  1. Pathos, and his ability to convey that through his words, but especially the voice he uses to serve those words, is rare on the scale Jeff can do it. All the sides of his (or anyone's, for that matter) personality are revealed - from the fragile romantic, to the wizened truth-teller, to the angry, frustrated punk, the optimistic bringer of good news, the tired, burned out adult, the enigmatic wordsmith who tantalizes with his mastery of language...just to mention what comes into my head at the moment. When you add all of that to a guy who (by what I've heard from many of you here) is a rema
  2. I was able to see only the first 4-5 songs on my lunch hour, then back to work. Neil sounded a little shaky, vocally, on Long May You Run in particular. Then he said something like, "I'm really nervous". I thought that was remarkable. Here's a guy who has played in stadiums full of people off and on his whole adult life but a live stream made him nervous.
  3. I watched it, Mr. H. On the plus side - the tempo didn't drag like it has for most of what I've heard. The down side - super short, "AM radio version" - no minor key jam AT ALL, and Mayer's tone was really really thin.
  4. I miss Phil, too - but no one can say Oteil's not a VERY good singer. IMO he should sing ALL the Jerry ballads. He certainly has a quality to his vocals that makes it ok for me. Jeff certainly has earned the position on the keys. As far as Mayer goes - it just like he's out of his element. I know the guy can fucking play, he can play some blues. Can you imagine how it might work if he played a Cream tribute?
  5. I have 3rd row DFC for this Sunday night! I love this. Perfect. I guess I'll never 'get it' either, brother.
  6. I think if this DeadCo LLC thing was writing and performing newer music written with this lineup in mind I'd probably be more receptive to it. Hell, Weir's last LP was pretty decent, I'm sure Mayer has lots of tunes lying around, Hart just released a new album, and I'm sure the rest of the band has numerous musical ideas that could/should come to life onstage. But the question is - how many people would go to a 20K seat hockey arena and pay $100 and up to see it? A rehash of 40 year old tunes, played at depressing slow tempos, just isn't something I can get off on. And I have tried, I've lis
  7. For God's sake, if they have HQ stuff available bring it on. We're not getting any younger.
  8. That is fucking incredible, man! That's the best story I've heard in quite some time.
  9. I can't let the day pass without mentioning the 11/2/69 Dark Star. My favorites from the year that aren't 2/27 (Live Dead - perfection, no one argues that!) are 4/22 The Ark and 11/2 Family Dog. It mines much of the same territory of 11/8 (official release) but I think it's better.
  10. I did that with a LOT of UT songs on that page. I forced bandmates to learn 'em.
  11. WOW, folks. America's National Pastime.
  12. I was thinking the same thing last night. Has to be the reel ran out and nobody changed it out. But I'm speculating.
  13. I watched a 4 minute snippet of the Rather/Ged interview. It was one of the more heartwarming things I've seen in the last year. The story of his parent's meeting.
  14. A couple of very weird stats from last Sunday: The Colts were shutout for the first time in 24 YEARS (1993). By the Jags. The Bears beat the Panthers 17-3 and threw 7 passes THE ENTIRE GAME. I know the offense didn't get into the end zone, but still...WTF is Woody Hayes advising this team from The Great Beyond?
  15. At the beginning of the month I had Tribe over LA in 6. Well, I was wrong. Revised: LA over Astros in 6. Hoping to be wrong again.
  16. I've heard that band on the radio a few times. I was pretty impressed.
  17. I'll be damned! If memory serves me those were the first shows Bear was working after he got out of jail.
  18. You can't go wrong with any of that run, but I would have preferred 8/24 (Dark Star > Dew is possibly my favorite for that combo). But...8/25 is a Betty, and 8/24 is not. So there's my answer.
  19. I counted at least 2 dozen heart attacks here last night. That game was INSANE.
  20. Mold. MOLD. One of the stranger stories I've heard in awhile.
  21. RIZZO FO' SHIZZO that is all...
  22. I watched that whole Winterland show that night he passed. That's a REALLY nice example of early Heartbreakers. I was like WOW on his "rap" during the Dark End of the Street cover. So young and full of piss and vinegar.
  23. Man, I thought the Cubs would be extremely lucky to eke out a victory over Strasburg. He's a definite Cy Young candidate, most likely the winner in the NL. He was a total beast, throwing a no-no through 5. We manage to scratch out 2 runs in the 6th, all after 2 outs (something we were NOT doing before the break in July). Then Rizz goes opposite field for an RBI double later in the game. BUT - The Professor was as good as he's been all year, my man Carl Jr. went 1-2-3 in the 8th, and Davis nailed it down in the 9th. 3-0. We STOLE one. 12 hours of playoff ball today. Felt like the opening
