Chavez loses bid to become president-for-life
MattZ replied to cryptique's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I don't know about anyone else, but I am going to concede here that it's probably not right to abort something 24 months old. I think everyone else should agree too. Yeah, really. A toddler, even. (I keed, I keed) -
Fair point Niall. But Elvis could have written that line if he felt like it. He just didnt feel like it.

Don't put your heart out on your sleeve When your remarks are off the cuff

Rumors (in NYC at least) are that the Tigers are trying to dump Pudge's salary. And they see Willils as the perfect way to do it.
-
I heard the opposite. That the Tigers contacted the Mets since the Mets had expressed interest in Willis to Florida. And the Tigers want the Mets to take Pudge. Luckily for us Mets fans this will meet our goal of acquiring every single f*cking catcher in all of baseball.

The social circle have these cardiac complaints Their hearts are empty when their hands are full All these new found fond acquaintances Turn out to be the red rag to my bull (jeez this thread should be pinned)

This is awesome. I never heard of this. Can you explain what it is? Who is Brian?
-
Ahhhh, boywithorn. You say so many things that I agree with. It is a shame that we must remain mortal enemies over your poor taste in NY baseball teams.

There are gems in virtually every song. Every single one. And in other news, the NY Post reports that the Mets have signed righty Nate Field to a minor-league deal.

Chavez loses bid to become president-for-life
MattZ replied to cryptique's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Absolutely. No argument from me. People have conflicting ideals on both sides of the fence. But at the same time -- the hands off/stay out position -- is generally speaking, a conservative/republican one. Not a liberal/democrat position. After all, liberals/democrats want the govt involved in everything. So, my main gripe/focus was on the conservative/republican crowd that cherrypicks when it's ok for the government to get involved. -

I hope these aren't responses to my posts about big business. I wasn't trying to make the point that BB is doing anything wrong by looking out for itself. Just that I am frustrating by people (and they are often in BB) arguing that they want the government to stay out, and then demand the govt get involved when it suits them. Let's call a spade a spade. Don't get on a high horse about how the government should stay out of your backyard if you invite them in when it suits you. It was more of a theoretical argument than an anti-BB argument. Of course I agree that there is a lot of good (e -

I have never met a pure conservative economist who practiced what he preached. Unless he was teaching a class or arguing on a message board. So I am not sure we are saying the same thing. My point is that everyone -- even the folks arguing that government should stay out of [insert issue A] -- will turn around and demand the government get involved in [insert issue B] if that second issue benefits them in some way. In other words, if you are telling me you dont think the govt should ever get involved, I dont believe you. Respectfully, of course. I am not saying it is the govt's respon -

While we are at it, someone should really mention to him that Paul McCartney's last few albums suck. -

Big business can claim they want a laissez-faire free market economy all they want. They are the ones yelling loudest for the Fed to cut interest rates to (artificially) stimulate the economy and/or a government sponsored slush fund to rescue the lenders that made their own bed in this mortgage crisis. They will also be the ones yelling loudest for the government to bail out the next Long Term Capital Management. And there will be one. At the end of the day, big business wants whatever is best for them in any scenario. Whether that mean the government getting involved, or staying out of, -
I'm on the fence about the Marlins. On the one hand, I admire their non-textbook way of doing things. It has certainly resulted in more titles for them than for my team. They are clearly doing something very right. But something feels wrong about it -- and I (try to) say that as an impartial observer (since the Mets have clearly benefitted from Marlins fire-sales in the past). I would hate to be a Marlins fan waking up this morning knowing that my team just traded Cabrera because they "had" to. On the other hand, again, I think Willis is going to be a flop in the AL. And if these prosp

Haha, I didn't mean to put words in your mouth. Sorry about that. The point of the saying that I raised is that we have chosen to live with a system that, at it's core, values the freedom of the innocent (or wrongly accused) to the point that we are willing to let otherwise "guilty" people walk in the interests of protecting the innocent (or wrongly accused). For example, why are coerced confessions not admissable as evidence in many criminal trials? Because notwithstanding the fact that 90% of the time they are made by guilty people, we think that 10% of the time it is done by innocent -

Not to put words in your mouths, but I suppose you don't agree with the saying that it is better to have 10 guilty persons walk free than to have one innocent person jailed? It shouldn't matter what the split is if you believe in due process. I suppose it's all a matter of opinion, and I am certainly an idealist, but "wrong place wrong time" don't cut it for me. Charge these folks and give them due process. -
Awesome. Thanks for sharing.

As cryptique said, if they were military/war criminals they'd have more rights. End of story. -

I agree that the Clinton vs. Craig comparison is not apples to oranges, but it's not oranges to oranges either. Yes, you have two political figures with private lives that are (or are alleged to be) inconsistent with their public lives. But one of those (Clinton) used his political power to advance the rights of people while the other (Craig) sought to restrict the rights of people. If Craig is going to dedicate his political life to (among other things) restricting the rights of homosexuals, then I am very interested in that hypocrisy given that after taking a plea deal he tried to revok

Well, that scene started with Gere looking off into the distance and All Along the Watchtower playing. I can't say I've ever truly understood what the heck that song was about, but there seemed to be some themes from that song throughout those scenes... The wind was certainly howling, and the impending doom from the storm, certainly. Gere was a rider approaching on horseback. I think Pat Garrett may have also come to the town on horseback? Maybe Billy and Garrett were the two riders approaching? The theme of Vietnam seemed to be a backdrop of the whole scene so I thought the scenes were
