  1. Well, we have to speak about the whole Artist/Entertainer thing. Many in the Rock idiom are not much more than entertainers - not necessarily a bad thing, but I prefer musical chops more than any 'presentation'. Of course the best of the best are both - Bowie certainly, Gabriel, a few others. I think of the GD as more of a Jazz mindset - they're just practicing their craft onstage, and looks or cheerleading the crowd ("It's SO GREAT to be here in Cleveland!") never figured into it.
  2. I saw the Sabbath show here last night and I was pleasantly surprised. Tony was playing wonderfully all night, soloing JUST the way you would hope him to. Geezer's fingers were flying all over that bass like a man half his age. And Ozzy...well he's still a frontman of note. I told my kid, "Damn Ozzy will MAKE you love him, even if you weren't really in the mood to". LOL Solid setlist, the 3 new tunes fit in very nicely among the old gems like Fairies and Snowblind. Really this was better than it had any right to be.
  3. Built To Last was the rare Garcia/Hunter tune that seemed kind of pedestrian to me. And I don't ever really need to hear Mexicali again.
  4. BOC is criminally underrated, as TP said. I love those guys. I saw them a few times in the late '70s/early 80s. Black and Blue Tour was THE best metal tour I ever saw. And "On your Feet Or On Your Knees" is one of my favorite live LPs. RIP Mr. Lanier. \m/
  5. Hell, I thought set 1 was pretty good. Stock, but pretty nice. I think every era has gems to be found. Even the Vince years - the Road Trips from Cal Expo (5/26/93) has a Playin' that must be hears to be believed. And the 6/28/92 show was a Top 10 all time in shows I saw (out of about 75). Hell, the 1st set from that night was one of the best 1st sets I ever personally saw.
  6. There's way too few full shows from '68 out there (as far as I know). Which is a shame - that year is fierce, just dripping with primordial psychedelic energy. There's probably a number of things from the Carousel, some Avalon stuff from the Fall. I would LOVE to get the Sky River Festival in HDCD (9/2/68). A favorite of mine. Maybe an "Odds and Ends" thing would be something that could happen. I'd love to see some '67 too.
  7. I have seen the DNB around 20 times, and they are, hands down, my very favorite band on the planet when it comes to doing the Americana slash psychedelic thing (outside of the GD, of course). I've had the great fortune to meet, hang out with, and even have dinner with the band over the years. David Nelson is WAY up on my list of musical heroes - Jerry's best man at his first wedding, 'partner-in-crime' since the age of 15, Jerry's buddy who took LSD with him for their first time, etc. He's a fucking American treasure. That original lineup: DN, Barry Sless, Mookie Siegel, Cowboy Billy Laymon,
  8. Here's another: "There's not a night goes by when I sing Panama Red that there isn't a spark of Jerry in that tune. Here was the guy who gave me the sense of what it was to do it on the highest level you could do it. Just a totally professional musician going for it all the time. Part of his legacy will be how the people who played with him live up to his highest musical ideals. That's something I feel very strongly about. I'm not going to play a note of music that doesn't have what Garcia would put behind it in his best way. He would be the guy to please." -Peter Rowan
  9. The Dylan quote is mind-blowing. For one of America's greatest icons to be so humbled in the presence of Garcia is just amazing.
  10. I have watched hundreds of hours of Garcia on film and I have NEVER, EVER seen him that animated. I mean, watch the 3rd (encore) set from 12/31/87 with the Nevilles and you will see him having a total blast, dancing and rocking back and forth, but this one just totally blows that one away! Thanks again for posting this one up, LC.
  11. I think I liked Lazy River Road the best of that last batch. Just some lovely fingerpicking on that tune. Plus I think it was kind of a love letter to Barbara Meier - who was as gorgeous and cool a woman as Garcia ever romanced. Thread the needle right through the eye The thread that runs so true All the others I let pass by I only wanted you Never cared for careless love But how your bright eyes glowed Way down down along Lazy River Road
  12. Why did the phrase "Snodgrass" fall out of circulation? IMO it should be used more often.
  13. Every time RS makes a list I get pissed. For example - Rush is a Top 5 live act and has been for nearly 40 years.
  14. "You KNOW I told ya (I know you told me) but you didn't listen to me (but I COULDN'T listen to ya) told ya about the anchovies (you KNOW what I'm talkin' about!) GEORGE DUKE!!! RIP George. You were a fucking virtuoso and a cool guy taboot.
  15. I've been plowing through the Dave's series the last few days (as part of the typical "All Jerry All The Time" ethos I usually adhere to from 8/1-/8/9. I thought I'd REALLY listen since I had a few days off to do so. A few thoughts: #1 (5/25/77) - solid (of course!) but not as inspired as the first half of the month. #2 (7/31/74) - LONG show, but WOW not on par with the month of June, or even the first week of August. They sound tired, and miscues abound. #3 (10/22/71) - possibly my favorite of the bunch. Everyone sounds totally re-energized by Keith's presence. And when you get stuff l
  16. I went ahead and pre-ordered even though you were very kind to me many years ago.
  17. You damn well better know when I'm a babbling old codger in the retirement village I'm gonna be flashing every woman within range.
  18. I always thought The Dead (in mostly acoustic settings) and Jerry in particular (with Old & In The Way) did very good interpretations of some pretty heavy religious tunes. Kind of odd, considering there's hardly a more hedonistic band than the Good Ol' GD. Why did they do 'em? Probably the main reason is a good tune is a good tune. And I kinda get off on listening to a bunch of acid crazies singing about Jesus.
  19. Holy shit there's Basil II! That's the guy who brought me over here - now everyone line up and give him a kick in his nether regions.
  20. AoxomoxoA, bitches. Yeah, that "A" was for Stewie.
  21. Wow. Live AND Everclear. Now if you can just throw in Creed there you have the Holy Trifecta of Shittastica.
