  1. do you no longer have Banjo? i can't keep them all straight But that one has my favorite name!
  2. yesterday I flipped on the news while I ate lunch and then an hour later found myself watching "Linday Lohan's Top 10 Most Embarassing Moments" - I knew then some drastic measures were necessary. So, I canceled our cable subscription...... Granted, it was for financial reasons (our cheap rate expired), but eliminating 24/7 LiLo coverage is almost a better excuse.
  3. I know what I am getting Banjo for Christmas!!
  4. I adore David Halberstam - was so sad when he died. I love listening to his interviews......you should look through the NPR archives, he is so engaging to listen to.
  5. I keep telling my mom she needs a cat in Woodstock - but she won't believe me. I will keep working on her. Her house is so small and mellow and it just NEEDS a cat sitting in the window, keeping a lazy eye on the premises. It would be good for bear watch!! Let me dig out the address and I will email it to you. Pastries sound delish!!! We could mosey into Woodstock proper on Wednesday morning, before you head back, if you like.
  6. that's light for lite rock
  7. my mom and I can do some food shopping during the day- so, it's not a problem.
  8. sounds good sweetie - how are you with stairs? I know you are on a cane. If you can't do stairs, we can arrange something for you. I am so excited to see you guys!!!
  9. I don't get in until Monday (late)....so....anytime Tuesday would be great! I am offering to host a dinner at my mom's place (and she has an extra bedroom - if Jen wants to spend the night)
  10. I have made a number of requests at our library from this growing list!! I have heard of that Maudie - I bet Em would love that. I realized yesterday that I actually didn't do a lot of reading between the ages of 13-18.......I was pretty tuned out during my teenage years, which has left a huge gap in my knowledge of lit for that age range.
  11. Graham's mom has made some yummy dishes from the CSA veggies - I had never had beet tops before! They were delicious. $25 a week isn't bad at all......go for it! (and expect us for dinner one of these days )
  12. I am going to have to bookmark this thread for birthdays and Christmas! So many great suggestions!! I loved the book Reviving Ophelia, though I read it in my early college days - when Em was still a wee baby. My mother in law mentioned it last week - so, maybe it's a sign I revisit it.
  13. yeah I guess the 1st album wasn't that bad - I wish I had a record player, I'd love to hear that 7" right about now. I just gave her the Somery CD - though I have a few others, if she wants to expand I have a great book about girl zines - though some of it may be a bit to sexual for someone her age.
  14. As you would imagine - I have both of those.....good picks!!! and you have great taste......you gave her Frindle and she loved that one!! Were you the person who sent us Stargirl? I can't remember who sent that! We read that one together......I bet she'd like to read it again, even!
  15. stop it !!! you are going to make me pop my blood clot where my tooth used to be from laughing so hard!!
  16. speaking of what I loved.....Emily just came out to me and said, "do you have some good CDs that I would like?" I sent her off with Descendents, Operation Ivy, White Stripes and the Zero Boys. She is rocking out in her room, and I think a little astounded that her mom has such good taste. She asked about Operation Ivy - and I explained how I was friends with their guitarist who later went on to front Rancid (as we all know) and that they stayed with us on tour when I was pregnant with her and she was at a Rancid show in my belly, before they ever put out their first album. She thought that
  17. I picked it up after hearing you all talk about it. It had been tempting me for some time.
  18. On my trip to Borders this morning to get Em a book I picked up Water for Elephants I started reading it this morning and it is really good....looking forward to an afternoon with it. Back to studying tomorrow - I am taking the day off!
  19. I loved The Pigman......also loved Love and Rockets when I was a teen. While in school Emily had to read a certain amount of time a week - it was like pulling teeth. (ouch, no pun intended) With her bi-polar issues, it is hard to make her do much of anything without a battle. So, with books - I kind of nudge I LOVED Anne Frank when I was in Jr High. There are so many great suggestions. I will take a peek through the list of book award winners......she has read a few of those in the past.
  20. thanks Kris! I just ordered that one and saved a few bucks from the Amazon price! I think she will enjoy that.
  21. I think she'd really like that! I will look for it.
  22. I picked her up The Diary of Anne Frank, as she has never read that - as well as another one that looked promising. I can't remember the name now.
  23. Kevin She did the Judy Blume thing a few years ago. Christy, thanks for the recommendations - I was hoping you would chime in. That Benedict Society one looks promising...... I am not sure she would care for Nancy Drew. I will look up the Selznick one.
  24. I thought this might be a good place to throw out this question. My 13 year old, Emily, (unlike mom) has never been an avid reader - but does read from time to time. There were series' that she liked when she was younger, but now that she is a bit older I am having a little more difficulty trying to pick out books for her to read. I just spent 30 min in the Young Adult section of Borders looking for a book to pick up for her. It seems 95% of books for teenage girls are totally centered around pining for boys. And honestly, while I know this is a big part of teenagedom, I have to admit that
  25. Indeed......or just buy a Honda. Best cars out there.
