  1. I understand that this story is not analagous to the example I gave. I am suggesting that there is a slippery slope and it's not hard for me to imagine this happening in a smaller town where there arent 15 pharmacies within a five mile radius. Is it hard for you to imagine?
  2. So do I, but that's where I think the slippery slope is. Unless it's all or nothing, aren't we just talking about what people's definitions of different deals are?
  3. Ryan refers to this new album a few times in that apology as a "dream come true." Most people don't seem to like it all that much. I think its probably hard enough to have people boo you when you leave a show early because you are sick. But people trashing your dream come true? What going to happen then? I worry about that guy.
  4. But it's not prescription drugs vs. abortion. It's prescription drugs vs. contraception. Do we have a legal mandate to penicillin? What if I open a pharmacy and I decide that antibiotics are overprescribed so I don't sell them? Sure, it's my right to do so. No one can stop me. I'd also understand why other people would be bothered by that. Especially in a small town.
  5. My point is that everyone is falling back on "there's other options." That's fine and I am not worried about this issue because I agree with that. But there could be a slippery slope here. Not everyone has internet access to mail order. Not everyone has a "right" to buy birth control within 25 miles of their house either. But I do find it disturbing that a "pharmacy" starts making moral judgments about what they will or won't sell. You can certainly invent reasons not to sell other medications as well. It's a private business that can and will do whatever it wants. I can admit that and
  6. Would folks that don't have a problem with this have a problem with it if this was the only pharmacy in town? In a 25 mile radius? And then isn't it just a matter of degrees? And if it's a matter of degrees, what about slippery slopes?
  7. destroyer's rubies. Dan Bejar is truly one of a kind.
  8. Sure, but what I am saying is that market growth can't be easily tied to an administration. So anecdotally, if you believe that economy of the mid90s was a result of Reagan's policies in the 80s, then you'd say that the market grew in spite of the capital gains under Clinton. And that capital gains is a lagging indicator. Same would hold true for any boom/bust cycle over those 4 decades of history. So, I think Republicans would say that the reason you take home more in a Dem administration as you say is because they follow Republican administrations that put the economy on the proper cours
  9. Yes, the historical evidence that you present directly contradicts your father's position. I think most republicans would argue that the economy's growth under Clinton resulted from the Reagan/Bush policies, and so Clinton caught a windfall. But either way, your argument would still hold that higher capital gains rates do not hurt a growing economy. Hard to tie up the causation though, since no one knows how long the seeds have to be planted before the plant grows.
  10. I hereby put this thread out of its misery.
  11. you are misunderstanding. Not everyone can start at the same time in large races. So racers start in staggered groups. The person with the "fastest time" didn't finish "first."
  12. Anyone running for president is ego-driven. Come on. Nader isn't beating McCain or Obama in that department either.
  13. #17 When I pick up a book of poems, I always flip it open and set up camp where fate meets my thumb. I refuse to allow myself To be drawn in on page one Or to be left solemn at the last page. It is contrived and dishonest. Whatever qualities make a poem first or fifth in a collection make me squirm. Whether I can identify them or not. This calculating omnipresence is haunting. Reading a collection of poems in order is like turning from Oregon to Pennslyvania in your Rand-McNally road atlas. It doesn
  14. All my money is in a savings account and a CD making between 2.75 and 4.25 interest. I dont have more money than I can ever spend. And I don't have all that much power. Not really sure what your point is. You can do the same and make just as much money during this collapse as I am.
  15. I'd also like to say with a bit of tongue firmly implanted in cheek that I find it amusing how many saracastic Radiohead references have ended up sprinkled throughout other threads by folks not participating in this discussion. Sort of proving Berman's point.
  16. I dont think Berman is saying that the music has to be uplifting for a band to be the best in the world. I think he doesn't like Radiohead all that much, made a fair critique of their music, and the discussion has now turned into "Radiohead sucks" vs. "Radiohead is great" talk. In fact, Berman admits that Radiohead is considered the greatest band in the world now. That's a title that has been bestowed upon them by others, but he wishes that some other band held that title. Nothing wrong with that. Sure, no one thinks that music can start a revolution, but Berman thinks that 30 years from
  17. I blame Powell and have been pretty vocal about it on here. But I dont blame him for being misled whereas everyone else was a "liar." I blame him for having doubts at the time and not standing up and vocalizing them at the time. He allowed himself to be steamrolled and then told everyone about his doubts after the fact. He allowed himself to be a pawn at the UN. He should have fallen on his sword if he was boxed in and thought he couldn't stop the process.
  18. I see what people don't love about this album. Man.
  19. I dont really understand censorship on band message boards at all, but I certainly don't understand why a thread defending Ryan would be deleted. If your statement above is true, why would they delete something like that? I could *maybe* understand someone getting trigger happy and deleting a thread where fans are piling on Ryan for cancelling the show.
  20. I was being strong and resisting listening to this early. So much for being strong.
  21. I saw The Best of Youth last week and meant to mention that here. 6hrs. Pretty great overall, but uneven in spots, I thought. Definitely recommend it. The closest thing to a book in movie form that I've seen. Those 6hrs allow for character and emotional development in a way that your standard 2hr fare just won't allow.
  22. So, at the risk of being hyperbolic, it looks like Al-Qaeda has endorsed McCain. I guess Powell wasn't the last big endorsement out there. http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/news/2008..._site_backs.php Al-Qaida-linked Web site encourages pre-election attack as way to usher in McCain presidency PAMELA HESS AP News Oct 21, 2008 22:41 EST Al-Qaida supporters suggested in a Web site message this week they would welcome a pre-election terror attack on the U.S. as a way to usher in a McCain presidency. The message, posted Monday on the password-protected al-Hesbah Web site, said if al-
