can quite do the virtuoso things Nels Cline does, but I think Elkington could give Nels a pretty good run for his money. Also, maybe I missed something, but is Darin Gray out of the Tweedy lineup now? Liam Cunningham was on bass.

Here's the setlist:

Bombs Above
Some Birds
New Moon
Don't Forget
Having Been Is No Way to Be

Orphan
Summer Noon
Ten Sentences
Guaranteed

Empty Head
Flowering
I Know What It's Like
…and Then You Cut It in Half
World Away
Evergreen
Family Ghost
Love Like a Wire (Diane Izzo)
Low Key
You Are Not Alone
It Must Be Love (Labi Siffre)
The Losing End (Neil Young)
Let's Go Rain
I Wanna Be Your Mama Again (Doug Sahm)
California Stars

Just a late pop-in to say the show was just beautiful in every way. Canal Shores is so close I could (and did) walk over with my lawn chair. I had gone also the night before at the same venue to see I'm With Her and Mandolin Orange, who were also just lovely, if much more mellow. Space is just an incredible boon to the neighborhood here in Evanston, and these Out of Space shows are getting better every year. They did a top-notch job configuring a golf course and American Legion post next to an El station into a magical concert venue, with kind of a Stars Hollow town square vibe. (yes, I just did a Gilmore Girls reference.)

To my ears, the setlist wasn't missing anything and they had plenty of great, varied material between Warm, Warmer, and Sukierae, with some fun covers thrown in. The band sounded tight and looked to be having fun, Jeff in particular. I agree with whoever commented that Jim E. added a lot of interesting flourishes to the new songs that really enhanced their sound.

Glad I got to see a bunch of you there and enjoy a show I will always remember, right in my hood. Thanks for coming up to E-town!

Yes, I’ve been wondering about Darin too. I really liked his contributions and he was a super sweet guy. I’m sorry to see that he hasn’t been in this latest lineup. Also, I believe this is the first ever Solid Sound he has missed.
