I am sure it is a fine collaboration. I have not bought either an Elton John LP or a Leon Russell LP (and I do mean LP since I was listening to both when they came out during the 60s and 70s.) in decades. Its an okay song, not that great really. I can say this...it is nice that the multi-billionaire Elton John is helping out the less rich Leon Russell (since he still plays club dates to what are probably half empty clubs these days..) so for that alone it is cool. Hearing from these old vets is cool, but buying their songs...I doubt it. As for timetables, see my Numero Group thread, (

If this was 20 years ago this would be sort of exciting. Now it barely makes a ripple for me. LouieB

Sundazed puts out great stuff and seems to have the finances to reissue an enormous amount of material. Numero is more select and finds some really crazy obscure material. For the album menioned here, they listened to the studios entire catelogue and culled out twenty some of the best tracks. Also they write the most amazing linernotes. LouieB

Okay, I am kind of partisian about the Numero Group. I stopped by their offices (!!??!?!) this week to pick up a few things I thought I needed and ended up with an LP can't stop listening to. We have talked repeatedly here about Numero's Eccentric Soul series, some of which should be in everyone's collection. They also put out some quirky and under appreciated music by little known groups and singers of the 60s and 70s and are about to release a huge box set of Chicago blues/soul figure Syl Johnson, but as I was leaving the owner Ken Shipley sold me an LP he felt was one of their best effor

...and a little richer... WXRT has been playing it in regular rotation. Very nice for all concerned. LouieB

Looks like this thread help them sell out whatever they had. Bummer. I bought a lightly used copy of Down with Wilco on vinyl at Pitchfork for $10 I think. LouieB

Very cool. Maybe he will perform with just one microphone. LouieB -
Kinda humourous huh? LouieB

in mono...and a bit scratchy... LouieB

Considering he is on Rounder records this time it is bound to sell more than they usually do, with some obvious exceptions. LouieB

I heard this interview too (old) and heard some of the material. It is decent. Only a big rock star could talk his way into three historic locations and make a record remincent of old material. At least this time he isn't selling his lead song to Chevy to get airplay. I guess he is hoping the older NPR crowd buys it instead. This is an "interesting" recording season for some old timers....Brian Wilson is riffing on Gershwin too. LouieB

The Robyn Hitchcock album is pretty cool. Glad it is still in print, if it is. It used to only available through his website. LouieB

Thank goodness for Wikipedia...there is no reason to talk about any of this stuff anymore... LouieB

There is a recording of him doing this song with Nora O'Connor. It is on a comp from one of the rock magazines. Very well done. LouieB

Richard Buckner - The Hill from spoon River anthology. Bob Dylan and Allen Ginsburg - some of William Blakes songs set to music (I do like Nantucket Sleighride....) How about Ophelia by The Band? Not sure. LouieB

There are literally thousands or even tens of thousands of cover versions of Dylan songs which is why he is a wealthy man. Don't forget he was covered from day one of his career, so tracking down even a small portion of them is a monumental task. Some off beat Dylan cover albums are Hamilton Camp's Paths of Victory (maybe the first Dylan cover album) and Duluth does Dylan. Volume I is better than volume II. I like Any Day Now by Joan Baez, but I am in the minority. There is an R&B, country, and Nod to Bob albums among others. There is an entire Byrds conp of just Dylan stuff. I rec

Murderers, Gunslingers, Outlaws, & Prison Songs

Did I say "On a Monday" by Ledbelly? It think I did. Both Arlo and Ry Cooder did good versions. The fun part of putting together a mix like this is going back to the source material and finding the original or closer to original versions. The Kingston Trio didn't probably know anyone who murdered someone (Hang down your head Tom Dooley), but Grayson and Whitter may have and they certainly were around when the Tom Dula story was all the talk of Wilkes County and that part of North Carolina. Likewise it is fun to listen to the Anthology to find where alot of the more staid and sophisitcated -

Gypsy Davy - countless versions including Woody Guthrie and Dave Alvin (a good one.) (and somewhat the source of Vincent Black Lightening...) I fought the Law - Bobby Fuller 4 plus many others or did someone mention that. Check out Blood in My Eyes on Dylan's World Gone Wrong or the original by Mississippi Sheiks Other stuff that is appropriate on that album too. I love this place...first I benignly suggest that the mix taper look to older material (pre-1960s) (much of which is the source later material anyway) and then someone rips me for suggesting that and then someone rips someone else f -
