  1. 5/26 is almost a perfect show, imo. I'd get the 5/4 for the Dark Star, if nothing else. It's possibly my favorite from the tour. 5/18 has the very first (of an even dozen) Dark Star > Dew.
  2. This! You can't explain it to people. Although for some stupid reason I always try, I guess it's some sort of strange intellectual exercise. Or just a waste of time.
  3. It's a Hoosier thing. Sarcasm is in our DNA.
  4. He did look very uncomfortable. Maybe if he had a guitar around his neck he might have been more in command of the stage?
  5. I've said it before but Grohl is the Phil Collins of the New Millennium. A really good drummer from a very good band who goes solo, becomes a frontman, and churns out bland, boring music, and it gets to the point where you cannot turn on your TV without seeing his face.
  6. Beeler? We were talking about that CC Rider earlier today. That was my 1st show. Although as I told you tonight I wasn't really aware of how damn good that CC was at the time. But that whole show is worth a listen - the band seemed re-energized from the Europe Tour in the Fall, and lots of stuff from then to the end of '81 seems to have a nice spark.
  7. I gotta ask: did you ever see Renaissance at the Academy? Hey, feel free to tell us about any of the shows there!
  8. Cream "Goodbye" should be mentioned for the blistering take on "I'm So Glad". Just a prime slice of live Cream. And Badge is a stone cold classic.
  9. I don't think it's the best but it does have a certain 'finality' about it which makes it on the list.
  10. No kidding. Not including posthumous LPs that has to be one of the best headphone albums ever made. That's a GREAT choice. I listened to that record a LOT when it came out, it has a sentimental value to me.
  11. Well, Bob threw us a bit of a curveball tonight, but I would have expected nothing less! I would have hoped for a classic, but this ain't about me (or us). I'm still happy that the man still gets out there and does his thing.
  12. I listened to the Dave's #15 bonus disc a couple of weeks ago, but finally dug into the meat of the 3/26/72 show tonight (disc 2). I remember Lemuiex talking about how this was "transitional" Dead, that you could hear elements of Europe and Fall '71 in here. To be honest I thought it sounded a LOT like Europe until I got to The Other One. The odd thing about this one for me was I heard Pig on organ on a lot of the weirder parts of the jam, kind of unusual. The other thing was there were many passages where I not only thought of Fall '71, but even Spring '71 - especially what Bobby is doing, an
  13. The first thing that comes to mind was AC/DC (with Bon) opening for Nugent, 8/1/79. Highway To Hell had just came out, those guys were at their peak. It's hard for me to think of many more. Unless it's a double bill I usually skip the opener.
  14. I'd go with 5/23 if I can pick only one. Then 4/8. 4/26 has a WILD Other One that falls into a gorgeous Comes a Time.
  15. Oh man! Can you imagine? Like there hasn't been enough bitching about every damn thing already! "You wanted Dark Star - well here it is". LOL
  16. That's a pretty good example. I'll go with Suite Madame Blue by Styx.
  17. Interesting topic! Here goes: 5 - (1967) Rolling Stones 10 - (1972) Rolling Stones 15 - (1977) Led Zeppelin 20 - (1982) Yes 25 - (1987) Grateful Dead 30 - (1992) Grateful Dead 35 - (1997) Phish 40 - (2002) String Cheese Incident/David Nelson Band 45 - (2007) Wilco 50 - (2012) Grateful Dead 2015 Grateful Dead I tried to be representative. It's really been GD since about 1981. LOL
  18. Holy shit that setlist from Hemispheres to the end looks like Heaven on Earth, doesn't it?
  19. For me personally, the very essence of The Dead & the art of the segue is Dark Star > Dew. There were only 12 of 'em. All between 5/18/72 & 10/18/74. Interesting that the last one is during the "Retirement" shows at Winterland. Anyway...here they are: 5/18/72 5/23/72 8/24/72 9/21/72 10/18/72 11/13/72 12/15/72 9/11/73 10/19/73 - there's a Mind Left Body jam in between but wtf 2/24/74 9/10/74 10/18/74 Hey let's talk about this. Top 5?
  20. Awww, c'mon. "First thought, best thought".
  21. I'll try Rock first Quicksilver Messenger Service - Happy Trails Bob Dylan - HWY 61 Revisited Grateful Dead - Live Dead Allman Brothers - At Fillmore East David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name
  22. Obviously the first thing that comes to mind is "Longest Dark Star Ever" (at 48+ min.) but really that show is much much more than that.
