Detailed Info On New Shins Album out in January
MattZ replied to marino13's topic in Someone Else's Song
I saw the Shins last night in Brooklyn. Was pretty disappointed. I was definitely impressed with the new songs, though. I feel safe buying into the hype about this next album. I bet it will be top notch. -
Anyone else at this show? I have to say that as much as I looked forward to it, I was pretty disappointed. First time seeing both. I was most excited about the Shins and they just seemed to sputter through the set. Some really great moments and then some pretty substandard moments. James Mercer had to stop and start New Slang twice before giving up because he couldnt remember the lyrics (they encored with it to make up for it). Normally stuff like that is fun for me -- I like to see bands that are human and mess up. If I want a perfect recreation of the CD, I will stay home and listen t

These are much bigger venues than he has played on the last few tours -- I hope that the extra seats arent filled by folks going to see the opening bands and then leaving when Bob comes on. That would be lame. Last time I saw Dylan at MSG it was 3/4 full (at best) in 2001. I assumed he just didnt have the draw that he used to and that the smaller venues in subsequent tours was an acknowledgment of that. Or maybe since he'll be touring on a new album, there will be more peeps interested. I have said every year since the glory years of 2001 that I am going to take a break next time he com

So it looks like the new Dylan finally leaked...
MattZ replied to chriscolbert's topic in Someone Else's Song
But I thought Dylan's criticsm was of CDs in general as a medium -- not (just) shit production. EDIT: I also agree with Sir Stewart that who knows what the hell Dylan was talking about. -

My joke above notwithstanding, is the point of the article that CD volume is too loud and so consumers dont have a choice to listen at comfortable levels? What does this have to do with CDs as opposed to LPs? I would think this is just crappy production or a frustrating move in the industry to make the music as loud as possible (sort of like injecting fat into Chicken McNuggets to make them juicier). Right? Or is this a digital phenomenon? -

Can you please post a link to that article in English? -

Jon Papelbon is the best baseball thread ever
MattZ replied to bobbob1313's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Couldnt have said it better myself. I am going to miss that big blue waste of space. New stadiums with ample luxury boxes and pools for kids, etc. cater to folks that are there for reasons other than to watch a baseball game. That kills me. Good night for the Mets last night -- 1. Comeback from 6 runs down to win in walkoff fashion. 2. Delgado's 400th HR. 3. Glavine doesnt need surgery. 4. Pick up Shawn Green and $6.3 mil from the DBacks for next to nothing. -
Yeah, this thread has inspired me to dip into all my old school rap albums at home. Its been awhile since I listened to many of them. Its been a blast.

Anyone have any love for the soundtrack for Juice? So underrated. If I had thought of it, I would have had it in my top 10. Uptown Anthem (Naughty by Nature before they sucked), Nuff Respect (Big Daddy Kane before he sucked), title track (ErikB/Rakim), other tracks by EPMD, Too Short, Cypress Hill (before they got big), etc. There are definitely some clunkers on there, but the good stuff is top notch.

I'm just another loco kid from the street getting paid for my vocals? Loco is all over their stuff... But yes, you got me on that one.
-
Nothing personal. Just riffing on that line from the first album -- "dont you know I'm loco?"
-
Black Sunday, but not the first one? What are you, loco?

What portion of your musical collection features rap?

Trust me -- my head was spinning trying to come up with a good line. That was one of them, but then I thought that he would just roll his eyes and laugh at me if I did that. I was either going to drop the El Segundo line or tell him to wipe his feet really good on the rhythm rug. But then I just chickened out. -

Because I was too shy. I didnt want to bother him and I had no idea what to say. I didnt want to look like or sound like some loser fanboy. But he had no posse with him. He was by himself. I snuck a pic with my cellphone. But I didnt want to get busted so i only got a shot from behind. Here is the pic, but its hard to tell it was him... I cant figure out how to make the pic bigger. We made eye contact though. He knew that I was a fan. I suppose that was good enough at the time. But now, yeah, I regret not saying something. -

No idea where to put this so I guess its going here. No joke -- I ran into Q-Tip in the Energy Kitchen on 17th street bet 8th and 9th Ave in NYC yesterday. He and I were the only two guys in the place. I thought it looked like him and then he whipped out his cell phone and started talking on it. Bam! Q-TIp talking on his cell phone 3 feet away from me. I was thinking of dropping a line to the guy behind the checkout counter -- like not having money to pay and saying that I left my wallet in El Segundo, but then I figured that would be so lame. So I didnt say anything. I made eye cont -
Record industry to shut down tab sites next???
MattZ replied to MattZ's topic in Someone Else's Song
I think it has always been an issue in some form or another. For awhile, olga tried to stem the tide by restricting the reproduction of lyrics -- on the theory that the written lyrics of a song were copyrighted and to reproduce them would be an infringement. As far as I am concerned though, TAB is a totally different issue. It is a fan's interpretation of a song. I would say that the vast majority of all tabs on the internet are wrong. How is an incorrect reproduction of a song be a violation of a songwriter's copyright? Not to mention, even if you put down the right tab -- note for not -
I noticed that olga.net had been down for awhile. From today's new york times: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/21/technolo...agewanted=print Now the Music Industry Wants Guitarists to Stop Sharing By BOB TEDESCHI The Internet put the music industry and many of its listeners at odds thanks to the popularity of services like Napster and Grokster. Now the industry is squaring off against a surprising new opponent: musicians. In the last few months, trade groups representing music publishers have used the threat of copyright lawsuits to shut down guitar tablature sites, where users exchan

My world was turned upside down -- never to be the same -- when How I Could Just Kill A Man came out. That song simultaneously scared the shit out of me and made me want to bob my head up and down. Extra points for having Q-Tip in the video. Gotta give it up for psychobetabuckdown too, though. So great. Hole in the Head, Pigs, etc. So much classic stuff.
