  1. I assure you, I am mixing on tiny, shitty speakers... There's definately an art to making a mix sound good on a good pair of speakers and good on a bad pair of speakers also. Whatever that art is, I have not yet harnessed its power. edit: I have an EXCELLENT pair of studio monitor headphones, but once again, it sounds good in those and like shit on the stereo....
  2. "You said you'd never compromise With the mystery tramp but now you realize He's not selling any alibis As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes..." that section of verse always makes me get goose bumps. If I came up with "the vaccuum of his eyes," I would just stare at it on the paper I wrote in on, for like, a whole day. "In the darkness of my night In the brightness of my day" -- I really like those too.
  3. The forum at afterdawn.com has a lot of info on this type of stuff. Just fyi.
  4. Listened to both American Beauty and Workingman's Dead this weekend. Really liked them both! Thanks for the good advice everyone.
  5. I went wild with this thing doing some recordings this weekend. I made some great "noise" by sliding it back and forth over my bass pickups. Not sure if it is because they are active or what, but it made some wild shit. With a little (well, a lot) delay added it made all sorts of crazy things go on. Definately. P.S. I don't know a lot about electronics, but my inclination is to believe that the ebow might be bad to be near my computer when turned on. Any thoughts?
  6. I took a couple suggestions and just got Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. Got some good beer too....gonna make a fine weekend. Thanks for all the input.
  7. I remember racing home from this movie and trying to beat Mario Bros, an act I was convinced would lead to long, lustful relationships with a girl like Mr Savage courted in the movie. I did not beat the game (ever) or land said girl (mmm...yet). I do remember the quote, "Just keep your Power Gloves off of her." Apparently the "bad kid" had the new Nintendo product, the power glove.
  8. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. That album steered me in a musical direction I never could have foreseen, and brought me here.
  9. The majority of previous dislike/inability to appreciate GD came from a person whom I did not care for that constantly blabbered about them. Not the best reason to not listen to a band, but my reason. It seems like many others around here really like GD, and I hold fellow VCers as people who have decent musical taste and also cite GD as influences on Wilco and other bands I listen to. Thus, I thought I would give them a try. That's all. In looking at their available recordings on itunes I was overwhelmed. Sometimes I might not (directly) like a band's music, but like how it was produced, tones
  10. Thanks for the info! I think it's the jam band stuff that has really turned me off in the past. Believe me, I've tried to get into jam bands and just cannot. I think I might get to the music store this weekend and pick up American Beauty and Europe '72. If it's of any assistance I like the song, Ripple.
  11. For a number of reasons, I have never been able to get into the Dead. However, I think it may be time to try again. Where should I start?
  12. Is this their only performance from Burn to Shine? I don't know too much about the whole thing other than i thought they burned the house down afterwards.
  13. agreed. I don't think he ever overcame Pinkerton being ripped when it was released.
  14. Yeah. That song is beautiful.
  15. I agree. I don't feel like too many ( ) of my comments and questions are stupid, and even when they are someone politely and courteously addresses me. Andy
  16. Congratulations, that's pretty cool. That means you're doing something right. Good luck in the future.
  17. I can appreciate a poet's license. I didn't mean to come across negatively, it was just often a difficult passage for me to follow due to the use, or lack of use, of punctuation. Kind of one tangent on top of another. I got his point though. I wonder how many other "involved" people have had similiar issues/feelings to his.
  18. I write a lot of songs/music/etc. Typically just pen, paper and guitar which then gets elaborated on when I set foot on recording. I think it's definately noteworthy to mention I have found great differences in songs that were written at various stages of emotional being - losing a girlfriend, being drunk/high, sleepy, awake, location, even proximity to other people. I don't think it's something that I can put a finger on in my work. By that I mean I don't have a set way that I've found in producing "better" material. Some songs are happy, some dark, some serious, some are "throw aways." It's
  19. Maybe they would just both blow the hell out of each other. Pehaps that would cause an end to all of the stupid shit that has gone on between the two. I mean really, what is going to be decided at the end of this. History has shown that the Middle East doesn't tend to learn from the past. It sounds horrible, because it would be, but I'm beginning to wonder if something like a nuclear strike would make the Arabs/Muslims/Jews/Sunni/Shiite/other groups wake the fuck up and realize that killing each other is not going to solve anything. The same problem just perpetuates and my answer is evolving t
  20. One of my best friends adores them and was babbling about Frances the Mute for quite some time. That might be a good place to start. To my (limited) knowledge, this is their most recent album.
  21. Funny you should mention this, after posting in this thread earlier I was thinking back to the show and seemed to remember his drummer being really awesome also.
