I was teaching a psychology 1 class of mostly juniors and seniors with a few sophomores. The teacher next door came in and yelled, "Turn on your TV!". I got it on just before or just after the second plane hit. Strange that I can't remember. I do remember that shortly after I got the TV on we saw the 2nd plane. Live? My memory... It was surreal watching the endless replay of both planes hitting the Towers. The reaction of the students was subdued. They talked about how it didn't seem real. Some actually commented that it seemed like they were watching a movie or something. That class period

Man, does that bring back memories! When our youngest was about 9, she contracted lice. Wehad a devil if a time getting rid of them. We bought the product the pharmacist recommended but she still had lice (or was likely getting reinfested). My wife became so frustrated that she took the product that we had bought for the infested bedding and put it on our daughter's head! It said in large letters that it was for bedding and furniture only. Do not get in contact with skin! I pointed this out to my wife. With a fire in her eye she screamed, "I don't give a damn!" and di it anyway!! Good times,

Thank you for the congrats. I truly enjoy it. I know people with more years than I that do not enjoy it. How they keep it up, is beyond me... To address your question: That is a very interesting method of hiring principals. There is nothing remotely like that here. The school board does the actual appointment based on the recommendation of the superintendent. Sometimes it works, my current principal and the one prior, and sometimes it doesn't, most of the rest!

As a person who is in their 23rd year of teaching high school, I feel qualified to speak to this issue. It is true, in my district at least (but I assume that it is quite true most places because my district has a WEAK union), that 'bad' teachers stay in their jobs as long as they like. The only easy way to fire someone is if they commit a clear contract violation. Basically this means doing something illegal and/or immoral. To fire a teacher for 'poor teaching' very rarely happens because it needs to be properly documented, which is very time consuming for an administrator. There is also a lo

Sadly, neither by birth nor marriage am I a McCain. Therefore I need assistance. What is this "war" concept of which you speak?

mountain bed, they must have really been pumped about opening for the Stones. You say the Murat show was outstanding and I know that the next night in Asheville, 10/14/05, was stellar. Another one of my favorite shows that I sometimes think is my overall favorite. I contemplated going to the Indy show instead because the Murat Theatre reminded me of the Tampa Theatre but driving to NC trumped flying to IN!

We have never been represented so well as the past 8 years!! Ha ha!

It is a good example of states making unconstitutional laws ala Jim Crow. Am I equating an adult not being able sell their body and an adult not being allowed to drink with the dehumanizing laws of the post-reconstruction South? No. That doesn't make it any less wrong. Besides, the states are coerced into the 18 year old drinking age by the federal law regarding highway money. Cue Nelson Muntz laugh.

What you should be able to sell is your entire body. By that I mean prostitution. How a business transaction between 2 people is illegal when it involves the rightfully-owned property of the seller will never cease to boggle my mind. It boggles my mind as much as the illegality of an adult purchasing an alcoholic beverage. At the risk of offending, I must say, "WHAT THE FUCK!!".

Wonder twin powers, activate! Sorry. That popped into my head and I had to say it. The whole Palin choice is such a perfect example of politics. If the Dems. had picked a VP candidate with the exact same political experience and family issues, the Repubs. would be making so much hay that you could build the Bridge to Nowhere with the bales.

I can vouch for the Tampa Theatre show's excellence. I was there and have listened many times since. The Tampa Theatre is a 1926 movie palace and registered historic place. A perfect venue for Wilco in general and that lineup specifically. The boot is definitely worth having. I agree with the magical characterization and Less Than You Think back then was simply a great song. I also think very highly of that particular incarnation of the band. I feel fortunate that I was able to experience it live. As a huge S-K fan I agree about missing them and liking the Jicks but Janet not being utilized

Please! It was a gas line. God has absolutely zero interest in oil pipelines.
-
She also said "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that." -- Sarah Palin June 8, 2008. I don't care your view on the issues, a statement like that, if actually meant, is batshit crazy. Of course if only said to get the support of batshit crazies, then it is foxtail sly.

So you are playing percentages. That is likely true. If you, not bobbob but the reader, are a VCer that honestly, no bullshit, believes that Barack Obama secretly follows the teachings of Islam, reveal yourself! Please.
-
My wife and I enjoyed it also. We like the premise and are looking forward to living it vicariously. The first episode certainly had promise. I hope that it is fulfilled.

I have read all of this thread and gotten some laughs out of it. I have a serious question though it is likely futile to expect an honest answer since I suspect that some folks post things that they don't believe just to get a response. Here goes nothing anyway... Does anyone here at VC honestly, no bullshit, no having fun trying to get a reaction, actually believe that Barack Obama is secretly a member of the Muslim faith?
-
I liked hearing Pat and Jeff talk about Barack but damn, didn't that music sound good? Wow!
-
I also thank you for the laugh. That is some ultimate fanboy/girl stuff. I'd watch it! Why didn't you correct her spelling of 'henchmen' also? That doesn't look like a proper eyeroll.

SarahC, I was at that 0ct. '05 Asheville show. It remains one of my favorites out of many. What a set. I'll never forget Tweedy saying, "I'd like to say hello to Sarah C. I'm glad that you finally made it to a Wilco show" (or something like that) and thinking that's pretty cool. I wonder who she is. I am a high school teacher and have also turned a few students on to Wilco. Thank you for sharing a cool story and solving a mystery.

So you agree that the introduction says something other than 'the following is a best of list'? Who cares what it says? Introduction - something written at the beginning of a book explaining the contents, or said at the beginning of a speech. (dictionary.com) I'm just taking the piss, as my pal Dudley says. If you think that it's stupid and dumb then you think that it is stupid and dumb. Fair enough. It still isn't intended to be a 'best of' list. And actually, the introduction is the premise and that is what the list is based on. Still taking the piss.

The first time I bought a wilco CD it was AM. I had been a Uncle tupelo fan since No Depression and was excited to hear what the band sounded like with basically Tweedy at the helm. I totally dug it and have loved every Wilco album and Tweedy project ever since. The first time that I saw Wilco was the 22nd of July 1995 at Jannus Landing in St. Petersburg, FL. They opened for the Jayhawks. It was a fantastic show. I'd love to have a recording or at least have the set list. It isn't at wilcobase. Jannus is an outdoor courtyard and an excellent little venue. They played what we hoped to hear,

I'd be willing to risk a significant amount of money that the authors agree with my interpretation.

My wife and I like her. We have seen her 3 times and it was always excellent. A crack band and she is a talented entertainer. We haven't seen her in a few years though. She hasn't been around these parts but we never miss her.

You are a quite the wit. Forgive me for posting my interpretation of something on an internet message board. If you did read it and still feel that it's a "Best of" type list, then I assume that our reading comprehension differs.
