  1. The 12/2 Playin has the best freakout Phil ever had on tape. That whole meltdown is one of my very favorite things they ever did.
  2. I disagree. I dig that they're so ambivalent about it. As far as 'honor their legacy' it could be argued that they did exactly that - I' thinking about many of Garcia's comments over the years ("I can dig totally falling apart in front of a big crowd"..."We always blow it at the big shows", etc.). 50 years ago they were playing Acid Tests - not exactly a professional enterprise there LOL! I actually kind of like the idea of totally winging it, and possibly sucking HARD (they didn't) in front of 70,000 people. Of course I didn't invest the money and emotion into going to the shows, so my opinio
  3. Awkward as it was I still had the best time listening to night 1 from Santa Clara. That is the wettest dream set list they have ever done.
  4. I watched the ppv on that show with one of my oldest dearest friends (and tour buddies) and my wife. About halfway through the tune I looked around and we were all singing together with tears in our eyes. Thank you, Trey. Thank you for caring that much, it means a lot to so many of us.
  5. Oh yes! With all the hype surrounding this current incarnation let's not forget about this one - my favorite of all the post Garcia lineups.
  6. This is EXACTLY how I know I would feel (especially after listening to a couple of shows), which is why I didn't make the 4 hour drive to see 'em in Cbus last week.
  7. I agree with BobLamonta, too. That was a really good post. Regarding The Q - man that bands was on another planet then! I loved it - it could be exhausting but I really dug it. JW try out the 7/15/01 Deer Creek show, that was a really good one! Better than the "Brooklyn Bridge" from 4/17/71?
  8. I have maybe a half dozen Other Ones shows from '98 that get aired out on occasion (mostly at work, on cassette), and maybe a dozen Q shows (mostly from '01, when they were KILLING) that get played here, but it's about 95% GD for me. I probably listen to about 40 hours of GD a week. No Ratdog whatsoever.
  9. All I will say is this - if my boy Steven ain't on the drums the whole thing is a fucking farce.
  10. I saw this today and posted in a few FB pages. Best laugh I had in a week.
  11. The playing is fine all the way around. The only thing that grates is Weir singing Jerry's tunes. He just sprays the words around as he damn well pleases with no regard to metre or rhythm. Hey, we all know that NOBODY is going to sing it like The Big Guy, but there are certain tunes, like last night's Stella, that are (in my opinion) pretty "sacred", and if you're not going to give it the reverence it deserves then just do the fucker as an instrumental. I've seen the DNB do it like that (with Sless on pedal steel) and it was beautiful.
  12. I think I read somewhere that it'll be streaming for 24 hours.
  13. Still nothing in the mail for me. Sigh. Hopefully it will be today (Saturday).
  14. You guys won't regret it. #16 should be in the mail anyday now, and #17 is a killer.
  15. It was a year ago this month, if I recall correctly. Before I got into The Dead I was big into Cream - all that live stuff that got put out was SERIOUS jamming.
  16. Pretty nifty. I like their second take of Sittin - reminded me a lot of CC Rider.
  17. In my experience I've known a handful of female Zappa fans (including our VC lovely, JessFlick), but I have never EVER met a female KC fan. My old lady absolutely HATES Crimson, and she has pretty good taste in music.
  18. Yeah, I always referred to it as "Stronger Than Dirt" even though it's only barely close to the riff that's on Allah.
  19. I would agree that 76 is a totally different animal than 74, but there are many things about 76 that I really like, even moreso than 77. The set lists were really mixed up, for one - you could find some tunes placed almost anywhere in a set, compared with the much more organized sets from 77. The tempos WERE too slow at times, but you also could occasionally get some of the old style 74 space jams (the jam from Playin into The Wheel comes to mind).
  20. 12/31/89 - and yeah, that's a really good one! The Dark Star isn't long but it doesn't take long to get way out there. Plus ya get Airto guesting on Drums, always a plus.
  21. Picasso > Bucket. Yep I just said that. I liked Victim as well. That tune could get seriously weird - scary weird. I've probably said this here before, but Built To Last is probably my least favorite Garcia/Hunter song. That LP would have been much better off with Believe It Or Not. I really like that one.
