I'm not in anyway challenging what y'all are saying about this being a re-election boon for 45- his entire presidency defies logic. I will say that if that's true it also defies logic. So voters would say: this guy didn't verifiably commit treason against our nation, so hell yeah I'm voting for him?

Wow that Mueller thing didn't turn out as bad for Trump as I predicted.

Finally got around to La Belle Sauvage from The Book of Dust trilogy by Phillip Pullman, you know the new entries into The Golden Compass/His Dark Materials books. I feel like a huge dork after typing that. Anyways, 150 pages in and it's fantastic. Vivid, fast moving, full of mystery, great economy of language and efficient characterization. If the Golden Compass books felt like they were for 13 year olds- but so good anyone could read them- this feels more like an easy read aimed at adults who loved the other books as kids.

I'm new to her and psyched as well. God she ripped the roof off that place at the Grammys. The album version of that tune is so great too, really well produced. I like that she's supposedly an "americana" artist but her latest record sounds like Jeff Buckley and vintage Radiohead at moments.

Jeff Tweedy — 3 March 2019, Dallas, TX (Majestic Theatre)

I don't mean to be prejudiced, but anyone who fills a flask with clear liquor is not to be trusted. -
Yes, thank you for putting this into words. I feel like none of the pundits, or news comedians have hit this point yet. Cohen did lie. He lied to protect Trump. You can't then call him a liar in order to protect Trump yourself when his very lies were in the service of Trump.

Yay, it's true! Does anyone know if this is another full length, or just a bonus track EP?

Full dang circle.

I think so, but I'm not quite the political/legal scholar I was describing above. I hope we're both right.

I think the hardest possible outcome for me to accept will be never knowing the basics of what's in the report. That might happen too.

Carve your initials in the tree over there.

I hate Ann Coulter, but if she's ragging on Individual 1 that might mean a shift in his base which is great. I think I said it before (maybe biannually) but holy shit, what a time to be a legal scholar. This emergency declaration is going to play out in court and it's got tremendous civic and constitutional implications. And a legal scholar I am not, but I feel that the semantics of the word "emergency" should come in to play. To me the word contains some sense of something new happening. As in, you can't have a decades old emergency. Our situation at the border is decades old.

The question returns: Is it possible to enjoy an artist's output and disregard their abhorrent behavior? I'm not talking about buying concert tickets or new records, but does this mean 'Love is Hell' is no longer fun to listen to? I struggled with this when Louis C.K. got into trouble. I so loved his work, and now I hate him as a dude. Haven't decided if I can keep those things separate, but I can understand both sides of the argument.

At this point I wouldn't make any assumptions about Wilco's studio process. While Jeff does seem pretty locked in to a regiment working by himself in songwriting/pre-production, the band has set a lot of different agendas for how they have completed a lot of different records.

Someone using the extensive Let It Be footage is long overdue good news. The fact that the someone is Peter Jackson is a bonus.

Fender Custom Shop gets on Nels' bad side wiih NAMM show stunt

Yeah, I saw that on his facebook. Pretty lame. I don't know why they wouldn't want to just make a Nels Cline signature with him. -
I dislocated my shoulder for the second time (first time was on a half pipe) playing tether ball against a student when I was a student teacher years ago. Not my proudest moment.

I'm proud to report 4 square is one of the most popular sports at the elementary school I teach at. As for variations of wall ball- this is a perfect example of what seems consistent in most of these favorite toys: the simplicity of the toy enables the complexity and depth of play. It's why legos always beat out those battery powered flipping dogs in the mall in the 90's. All of that technology allows the toy to do one thing, the simplified technology of the lego allows it to do a million things.

Connor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers
lost highway replied to lost highway's topic in Someone Else's Song
Same. I was unimpressed with the Bright Eyes phenomenon at its peak, but his tenacity and authenticity have won me over as a general fan of him as a person. I'm not always taken with his trademark shaky vocals as much as I admire the guy, but I think they're a nice contrast to Phoebe's more conventionally pretty sounding vocals. Also he's chilled out on the 'coked out guy telling-all during an anxiety attack' performance style as he's aged. -
I don't know if you folks have tuned into Phoebe Bridgers around here. She's the latest to corner the market on wrenchingly effective, sad-bastard folk music. She teamed up with similarly haunting Julien Baker to create Boygenius last year which was also a great collaboration. Well now her and Oberst have dropped a whole record that's pretty great: https://open.spotify.com/album/5622zSt4RLqNSPShdqmWpj They also showed up on Colbert and got him to honor their 80's 1-800 vision by putting a lo-fi video feed up of it: https://youtu.be/7DSO-w_AxgQ

Those look awesome. I'm not sure if they're still made, but there's probably something similar.

I was playing with my 2 1/2 year old daughter last night and thinking about the difference between the toys we think are cool, but never play with, and the ones that are an endless source of enjoyment. I remember being a kid and having a closet full of crap that looked flashy in the store, or in a commercial, but got boring really quick. This brings in the elite class of toys that aren't actually a waste of space. I'm wondering what yours are from your childhood, or for the parents on here, the ones that are worth the material they're made of. Right now ours are: Anything crayola Play-do

A. Excellent Wilco reference. B. This seems an especially ripe area for sociological/political science study. I head a story today about how Doug Jones had fake news and planted, obviously fake Russian bot profiles pushing for Roy Moore. Unfortunately this trash is not only a GOP thing. It makes sense that many people breeze past it, but there's still a lot there (especially 2016) that's hard to know or measure.
