  1. I saw him on that tour -- in Chicago. I would like to see him do a full-band electric show sometime, leaning heavily on his first few albums.
  2. That's a pretty common restriction on search engines. I don't much like it. On a slightly related subject, yesterday I signed up for something online and they wouldn't accept a first name that was less than three letters (I tried to give only my initial). I know at least three people whose full first names are two letters. What the hell are they supposed to do?
  3. Amitabul. It's not really close to anything (except Superdawg). The webpage says they offer cooking classes, but I'm pretty sure I heard the owner tell someone that they're not doing that anymore. It's not for everyone, but if you're not deterred by the mere concept of vegan Korean food, you might love this place. I just wish they were still down on Southport, where they were much easier to get to. I'm guessing the rent got to be a bit much for them.
  4. On Friday night I added at least 15 of you to the list of VCers I've met! It was a pretty terrific time -- I just wish we could have stayed later. We get up at 5 AM most days (4 AM Chicago time), plus we'd been on the road for much of the day, so by the time we left we were barely able to keep our eyes open. Consequently, we missed the guitar freakout in the basement during which most of the pictures were taken. Thanks again to Morgan & family for hosting, and to all of you for being there and making a couple of horrible introverts feel comfortable.
  5. The only people who need to do all that ^ are those who watch over-the-air broadcast TV. If you have cable or satellite service, the converter box isn't necessary. ...or so I've been told, repeatedly, by an endless number of PSAs.
  6. I'm encouraged that the White Sox have been able to put up thirteen runs with only one home run -- a solo shot leading off the game. I hope this year's team can keep generating runs without relying on the long ball.
  7. Getting the golf league started up again. Opening the windows to let fresh air into the house. Going to San Francisco in June.
  8. Sad to have missed it this year, but it sounds like it was at least as great as last year's! I look forward to hearing audio...
  9. We thought we'd said goodbye to everyone on our way out, but it occurred to me after we left that we hadn't found you, and possibly a couple of other folks. I'm sure we'll catch up at another event. Thanks for the posters! They're going to the framer this week. I know there is photographic evidence -- somewhere -- that Melissa and I were at the party, but you'll have to get that from Leo (and I know someone else caught me off guard before I could dodge the dreaded lens). It was great to see everyone! I hope to see all of you again soon! Now I'm off to read about last night's show...
  10. They likely run a second live mix that includes mics pointed at the audience ... so it's basically a "live matrix." One mix for the house sound, one for the webcast.
  11. We'll be getting on the road pretty early in the morning.
  12. I thought for a second about bringing my drum set from Michigan, but that would be kind of dumb. Besides, I haven't played in over a year, so it would be kind of pointless, too.
  13. Mugabe will not go quietly. Crap. - - - - - - - - - - - Zimbabwe opposition offices raided By ANGUS SHAW, Associated Press Writer President Robert Mugabe's government raided the offices of the main opposition movement and rounded up foreign journalists Thursday in an ominous indication that he may use intimidation and violence to keep his grip on power. Police raided a hotel used by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change and ransacked some of the rooms. Riot police also surrounded another hotel housing foreign journalists, and took away several of them, according to a man who
  14. "Dash 7" got dusted off for the first time in ages. Probably not the least-played song overall, but it was certainly one of the longest in mothballs. edit: OK, so I went and looked. It got played four times over 2005-2006. Huh.
  15. It's certainly fodder for much argument. I'd rather limit the possibility of non-boundary replay usage to two calls per game by giving the managers one challenge apiece. If you have a crew chief who's replay-happy, giving him that much discretion will surely slow the game down more than two (or fewer) challenges per game by the managers. Challenges for safe/out calls make sense to me because there are plenty of badly missed calls in that category, many of which might turn games if they went the other way. And those aren't really judgement calls, the way balls/strikes or basepath infractions
  16. That doesn't mean it sounds good when reproduced on your stereo. Live sound is a very different beast from studio-mixed sound. Sometimes in a live setting you have to jack something up higher (or down lower) to even out the sound in the room. It may sound good to someone standing there, but on tape it can be pretty awful. I've heard a lot of soundboard patches where the vocals were unbearably high in the mix, or there was very little bass, or any number of other issues. These weren't necessarily mistakes by the sound guy -- he was mixing for the live audience, not the home listener. Some o
  17. I am in favor of very limited use of replay in baseball. In my view, home run calls should be reviewable at the discretion of the umpiring crew. If no one on the crew is dead certain of the call, review that sucker. I think foul/fair calls are another candidate for this treatment. I'd like to see a challenge allotted to each manager, but probably only one per game, so most of the time they'd be saved until later innings and possibly not used at all. Those challenges could be used for out/safe calls at any base or home plate. I'd hope that there'd be a way to prevent managers from issuing c
  18. I don't understand all this reverence for straight soundboard recordings. That mix is for house sound, not later playback, and it's frequently quite sterile and poorly balanced for headphone listening. As yltfan alluded to, the addition of an audience source often brings out parts of the overall mix that don't come through very well on the soundboard patch. I suppose if you really want to listen to weirdly mixed soundboard-only recordings, that's your right, but I'll take a matrix EVERY time.
  19. Wow, this whole college student thing has really gotten to you. Don't worry, it'll pass, and you'll end up comfortably bitter and jaded like the rest of us.
  20. Man, I'd forgotten that about More Like The Moon. ...and personally, I'm not too worried about the All Over The Place link, given its extreme rarity -- but them's the rules, at least as I understand them. Or maybe I'm wrong -- the specific prohibition is against links to "full commercial studio record(s)"(?).
