  1. That's what I would've thought too.
  2. It's basically a choice between A) If you make a claim, you live up to it. If you make a claim, it's okay to not live up to it. Don't make impossible claims. (And remember which party claims ownership of consistency, too.)
  3. It's about the rhetoric itself. Every time one of their members makes a moral indiscretion, it should be a chalkmark against the "moral majority" claim. Like I said, nobody should ever claim moral high ground because for the vast, vast, vast majority of people, it's impossible. Defending the use of that rhetoric gives them a free pass to continue to make dubious claims like that one. I wouldn't have Democrats make that claim, and I wouldn't have Republicans make it, either. It's foolish to make such an impossible claim, but the Republicans did.
  4. Thanks? Look- I'm not saying that the Republicans' morality should hinge upon the actions of a few. However, I think that if a group is going to claim to be the "moral" majority, then the group must answer when their members prove otherwise. (Bottom line: don't claim to be the moral majority, because it's impossible to make that true.) But they made the claim, and they must live up to it. Otherwise, the claim has no weight, in my opinion. As for Haggard, I think it's safe to include him in the party. Regular bumbling folks don't have weekly conversation with the party's leader.
  5. Republicans did call themselves the "moral" party, which to me seems pretty inclusive. If they take responsibility for being inclusively the moral party, shouldn't they take responsibility when things go awry? To me, it would be like Bush taking credit for low gas prices, but not for high gas prices. I think the mistake, though, is claiming moral high ground at all. For that alone, they kind of deserve to be rebuked when it's revealed that celebrated (Haggard) or official (Foley) members of their party are, in fact, by their definition "immoral." I'm wondering when people will start to as
  6. Hmm. I might have to rethink my decision (to vote for all cartoon characters).
  7. Yeah, that's true. Sorry 'bout all this. There's always the Auditorium show! And you can (should) still go; you just won't see Wilco there.
  8. That's an accident. Sorry about that.
  9. I'm interested to see how society will reflect upon the Saddam death sentence. My first thought was "All that for this?"
  10. They'd probably be perfect for the military!
  11. Are you implying that every Republican, some Dems, and some Undecideds are too uneducated/stupid to put it into context?
  12. Maybe my lack of TV watching is to blame. I didn't even hear about this until today.
  13. Maybe. I haven't seen much of it in the news, to be honest, and I'm a pretty avid reader. It'll definitely be on Fox News tonight, but- It seems like the biggest part of this is that conservatives want it to die because the clarification is much more damning than Kerry's gaffe. Dems want him to keep apologizing and explaining what he really meant.
  14. I gotta say, even though what Kerry said is true (and it is, given the well-documented preying on the poor, and the fact that the Pentagon recently reduced the restrictions on ex-cons and low-IQ enlistees), it's certainly something that shouldn't be said. At all. Especially this close to the election. What a dick.
  15. I'd like to publicly announce my availability to create hilarious campaign ads.
  16. Some people can be folk heroes outside of the context of American standards/morals. See: Che Guevara - Not a good guy, still folk hero to some. Just sayin'
