  1. The reviews that I read posted on the RA board and brooklynvegan suggested that the show was low on energy and meandered. I don't think people complained about the number of songs so much as they complained about the fact that there were few opportunities to shake one's booty. If you look at that setlist, to be fair, you can't really tell. It certainly was slowed down and there were mellower versions of normally rockin tunes like Goodnight Rose and HH. Also, Off Broadway turned into a ten minute space jam at the end. For the avoidance of doubt, I did think the show was great. The band i

  3. Just wanted to add my review of last night's show in NYC. Some folks seemed to be disappointed with last night's show... Here's my thoughts. I'd be interested to hear what others think... First off, the band faced an impossible task last night. This was a halloween gig where everyone expected the band to pull out never-played gems or covers, to blow the doors off the place, or to play three sets. On top of that, you had the fact that this was the first real proper show in NYC after the release of Easy Tiger. I don't count the Hiro Ballroom gig which was announced a few days before that gi
  4. or: "I'm afraid I've got more in common with who I was than who I am becoming."
  5. Well, in fairness, the $150 seats are on the floor. You can get seats in the balcony for $50, I think. And, these days, you can easily spend $150 (or more) on tix to any Broadway show or a Madonna/Springsteen/Stones concert at MSG. So, it's not THAT crazy, as a concept. But you are right -- this is Calexico, Yo La Tengo, Joe Henry, etc. I love most of those bands, but $150 seems bizarre. But there I go rationalizing again... Also, in fairness, there are about 20 bands playing -- so the overhead for a show like this has to be pretty heavy, right? Speaking of 20 bands playing, how do th
  6. I am finally listening to this album proper. I am on track two, and I coud do without the Eddie Vedder tune, but I am totally digging the title track. Sonic Youth nails the feel of the tune. Love it.
  7. Wow. That hadn't even occurred to me. The fact that seats are $150 for ORCH and Jeff won't even be there made me think this was something I could live without. That being said, a rousing, everyone on stage, encore of I Shall Be Released with the man himself, a la The Last Waltz would be pretty freakin cool. And maybe, just maybe, worth $150. Damn $150.
  8. Just finished this. Could just as easily have posted it in the "what's right with this country" thread (i.e., Phillip Roth). Breathtaking.
  9. For someone who is regarded to be as classy as Joe Torre, this seems like a pretty classless move. I mean, I know that all is fair in love and war, and it's a business, but still. To come out and say that he'd be interested in the Dodgers job a few days ago when the Dodgers already had a manager is weak.
  10. I know that Joe Torre has been to the playoffs 13 consecutive times. I'd just like to say that I think, in those 13 years, I could have made the playoffs approx 5 times if I was the manager of the Yanks. That might not be Hall of Fame worthy, but that would still put me in the upper echelon of managers in baseball. And that makes me feel good about myself.
  11. Thin-skinned or not, if you are A-Rod, I don't know why you'd want to put up with the fans and/or the press in NY anymore. He can hit 50 HRs in LA and not have to deal with the headaches.
  12. Sorry I missed this... Happy birthday Bjorn.
  13. I have to think A-Rod wants nothing to do with NY. I think he'll end up with the Angels or Dodgers. Big market, sunny LA, hollywood, etc.
  14. Wright has offered in the past to move to 1B, so it could work... I agree, though, I dont see it happening.
  15. NY radio (WFAN) this morning was floating out the possibility that Torre, ARod and Mariano all end up with the Dodgers. LA can definitely afford him.
  16. I am just happy to have a thread where I can talk about the Mets again.
  17. I didnt watch last nights game and I have avoided the papers this am. Was the A-Rod announcement during the game a calculated move by Boras to get A-Rod as much cheap publicity as possible? If so, you gotta tip your cap to Boras. Even if you hate him. The guy knows what he's doing.
  18. I actually thought the same exact thing last night. This was the 4th time I've seen them, 2nd time with Neko and 1st time with Dan. Dan is the man. I was grinning from ear to ear whenever he came out. And Neko? Well. Let me just say that she is even more beautiful and her voice is even more stunning from 4-5 standing rows back at Webster Hall. The sound mix sucked and was inconsistent, the mics were all screwed up and giving off feedback, and Webster Hall lived up to its rep last night. Neko looked like she was ready to kill someone at one point, but she held it together and gave it
  19. I saw that before I asked here, but I figured what the heck. Ok, so let me rephrase -- what have the Hannukah shows been like in the past? Do they light a menorah or something? I am sure it will be a blast either way.
  20. The Hannukah shows at Maxwell's go onsale today (12/4-12/11). I am a (relatively) new convert. To the band I mean, not Judaism. Anyone have any suggestions? I obviously can't go to all 8 nights. Does it matter which ones I go for? What can I expect?
  21. Absolutely - James stole the show for me. He was hilarious. Someone asked him if he likes being in a band with a husband and wife and he shot back "I love it -- it means I always get my own room on the road." He also told the story of how his 8th(?) grade teacher really turned him on to rock music, and how he joked with him/her (?) that "you know this means that I have to fail your class now, right? It's all your fault." It was great for a one night thing. I'm with bedbug that I appreciated it more (I think) because I had seen them already.
  22. These are all great and fair points. I suppose I probably fall into the bucket of folks that ended up "selling out" (for lack of a better term) because I thought it was important for me to take care of my family and not leave it up to chance. So, I know exactly where you are coming from. I am just always frustrated by the lack of compassion that goes into the debate. I dont say that to suggest you feel otherwise -- just that that is what I found refreshing about TheMaker's post and the experiences he's had with the canadian system. Seems to me that so many people in this debate, as a g
  23. I saw them on the first stop of this tour in Brooklyn as part of the New Yorker festival. It was a tad different than the other shows (I thnk) because there was a moderator there from the magazine, but it was very cool. It was an acoustic set up and they spent a bunch of time chatting about where they came from, taking questions and requests from the audience and having an all around good time. Even with an acoustic set up they found a way to rock out to Pass the Hatchet and The Story of Yo La Tenga, so they arent limited by the acoustic set up in any sense. Ira brings his pedals. As one
  24. "should of" and "would of" instead of "should have" and "would have."
  25. I am looking forward to Ryan Adams on Halloween in NYC and Yo La Tengo at Maxwell's for 8 nights of the festival of lights.
