Nothing like their previous album, and whilst that's quite sad, it is everything like you'd expect the next Grizzly Bear album to be. I like.

Isn't that what Secret Machines have always been about? Anyway, I was expecting the album to be a total disaster, and it's not. Granted lyrically it's full of manky and hollow syntax, but I find it sonically and texturally more interesting, even more menacing in places, than their old stuff. Ben's new band, School of Seven Bells, have an album out soon I believe. Be interesting to hear how that pans out, have only heard one track by them but they sounded altogether different but decent nonetheless.

Given their personnel departures/changes, I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it is. And it is good.

Holy shit! I remember seeing that poster outside a cinema when I was about seven and it scared the poo right outta me. Never could recall what it was called..... A belated happy birthday Eric.

It always happens. I thought for once, just once, that Italy's boring unadventurous football would get found out and they would be bounced out of the tournament in the group stages. Now I can see them grinding out resounding 1-0 victories all the way to the final and winning it. I hope not, but I was convinced it would happen the moment Buffon saved Mutu's penalty: just when it looks like Italy face humiliation something happens to turn it round just before the death knell sounds. It's like the mythological Gods are always smiling on them, but prefer them to suffer a bit of pain at the outset.

Had two listens to Viva La Vida today - subject change - and it's reasonable. The weakest link on the whole album is Chris Martin though, both lyrically and in his vocal performance. Some of the lyrics are downright shocking, 'Lost' and '42' being the worst offenders that I can think of off the top of my head. Vocally, his voice is just too anemic when compared to the music - it needs to spirited, menacing, passionate but it's the equivalent of warm milk: just mildly comforting.

True the true. Prior to him lauding Arcade Fire he was one of the Flaming Lips most vocal fans. But their onstage influence on Coldplay never really rubbed off. Oh hang on. Strobe? Check. Megaphone? Check? and and have a look at the Fix You video at around the 2:45 mark and compare to the regular Coyne trick of: Oh, and I think Chris Martin is the worst dancer ever and should be have his feet sown together for crimes against rhythm.

I was surprised just by how many people actually appreciate it over and above the universally acknowledged Pet Sounds. Case in point, I had a 60 year old chap help mend my downstairs plumbing (not a euphemism) the other day and it was playing in the background. He knew all the words to Steamboat, so we got chatting. Ended up putting on Carl and the Passions at his request, and him borrowing Faust IV. Good pick with the Zombies, Odyssey narrowly missed my Top 20 shouts.

When picking these lists I usually think of the desert island scenario, ie if I could only have 20 albums to listen to for the rest of my life, which albums would they be. The albums don't really change around that much, the order usually does.

I've been bold and submitted my 20. I'm just hoping there aren't any up-coming albums between now and the end of July that change the face of musical greatness. I think I'm safe though. It was the most accurate cinematic depiction of the 80s that I remember growing up in. It also excelled in its realism, particularly the dialogue, which I'd assume was partially improvised given the off-the-cuff and very natural interplay between the characters. It reminded me of Kes in some respects, in that both concentrated on young boys who found some kind of freedom and sense of belonging, albeit in completely different ways. The young boy, Thomas Turgoose, turned in an astonishing performance too.

Manchego is the business! It's a hard cheese but almost kind of fudgy in a way but that's more to do with its richness. By far the best cheese, and I like my cheese.

I think the whole relationship between Ben and Locke is very interesting. I get the impression that Ben is something of a charlatan, a very clever and persuasive charlatan. We don't actually know for sure whether Ben has actually seen Jacob. I get the feeling that Ben plays up to Jacob's myth, but was genuinely shocked and surprised that when Locke was first presented to Jacob, that Locke did actually see him. I get the impression that Ben may have led Richard and the rest of the indestructibles a bit of a merry dance by claiming he's in contact with Jacob, and it's not like he's never lied

I'm bang into this. We suffer because our garden is a lawn and a patio (both very small) so we don't have the luxury of too much spare soil for planting anything, even flowers. We've got round this by buying some vegetable and potato growing containers they're circular sacks that you fill two foot with compost with plant your seeds and bulbs in there.
