Do you really mean this? I dont even like U2, but how could any fan of any band really think this? What's the point of liking a band if you don't think they can do better than above average? ETA: and no, I am not looking to be the guy who doesn't like U2 in the U2 thread. I was just lurking and thought that was an odd statement (regardless of the band).

I remember being so excited when Nintendo released Double Dragon on NES and I remember being devastated when I bought it and put it in to play and realized it wasn't the arcade version. Bastards. Two dudes fighting a bunch of other dudes to save the girl isn't enough to call it Double Dragon! I can't believe I still remember that.
-
Haha, that's awesome. I wasted my hours playing Double Dragon at the pizza place down the street.

If he said this, I think everyone would move on. Honestly.
-
Fine. No argument. Then say that. Dont get up there and ask us to believe that you really had no idea what you were doing. That you injected something into your ass over 100 times that you had to get from the DR because it's illegal in the US and you had no idea if it worked or not. Why come clean if you aren't going to come clean? EDIT: these are all rhetorical questions -- ARod doesnt have to answer to me. But if he thinks I believe him, he's wrong.

Who's happier with this signing? Braves fans or Mets fans?
-
No way. If you are man enough to sign a 10yr contract to make $250M, and you are man enough to mold your image, and present yourself as a businessman, you are man enough to know what you are doing. Give me a break with this "I was young" crap. 25 is not 18.
-
I'm sorry. 25 is not young.

press conference just ended. Oh and another thing, no one beleives that a top athelete on his way to HOF, injects something into his body for THREE YEARS and doesn't know what it is or what it does or if it works. Come on.

I've got some news for A-Rod... If the only way you can get it, is to buy it in the Dominican Republic and smuggle it into the country, it is not OVER THE COUNTER. Ridiculous. This guy is a joke.

This is a cool story, but I'm not sure I'd take this as Jay sticking up for Jeff. If I am Jay (or Jeff), I'd be pretty effing sick of hearing anyone yell out anything about Jeff (or Jay) at a show all these years later. They have both moved on, but folks still can't let go (see these threads). Whether someone is badmouthing Jeff or complimenting him, I just can't imagine Jay wants to hear about it at a Son Volt show. Just my $.02.

I was wondering what kind of martin that is too, and from looking at some other pics online, it looks like an 00-18, not a 000-18. But what do I know.
-
No, I know this. I was just questioning it in this specific case. It's an accepted explanation but seemed dubious based on the evidence I saw. Bobbob - thanks for that stat. Interesting.
-
I am sure you are right. But let's face it. It's not like he pitched 240 IP over 3 straight years. One year of overuse and that's it? Seems a bit overkill to me. Maybe the guy would have still broken down. Anyway, sorry to derail. I just find it interesting that "overuse" and "Dusty Baker" are always just accepted as the culprits.

Yeah, like I said, these are all sweeping generalizations. But if we acknowledge that these are broad brush strokes, as a general matter, Dems favor it and Repubs dont. There can be debates about a lot of things around here, but not that. Come on.
-
I know that someone here has the numbers handy (and I'd ask that they post them here), but every time Mark Prior comes up everyone just acknowledges that he was overused. The guy pitched over 200 innings once. Once. What am I missing? It has to be something.
-
bleedorange - you make some fair points, but you blow all credibility citing to DOMA as evidence of anything other than Dems being spineless (as cryptique points out). I hereby demand that you retract that point now if you have any interest in retaining credibility on any issues going forward. Everything that everyone is saying in here is a sweeping generalization. But you can't seriously be arguing that the Dems aren't, on the whole, in favor of same-sex marriage.

Seems to me that the happy medium is a stimulus bill stripped of any sort of chance of making a difference because it has to make everyone everywhere happy.

I am just stunned at how much ink is spilled over ARod signing a 10yr contract for $250MM, and how everyone complains about baseball players. And yet, Madonna made that in 1 yr.

I dont care if my view is uncommon. I ain't changing it for anyone!!

Don't kid yourself. I know plenty of people that think that NPR is left wing. So far as I can tell, this is because they will occasionally report on issues from the Palestinian perspective.

I wasn't sure if this would turn into a "recession/what sort of values do we have?" discussion or an "I can't believe that JOURNEY is on this list" discussion. In other words, whether it was appropriate for TTL or SES. Alas: 1. Madonna: $242,176,466 2. Bon Jovi: $157,177,766 3. Bruce Springsteen: $156,327,964 4. The Police: $109,976,894 5. Celine Dion: $99,171,237 6. Kenny Chesney: $90,823,990 7. Neil Diamond: $82,174,000 8. Rascall Flatts: $63,522,160 9. Jonas Brothers: $62,638,814 10. Coldplay: $62,175,555 11. The Eagles: $61,132,213 12. Lil Wayne: $57,441,334 13. AC/DC: $56,505,296 14.

just to chime in with a follow up thought about my dislike of Desire given the last couple of posts ... I realize that I also don't like the duets with Joan Baez. So it may just be that when I want my Dylan fix, I want my Dylan fix straight. No ice. No water. Neat. I love his voice. It just doesnt sound good to me when it's mixed with female vocals. To each his own, I suppose.

Elvis is King! (I am contractually required to post that in any Costello thread)

No. Coffee/caffeine are not illegal. Just like eating 50 steaks for a protein overload is not illegal, but injecting your ass with illegal protein supplements equal to 50,000 steaks is. ETA: Lammy, I agree with you on much of this stuff, but I am having a hard time understanding how you draw the line between amphetamines and steroids. They are both illegal substances used to give players an edge. Safer to draw your line on the other side. Obviously, in my mind.
