I never really got all psyched up about much of the Aoxomoxoa material - Doin That Rag never really took off, it's a very clunky, cumbersome song. Cosmic Charlie? Hit or miss. EDIT: Mexicali HAS to be on the list, too. I've heard some good ones, but..

That show is definitely one of those "looks great on paper, but.." shows. I was there, went away very disappointed - that's about the time I became jaded. Of course that could change in a tour or two (Summer '89!). The Dew at that 4/13 show had the loudest crowd roar I ever heard at a show - the place just exploded at the peak.

I should have thrown a link over here this morning (my bad!) but I hope some of y'all listened in on David Gans' "Dead To The World" annual GD marathon today. As usual, amazing stuff. I got completely blown out by the hour of 8/3/69 Family Dog. Never heard it before. It featured guests on sax and electric violin that nobody was quite sure was. After hours of debate on the subject, and many call ins it seems that it could have *possibly* been Martin Fierro and Rod Albin. Regardless, the way those two players were seemless and simpatico on Dark Star was pretty astounding. One would think they'

It's nice to know I have something to look forward to in my declining years. I'll be my Dad's age (76) in 22 years. But that's a stretch!

If you can locate it definitely seek out "Those Who Know History Are Doomed To Repeat It" (1988). I don't think it ever came out on CD. It's a bizarre, wonderful LP - the obvious centerpiece being a 30 minute Dark Star > Other One combo, which has one of the best psychedelic electric violin solos around.
-
I'm a big Dark Star > Dew freak. I think that's the quintessential Dead combo. There's about a dozen of 'em (5/18/72 - 10/18 74). I think I've heard all versions. About half of those are officially released.

Isn't it just a wonderful thing? I don't think any of those 3 songs in the set qualify for "best ever" status. But just that there were 3 consecutive 30 minute songs that made up the set - all played to a very very high degree of proficiency - makes it arguably the best set ever done. I don't even know that I would agree, but I'm just throwing that out there.

I've went back to that show too many times to count. It's worth mentioning that it was the very first pick from '77. Kind of an 'under the radar' show at the time. But a great pick - one of the truly monster Sugarees from a month that has a number of 'em. A quick look at the DeadBase (I never remembered hearing one) says no on both counts. Weird!

You NEED Dick's #3 (5/22)! If only for the sequence of Eyes > Wharf Rat > Terrapin (Inspiration!) > Dew. 4 killer Jerry songs IN A ROW.

Impressive. God, I wonder how many are mine I played the first CD from 4/2/73 fir my wife last night. I knew it would be in her wheelhouse - tight, focused playing, song-based, no freakout feedback scenarios, etc. She loved it. The thing that jumped right out at me was Weir - man that dude was at a real peak in this set, just incredible. Definite MVP status.

Here's the thing: they (GD) have known about the story of these tapes forever, and it was always the company line that they would NOT pay for their own intellectual property - which in my view is the correct course to take, even if *legally* speaking they did not own them. But they got 'em back, and what we want to know is how. Back before I'd heard much if not all of these shows I was always of the mind to say set 1 Buffalo and set 2 Cornell would make a perfect show for me.

The oddest things that happened to you at a concert
mountain bed replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
Hmmm..as far as the "Most Stoned Ever" (pot division) goes, I went to The Creek for a Roger Waters show in Fall '06. I had a friend camping at a place really close to Deer Creek so my wife and I met him and his friends there. Before the show I was home doing yard work, middle of the day, drinking IPAs. All of a sudden it was "We gotta go meet everybody!" so down the road we went. We hook up with our friends, hang out, drink more beer, smoke up. I realize I forgot to eat before we left! Well...my buddy and his old lady just happened to have a pan of brownies to share. Yay! I'm starved. I eat -

Nevermind the story of the show (which in and of itself sounds cool as fuck) but meeting Bralove for a drink after a show is off the charts! Most excellent! I know I've said this before, but I went to exactly ONE Rosemont show (GD, 4/13/88) and decided I would never return. It was the biggest shithole arena ever. I loved the 70s! -
I saw Esau only a half dozen times at the most. Pretty sure the last Esau was Shoreline 10/87 but I'll look it up! I consider Esau to be a much under-appreciated song, for the reasons you mention. Although it never really "went somewhere" I consider it to be one of the more interesting first set Weir songs from the period. Typical Weir - very strong on rhythm, a bit short on melody, no really catchy chorus, but still very uniquely his vision. The story (as I see it) - Vietnam, where one brother goes to war and the other 'minds the store' at home, may not resonate with anyone much if they're

Just for the sake of argument I'll go with November 1973, but yeah - February is mighty fine.

Wow! Phish announce a 13 show run at MSG for this summer!
mountain bed replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
I'm reminded of those late 80s/early 90s GD MSG runs."We set up shop, you come to us". Completely understandable. But if you're one of those "every show" people, can you even imagine what 2.5 weeks in NYC would cost? I daresay it might be a year's salary for me if you did it right. -
Absolutely. Agent provocateurs are a real and present danger. And we know how Nixon and Hoover used those to discredit the Left - which resulted in a landslide re-election for the most corrupt President in our lifetimes. Until now. We have to nip this in the bud as quickly as possible. If we stay cool one would have to believe that any conservative that sticks with POTUS for any length of time faces repercussions in '18.

A couple of quick things: first off, I could not be more proud of Jeff and Sue for exercising their constitutional right to make their voice heard. Many of us have done so as well, and it's so wonderful to know they're willing to get out there. They're not in a bubble. They know there's strength in all of us getting together. I feel compelled to mention Sue in particular - if anyone ever had a reason to stay home and maybe just make a Facebook comment...but NO. This is a really tough woman. Her husband is a blessed man. Secondly, I cannot stress how important it is in the court of public opi

I got a notice it had been sent. The length of time between a notice and having it in my hands has varied a bit over the years. I think the earliest was 2 days, the latest about 10-12. It's not easy - I try to be a patient man.
-
I got that one about the same time. If I recall correctly it even pre-dates the very first "One From The Vault" (Pre-Dick's) release (8/13/75) by a few months.

I might have told you this before, but a very close friend of mine from HS became one of Woody's pot dealers while they were both in college together (the same school my Mom went to, but dropped out and had me instead lol). He turned out ok - (Woody, not my friend).

About 30 years ago I got 45 minutes of filler as a bonus on a tape trade. It was HC Sunshine > Space > Bobby McGee, WRS Prelude > Eyes. I've been in love with this show ever since. Finally got the whole show on CD about 15 years ago. '73! I'm a bit perplexed why it wasn't 12/5 but that whole run is insane.
