I saw the movie this weekend. I stayed away from all reviews of it (and threads of it ) on the theory that I wanted to go in with no expectations at all. I thought the film was wonderful. A brilliantly and beautifully shot film that was done so lovingly and even-handedly. Were parts of it self-indulgent? Yes, of course. That didnt change the fact that, to me, it was film shot by someone who really *got* it. The use of music was perfect to complement various scenes. Visions of Johanna was particulalry powerful, if I remember correctly. Kudos to Todd Haynes for blowing me away. I got

I saw The Naked Gun in the theater and the scene where Frank goes to the bathroom and forgets to remove his microphone nearly sent me to the hospital from laughing so hard. Good times. Edit: this may not be safe for work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzGe5hkmDb4

ysi - 10 best songs of 2007 compilation
MattZ replied to Synthesizer Patel's topic in Someone Else's Song
If there are 30 different best of 2007 lists posted here, how many are you really going to listen to? I think the point is to ensure that each mix is listened to by at least one person... Seems reasonable to me. -

Hey Porkchop - maybe it didnt get lost in the noise. Maybe people were done discussing. Everyone agrees it is reprehensible. Not much to discuss when everyone agrees. But thanks for posting this a 3rd time. -
I prefer the Paste list to the Harp list.

ysi - 10 best songs of 2007 compilation
MattZ replied to Synthesizer Patel's topic in Someone Else's Song
I am already in the process of compiling my best of 2007 list so I'd be game for this. We could use YSI with partners or just post the track listings in this thread so everyone can see everyone's. -
I disagree with your central point (my opinion, of course) and would say that I am frightened more by the innocent murder of folks when the murderers have a perceived basis for doing so (and especially when that basis is in religion or white supremacy or organized crime). I wouldn't describe saving lives through missionary work as "fanatacism" but again, much of the debate here between you and me derives from the definition of fanaticism. There is, of course, good and bad fanaticsm, and I assumed that by describing TDW as a fanatic you were insinuating a bad or intolerant type of fanaticism.

Interesting question. I'd say yes, I guess. But I would substitute [insert religion] for muslim above. And the reason it is worse is that, for fanatics, religion has a way of justifying it or rationalizing it or cleansing it. Something that should never happen for something as horrible as murder. Again, for the avoidance of doubt, I am talking about fanatics here. You want to tell me that religious fanatics who kill in the name of their religion are nutjobs no different that the nutjob who kills someone because he is simply a nutjob? Ok, I see your point. But there aren't groups of ot

Fair point. But then Mother Teresa and Gandhi are not annoying either. And as a side point, some have argued that Mother Teresa was dangerous (see: Hitchens) and I think a case could be made that Gandhi's fanaticism related less to religion than it did to self-determination for his country. But I am speaking out of school since I dont know all that much about him. And it's beside the point since I agree with you -- not all religious fanaticism is inherently dangerous. It depends on your definition of fanaticism, I suppose.
-
Of course. But atheists dont kill people because of their fanaticism about atheism. Fanatical muslims do. Fanatical atheists just annoy you. It's apples and oranges.
-
I don't think it's a stretch at all. And I dont see the relevance of the fact that people who aren't religious kill people. My point was never about religious vs. non-religioous folks in general. It was about fanatics. The very very small percentage of religious folks who are fanatics. Fanatical muslims kill others in the name of their religion. TDW may be annoying. But religious fanatics are not annoying. They are dangerous. There's a big difference.
-
Fanatical muslims kill innocent people. Fanatical christians do everything in their power to prevent gays from marrying. Fanatical atheists engage you in a debate on message boards. For shame.

For what it is worth, which is absolutely nothing, the NY Daily News listed their odds in the Santana race here: Yanks, 3:1 Bosox, 4:1 Angels, 5:1 Mets, 8:1 Dodgers, 12:1 Twins, 25:1
