Well, as I've sometimes said, you really need a third night in a given city to get a full picture of the band at this point. Hot damn! I would have to say one of the top few (Wilco) shows of the year, IMHO.

 

More comments later, but for now, here was the complete setlist as played:

It was an incredible three night run capped off by another great show. 18 different songs played tonight from the first 2 shows. That's rewarding the people that went to all 3 shows. I have seen Wilco since their first tour, and it had been awhile since I had seen them play some of these songs. I'm just floored by the last three nights.

What an unbelievably great run in NYC. Jimbo, I only started seeing them in 2007, but these three nights were just incredible. I'm not sure the entire crowd at Terminal 5 got it, but for those of us who did, wow.

Well, this was my FIRST Wilco show -- and it was quite a show. Man, they came out of the gate smoking and basically didn't let up all night.

 

Impressions

 

1. Whole Love material was just outstanding live -- makes me think it's the best disc out in the last year

2. So hard to pin down who Wilco live reminds me of (I've seen hundreds of shows) -- sometimes they sound like the Stones, Petty, the Who and Dylan all mixed up -- but they really are unique. The guitar progressions and mixtures are just so gorgeous and powerful.

3. Whole band is great -- Nels is simply outstanding

 

Cannot wait to see them again!

Would be remiss if I didn't mention that it was awesome to see Cibo Matto's opening set as well, with cameos from all members of Wilco. So fun! I hesitate to make a Deerhoof comparison because obviously the main similarity is both bands having a Japanese frontwoman, though their music is quite different. But I feel like there is also something comparable in that both have a sense of playfulness about them. They're serious musicians, but they don't take themselves too seriously, if that makes any sense. And like with Deerhoof when they opened for Wilco many moons ago, I'm sure there will be some haters when it comes to Cibo Matto's performance. It's not for everyone, but I'm a fan.

 

Anyway, there's obviously a strong Nels-Cibo Matto connection since he is married to one-half of the band. All of the Wilcos, though, seemed to really enjoy coming out and collaborating with Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda (and their rhythm section which, on this night, consisted of current Nels Cline Singers bassist Trevor Dunn as well as percussionist Shayna Dunkelman). I mean, how many times do you see Jeff come out and play with the opening band...even if he was just improvising "G" words?

Was supposed to go last night but couldn't, went Tuesday instead...Ironically songs I requested for Tuesday (Say You Miss Me) night and Wed (Too Far Apart) night got played! Next time Wilco! Still one hell of a run!

 

PS On a side note only two from Yankee!..that's got to be a record low for a live show!

I love when they end the night with The Lonely 1

That's always been one of my favorite songs and at the end of the set it leaves you in a peaceful, contemplative state of mind.

Kind of like what shavasana does after an intense yoga class.

I knew i would regret missing any of these shows. Went to the first two nights in prospect park, figured i didn't need a third straight night of wilco. Boy how wrong was i? Always wanted to see The Lonely 1, will have to hold out for Cooperstown.

 

On another note, what a spectacular Three night run this was! Shame it has to end, would have loved to see what they'd do to the setlist with a 4th show. Maybe we'll have an incredible shrinking tour of NYC at some point?

"Fuck, Yeah!!!" That is what I overheard someone say on the way out of the show last night. I have to agree wholeheartedly. I passed on the first two nights in NYC hoping to get a set list like this. Didn't expect hearing full band versions of TEN Wilco songs I had never heard before after attending 16 previous concerts. Lucky 17. I always seemed to miss Too Far Apart and Casino Queen. Not tonight. I got them both on my birthday no less. Kamera, Candy Floss and Capitol City were great to hear as well topped off by Dreamer, Lonely One, Hesitating Beauty and WTWGIS. I had seen a short sound check version of Kicking Television once, so hearing the full song was cool. Hope to get a similar type show at MassMoca next week. On to Newport...

During their Chicago run last December, they played only one YHF song (Radio Cure) on night #3 at the Vic. But yes, two songs from YHF is extremely low and rare. Probably only going to happen during a multiple night run in the same city.

NYC Taper was recording, and he usually posts shows within a few days and does an excellent job.

Great show! Only critique is the less than stellar sound in that joint. Couldn't really pick up Sansone and the vocals were a bit distorted at times.

But a near perfect setlist made up for any shortcomings in the T5 PA.

Last night left me feeling like I had been at a mini NYC residency. Not since the Chicago residency have I experienced, IMHO, such an outstanding series of shows culminating with that gift for us die-hards @ T5! Every-other song elicited an audible "OMG" from my lips!! THANK YOU WILCO - you never let me down )))

That sums it up pretty well! I couldn't be more blown away! That trio of NYC shows is something that I hope will be a precedent. Like the five they did last December in Chicago. I hope these are half as much fun for them as they are for the die-hard faithful, & I hope it continues...words fail, so I'll let the list of songs they performed do the talking...I count 63 different songs (with some performed more than once, but not that many)...let me know if I missed any, miscounted or otherwise messed up, & I'll jump in & edit & correct it... but otherwise, here, appears to be that list...

The sound was fine 4 rows back under the stack... Heard Pat no problem...

Sound was pretty darn good, IMHO. However, it was atrocious in NJ last Saturday. The whole experience was sub-Wilco-par, and I do not blame them one bit. Their time limit was 90 minutes, the sound sucked terribly and it was a seated event, which always leaves me wanting. Jeff didn't banter at all in order to leave as much room for songs as possible. They did pull out a few fan-favs that I'm not sure the SBC crowd fully appreciated. I walked out knowing I'd never go back to that venue again.

I missed the incredible shrinking Chicago shows, but was lucky enough to camp out in the negative degree weather at the 2008 residency...life-altering, made great friends, the best of times! Show-runs like this should be the rule for them - the Allman Brothers do/did it every year in NYC.
