  1. Since we're in the middle (sorta) of This Week in Grateful Dead History I thought it was worth mentioning that Latvala thought enough of the late September '72 period that 3 of the 3 dozen releases were from between 9/17 and 9/27/72 ( I know 2 of the last 3 were posthumous but wtf they were working off his notes, as they still do!). 3 in ten days. 9/28 as well really sticks out in my mind as being worthy of official release. This isn't my favorite period personally but one would be silly not to note that the band was REALLY on right then. The jams are just frighteningly good.
  2. I became familiar with Wheeler through his work with my man Anthony Braxton. I had no idea he was that old! RIP
  3. I'm with WRP on 1973. Especially the Fall Tour - imo the best GD tour ever.
  4. Fripp was in his middle 50s when The ConstrucKtion of Light came out. "Essential"? Probably not. Still boldly going where no one has gone before? Definitely. Damn this is a HARD question!
  5. Yeah, Big RxR REALLY works acoustically, very bluegrassy. I'm a fan of that show. Check out the Dark Star from 9/19 on that run if you haven't already. With all due respect to fan favorite 2/13 it's probably my favorite version from 1970.
  6. Well HELL YES The Dead in 1972. But...no Public Enemy? I'm good with Wu-Tang, but PE MUST be one of the most important bands of the last 25+ years.
  7. What a lightning-quick mind he had! His comedic improvisational skills were unmatched. This is a big big loss.
  8. How very appropriate we start a new thread on this day. Thanks, Aman. I've been deep in a marathon this last week. So many glorious discoveries, still. First up - the bonus CD from Reckoning from the Beyond Description box.
  9. 20 minutes up the road from me. Fucking CARMEL, man. One of the wealthiest counties in the USA. Those people and their sense of entitlement disgust me.
  10. The Dead - Playin' In The Band from 12/2/73. When the song drifts into Space, what Phil Lesh does on the bass must be heard to be believed. It's one of the most brain-frying moments ever from a band who had a career full of them.
  11. 8/6 is a favorite of mine. Got the tapes early on and played the shit out of 'em.
  12. That, and the Hood made the night for me.
  13. This pretty much sums up my feelings. Aug. '93- Aug '96 is the shit for me.
  14. I saw that at Deer Creek. Half price tickets - my wife and I (whom I married just the day before) saw that for 20 bucks, total. Parking was free. Cracker stole the show for me.
  15. I'm pretty excited about the bonus material. In '72 all but about a half dozen of the 80 or so shows featured either Dark Star or The Other One. The 11/15 OKC show that's part of the bonus stuff was one of the shows that didn't have either tune, but instead we get a brain frying 30 minute Playin as the centerpiece of that show! I'm a Playin' guy so this is excellent news. I guess The Dead will be on the Billboard charts again then.
  16. Last night I heard (for the second time) what might just be the BEST GD tribute band I've ever caught live, and I've seen a lot of 'em. Out of Dallas, TX. Their name is Forgotten Space. Yo, Deadheads - if they come to your area do NOT miss 'em. The guitarist (Kenny) was a founding member of The New Bohemians, and he must have woodshedded like a motherfucker cause he was just KILLING it all night long. I saw some of the very best guitar playing I've seen in a LONG time, by anyone last night. The Rhythm guitarist (Hunter) is no slouch, either - he really knows those odd chords and voicings tha
  17. There are plenty of LPs I don't ever NEED to hear again (LZ IV, etc), but I'm at a loss to have one come to mind that 'doesn't hold up'.
  18. MORE than pretty good, I'd say! Best Vince-only Era show I saw. Consistent all the way through. Easily one of the better 1st sets of the last 3-4 years.
