There actually was an idea thrown out there for a hot minute about NOT replacing Brent and going out as a 5 piece, from what I've read. But ultimately Garcia had to know that would mean a lot more of the burden for sound falling in his lap. I think Jerry loved Brent for a number of reasons - #1 being (of course) he was a real PLAYER who was inventive and sympathetic to the band. But he also knew he could cruise through a set and take it easy and Brent would be there with the force of his musical personality to make things sound good. Basically, he just didn't want to have to work that hard any

There's the yin/yang of what you posted (I haven't seen the movie yet - no places anywhere nearby). The first thought is absolutely a wonderful thing - exactly what I want to see. That Dew is (for most of us, I'd assume) the first exposure to the Dew we came to know and love. That song is EASILY the #1 JG GD ballad of choice for me, although I love damn near all of them. Thought #2 is fucking criminal, an abomination. The fucking guy was in the band 5 YEARS. I don't care WTF anyone thinks of Vince Welnick, he was a band member, for Chrissakes. For many, that incarnation was the only GD they

I've seen DSO 4 times in about a 5 year span ('99-'04 ish). This was when they did full GD shows (do they still do that?). Anyway...I called all those shows but one (which I think was a '77 show) before they announced it at the end. My friends would freak out on me haha. I must be 'on the spectrum' or something.

5/8/77 debuts on Billboard charts at #10 - highest-charting GD release since In The Dark, 30 years ago this Summer. Amazing.

That was one that was in my first batch or two of cassettes. Still play it, still love it. I'm a big fan of Keith's first month or two.

The last time I ever saw the band "go out" into a total improv jam was on 6/23/93 - they jammed the end of Terrapin for a good long time into the Drums. And then they went into Dark Star out of Space. All downhill after that for me.

I went straight for that one after work. Eyes > Wheel > Wharf Rat > Around, US Blues. Played just fine, thank Dog. That packaging is fucking surreal, they seem to out-do themselves with nearly every new box.

I've "been shown the light"! Nice little scratch on 5/7 disc 3, though. I'll have to play that one first.

"Relatively" speaking...possibly! But there's plenty of tasty nuggets from that first month. And the setlists get pretty interesting the farther we get into the year.

I'm looking forward to it. Hey, it rains every day now so it's not like I can go mow my yard or anything.

Mine came yesterday. I should've blasted it after work, instead I wasted valuable time watching the Cubs look like a collection of rank amateurs. LOL

Without question the Allmans were one of the very best live bands I've ever seen. I got to see them up close (2nd row) once and Betts blew my mind. He's truly one of the great Rock guitarists ever.

I think it's telling that there are 3 Dick's Picks from a 10 day period from Sep. '72. They were on fire from Europe on.

I have the official releases of everything but I can't see forking over the money for the accompanying CD release for about a half dozen tunes that have "never been officially released".

I had a few instances many many years ago when I had control of the turntable at a party where the booze flowed and the gender ratio was just right, and Full House, and especially Blow Your Face Out were my preferences to play in that situation. If you want to keep everybody in a good mood you cannot go wrong with those records. They are two of the best live LPs, and if you can't get off on those there might be no help for you.

That Keystone stuff is gold standard stuff for sure. All of it, but especially Like A Road. The Road Trips 1970 with Wales is the other one I never tire of.

I love all the GD guys, in varying degrees! But being in the room with Jerry was something I can take with me the rest of my days. So yeah, Jerry!

I was 8 years old when "Get Yer Yay Ya's Out" came out. I got it for Christmas I think. Oh Carol was one of my favorite things on that record, still is. I didn't know much of anything about Berry at that age, but I eventually did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW0cVp0WWkk

One could argue for Weir as well.

Oh I would definitely say China Cat, St. Stephen & MOTM are the best things on the record. China Cat is a masterpiece, one of the best things they ever did.
