  1. I am in no way the biggest Beatles fan here, but I think the Fabs should be exempt from this conversation. Undeniably the most influential band in popular music in the last 50 years. For me the '75>present Fleetwood Mac takes the cake. That shit just bores me to tears. And Stevie Nicks' voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Every time I hear it pop up on the radio I always think of the South Park episode with the goat.
  2. Sorry brah! I could probably name dozens of bands that should be in before them, just my opinion of course.
  3. You know if I didn't know you were just being facetious I'd come out to Denver and boink you on the fucking head with a tire iron. If there has EVER EVER been a band that should be in there it's Purple. Jesus Christ, that band set the template (along with Zeppelin) for every hard rock band that's ever followed. I heard something about Yes being in the running as well. WAY overdue. They were as big as it gets in the 70s.
  4. Dude, he's a FAN. Do you remember how Dick used to talk about shows? "The most important thing in the history of Mankind" and the like. If it's seen the light of day as an official release I trust these dudes (who have listened to more GD than I have, God love 'em) that it's not shit. And I do think this one is really really good.
  5. There are many MANY shows in the '83-'85 period that are among the finest the band ever played in the second half of their career. I could name a couple dozen at least, and I'm sure Lammy could as well. And I don't think Garcia was EVER "sober", with the exception of the post-coma period (maybe) through most of '87 (possibly). When he moved in with MG for that period that was probably as close as he came. But who cares, really? I saw Jerry many times where he was so high it was astounding that he could even remain horizontal, yet he played like a man who was a complete master of his craft.
  6. The Playin' is really really good. And I AM a huge fan of Playin'.
  7. If they're gonna do more '69 The Ark run (April 21-23) HAS to be considered. God I love those shows.
  8. Not sure how I feel about that, Calvino. If it's meticulously 'patched in' to preserve the continuity of the show I can deal with it, but I would much rather have a pure unadulterated SBD. I could have SWORN I heard a patch on one of the Dave's (I'm thinking it was #4 during the Help > Slip > Frank)? Anyone else hear this or am I going insane? (Don't answer that, it's obvious )
  9. STOKED! This one is a HOT show. I LOVE the early Brent Era!
  10. You can't go wrong with Skull Fuck as an introduction to the band. Great selection of tunes, mostly shorter in length (save for the Other One which takes up side 2). 1971 is a great year to get a newb interested imo.
  11. The great thing (imo) is there's something for everybody. Name your musical likes (or dislikes) and we'll be glad to steer ya in the right direction.
  12. Yeah. Fucking Bobby. Can you imagine how epic it would have been to get that Dew? But...if you want to hear an outstanding Dark Star > Dew from that period check out the Berkeley from 8/24 that I just mentioned above. It's incredible. Oh yeah. China > Rider from Fall '73 - Fall '74. Fucking AWESOME stuff. The 5/19/74 and Providence '74 are among my faves.
  13. I don't know if I could pin it down to one! I REALLY like 9/19/70 for that year, it's amazing. Others off the top of my head would include 4/22/69, 11/2/69, 11/7/71, 8/24/72, 11/19/72, 6/10/73, 9/11/74, and damn near any version from Fall '73.
  14. I got SSDD in the mail today. I was talking with Steve Silberman on his FB and when he told me among the essays there would be one by Johnny Dwork I fully expected the package to be the size of a refrigerator box.
  15. It might be the most fully realized version (along with the 2/27/69), I don't know. It's not my favorite, but it is outstanding.
  16. Let's put aside The Egos for a minute. That's what I've always called them - The Egos. Let's ask the question: what band(s) makes YOU go all stabby? For me - LA glam metal mid-80s generally, Poison specifically. That shit is MINDLESS. I just don't get it.
  17. I used to have a Leftover shirt that called it "Poly-Ethnic Cajun Slam Grass". LOL
  18. Yep, basically true. And a "favored one" for sure is none other than Neil. Without doing research, it seems like nearly everything Neil has done in the last 20+ years gets at least 4 stars, if not 5. Same with someone like Petty. Or Bruce. Hey, I'm glad these guys are still doin' it, they sure as hell don't have to, but not everything they put out is destined to be a 'classic'. Especially with Neil, and I consider myself to be a big fan.
  19. I would agree. Warren might be the closest to delivering some of what Garcia's voice brought. I saw him do a Stella (as an encore!) with P&F once and it was just beautiful. He also could REALLY sing the shit out of some Brent tunes - Just a Little Light comes to mind. I never gave that tune much consideration when Brent sang it but it was tailor made for Warren's voice imo.
  20. Yeah, I dug Donna quite a bit, as I mentioned previously. I liked Brent's "plinky" sound - very sharp attack with a quick decay. It really cuts through the mix nicely. As far as Jerry's singing goes - when your throat is coated with cocaine and tobacco smoke it doesn't make for the sweetest sound. Some nights it was more of a croak! But one thing we can't argue: Jerry's PITCH was spot-on 95% of the time from about '70 on. He easily had the best pitch of anyone in that band.
  21. This. There are VERY few "perfect" shows, and there are very few "bummer start to finish" shows as well. There are shows, entire tours even, that seem to lack in the magic department, but the thing is we always appreciate a good try. That's why we're Heads. Sometimes the clams are some of my favorite parts - it just shows that they're human. Hell, if I wanted perfection every night I'd go on tour with The Egos (I mean Eagles ). AND - if anyone ever hears of me doing that PLEASE KILL ME.
  22. Well...I'm from Indiana, so here's one: There was Frankie Lyman, Bobby Fuller, Mitch Ryder Jackie Wilson, Shangra-las, Young Rascals Spotlight on Martha Reeves Let's don't forget James Brown Rockin' in the USA
  23. Exactly. A lot of contempt regarding NoCal v SoCal. SF being perceived as naive and pretentious, and LA being show-biz and plastic. That's really the only time I've ever heard Jerry talk shit about other bands/musicians. Very out of character for him I'd say.
