  1. They really are companion books and I've probably read Tortilla Flat more times than Cannery Row. A toss up for me, really, between the two.
  2. Two nice selections. I've always preferred Bukowski's poetry to his prose but that's a good read. I really like Fante's The Brotherhood of the Grape as his best, too, but Ask the Dust is excellent as well. Fante, of course, a hero of Bukowskis....
  3. Very difficult to select only 5 (I did 6) but these below have resonated very strongly with me: Cannery Row, John Steinbeck Peace Like A River, Leif Enger The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien The Great Shark Hunt, HST Don Quixote, Cervantes Moby Dick, Melville
  4. Claim would be a better operative word, I suppose.
  5. Didn't Courtney Love suggest that "Crush..." was written with her in mind?
  6. Ben Sheets may need elbow surgery. The TEX deal last week was nixed due to his injury: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...rtnerId=rss_mlb

  8. Garcia for many different reasons. His tone changed a bit throughout his career, too. His wah-wah phase was fun in the late 70s as was the slight distort of the late 60s. I actually liked the midi stuff he started doing in the 90s, too (some folks don't). Any way, his style was unique and the many tones he could conjour up was impressive and really made the tunes unique to those tones. Other favorites: Sonny Sharrock (technically fine-pointed yet free) Pat Metheny (ethereal) Jorma Kaukonen (dirty) Kurt Kirkwood (Meat Puppets) (intergalactic)
  9. And he's got only himself to blame for queering that deal.
  10. I've bought tons of tickets for under face from "scalpers," too. However, that's not scalping any more than buying a ticket at face value from a friend is.
  11. Hey! I listened to Aero-Plain twice last weekend. Good times. This a.m. : The Black Session, Jesus and Mary Chain
  12. Is that legitimate? They have the same three jobs listed for each team....
  13. Come on now. Everyone (including yourself) knew he juiced. The book detailed this. The conversations prior to this blurb on him were certainly valid and I don't think it changes the viewpoint of most people who had already made up their minds on how history will treat Bonds. Maybe it will for you, and that's cool, but overall I don't think it does for most people. However, I'm always up for the discussion. Though to most folks around here it's like that kinks song, "Back Where We Started," I'd imagine.
  14. All previous discourse on the subject can now be even more aptly applied, you mean.
  15. So now that it's been shown that he failed a drug test....
  16. I thought it was you that offered that there's no proof he took steroids. It may have been someone else in here, though. If he was the "greatest player" of his generation, it comes with a caveat, imo.
  17. Proof for the Bonds apologists? Probably still not good enough...: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3881897
  18. If the clownshoes are going to press charges how would they prove it was weed in the bong? Did Phelps admit it nwas herb or just say that he made a poor decision? The kid pleaded guilty to DUI not too long ago and that went under the radar for the most part. Weird.
  19. I'm thinking the latter but who knows. The defense will say he can't be trusted (character and all). Fwiw, no steroids/HGH have been detected yet, just that his DNA was found on the syringes.
  20. There is a guy in a listserve type group I'm in that had mentioned it and I asked for a link or verification as to the rumor and he hadn't got back to me so I threw it out over here. It's the only mention I had heard of it myself and the guy, albeit a staunch right-winger, is a very intelligent guy imo. Strange.
  21. FWIW, I thought it was a light-hearted back-and-forth as well. Maybe this is why I generally avoid the political threads.
  22. In conclusion from this sample size: No Democrats pay taxes. All Republicans pay taxes.
