  1. Hitler took away guns, so did modern day Norway. The U.S. has relatively lax gun laws, and so does Pakistan. Where do you want to live? All of these cheap shots at fascism, or failed states on either side are intellectually lazy. You can find plenty of good and bad examples no matter what your argument because GUN LAWS AREN'T WHAT MAKES A GOVERNMENT. If your strongest argument for your second amendment rights is "Hitler took away guns", then you have successfully proven how obsolete your gun privileges are. (also of note is the fact that the Obama administration hasn't made a single
  2. For those of you who say you can't get rid of the millions of guns in the country here is a viable alternative:
  3. And then we would taste the tyranny that the Australians and Norwegians have suffered so brutally through..... And then we would be left with only more precise and effective firearms than the people who wrote the amendment into the constitution..... A single bolt action .22 is a perfectly reasonable way to practice marksmanship or keep the deer population in check (if you have the skills), it would also be an incredibly difficult weapon to commit a massacre with. I for one love your slippery slope scenario.
  4. I think adequate human ethics have often been able to see their way around law. There have been many legal situations in the history of law that would excuse things most reasonable people would find unjust and despicable.
  5. Now that's some callous bullshit. I've had two cars broken into, if someone would have shot the person doing it I'd call them a murderer. When I was in high school I was in an immature egging, tp'ing, vandalism battle with some other kids. One of my buddies must have crossed a line when he let the air out of one of their tires. A week later my family woke up to the sound of a boulder going through my windshield out front. Years later one of the dudes confessed (we're more or less friends now) to me at a bar. He said the guys were drunk and riled up- they really crossed the line. I gues
  6. Person on internet forum investigates political thread and dismisses unoriginal polemic that will not change the world.
  7. Yes!!! I've been digging this for early morning work:
  8. I find it to be a curious song.... which is good. Even if it doesn't work (my mind is not made up), it's better than another song about love sprinkled with nature imagery.
  9. The thing that I always come back to, is there are the Wilco songs on the album, the songs that don't make the album that end up on B-Sides, special downloads, soundtracks etc, but then there are the others the ones that you never ever hear. Some of the material in the Wilco book was like that; it was as much interesting to listen to so you could understand their process and things that had to be tried, as it was just good music. With the way the band operates I bet there are some 20 odd recorded songs that no one has ever heard from SBS, WTA, TWL alone. The problem with that concept, is i
  10. I can't help but wonder if Wilco's label independence allows them more freedom in the album release cycle. It seems like a lot of bands that ditch their labels end up messing around with the typical 3 year album- tour cycle; they might release things more suddenly, do some EP's, internet-only singles etc. More interesting is what musical turn another Wilco record might take.
  11. Yeah there was an NPR story where she was back at Wavelab with Craig Schumacher working on new stuff. I'm sure it will be mind-blowing. She's been on a roll since.... well since she started.
  12. I appreciated the full download and gave it a spin. I thought the production was perfect, the rhythm section is magic, and the horns are outstanding. The blend into aggressive rock seems to work better than one would expect, and the appropriation of Nirvana, Radiohead, and Pixies riffs seems pretty cool. I also like the female vocals, as well as a lot of the effects on the mc's voice. That said, some of the lyrics are awful. Between the sporadic gangsta' shit, and hitting the trifecta of 7th grade poetry rhymes ( cry/die, tears/fears, thinkin'/drinkin') I felt disappointed that an otherwi
  13. The right wing cries that reducing military spending will damage employment is a hilarious, incidental, acknowledgement that the Keynesian perspective is valid.
  14. http://www.shakingthrough.com/artists/episodes I know its' kind of "watching and listening to" but this seemed a good thread to share. The premise of the show is they record and film a band who has to finish one song in the studio in one day. You get to see the problem solving process and hear the artist, producer, and engineer reflect on how it went. All very hi-fi, all very free. Better still engineer dorks such as myself can download the tracks to mix at home.
  15. I would argue that musically, not politically, the left wing has a stronger showing. I can listen to stuff I don't agree with (but it's harder to relate to), nevertheless the right can keep Nugent, and Hank Jr., and I'll keep REM, Wilco, Springsteen, and Pearl Jam. In another political question, I've been hearing a lot about the change in the country's view of gay marriage. There was a poll recently that showed more for than against. How can the republican party come to terms with the current prevailing attitudes and growing demographics of our country?
  16. I like how the cool people on here debated it out, kept sharing articles, checked the grammar of my "edition", brought their varying perspectives into the fold. This place was my often my favorite part of the sometimes cantankerous election disputes. I hope there are a bunch of political threads going forward, I might even start a couple. As far as the election going it's a pretty done deal. Loved and locked.
  17. I've got a late entry: Forgetters S/T. New album from Blake Schwarzenbach of Jets to Brazil/ Jawbreaker fame. Manages to blend the strengths of both of his former bands. A real grower.
  18. One of the top contemporary bands for my money. I'm pumped, except they're skipping my town on tour.
  19. I like when Jon Stewart played a clip from Wonka about the people who wish to secede: "Oh no.... stop... don't go...." barely batting an eyelash.
