  1. This is one thread I never visit, but I am curious if anyone has seen "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" yet. I am dying to see this flick..... LouieB
  2. It has been many years since I have seen this movie, but it has stuck with me ever since. The didactic political skits in between the music are somewhat irritating to be sure and a bit dated, but we have a portrait of the Stones creating one of the great songs of all times thanks to Jean Luc.... and as I recall there was some songwriting going on during IATTBYH as well...... LouieB
  3. For sure....and the clip I was refering to.... LouieB
  4. I donno... There is a pretty moving scene in Don't Look Back with Joan Baez singing Love is Just a Four Letter Word, while Dylan is picking away at a typewriter... Also nearly the entire movie of Sympathy for the Devil (One plus One??) involves working out all the permutations of the song. Boring perhaps, but an incredible insight into how music is made. LouieB
  5. Actually wanting more of John talking about Walmart or Pat showing more Poloroids is not the criticism of the movie. I am just not clear what having that in the movie has to do with Wilco being on tour. On the other hand seeing Glenn and Nels ice themselves down and the possibility of seeing Jeff get a steroid shot to help his voice....yea, now that is about being on tour. One other somewhat jarring image is the talk about Jeff's songwriting methodogy cut to a scene of him reviewing the setlist. That made no sense either. I was expecting to see Jeff working on a song or something.
  6. I think those two are pretty representive of them and a great place to start. LouieB
  7. Just personal here, but I can sort of understand the Beatles issue, but Blonde on Blonde?? LouieB
  8. Agreed... How about - And I followed her to the station, with her suitcase in my hand, Well, it's hard to tell, it's hard to tell, when all your love's in vain... LouieB

    Midwest in July?

It is certainly time for some Chicago dates. Wilco hasn't played to the hometown crowd since the residency over a year ago. (Not counting Lolla which is for tourists....) LouieB
  10. When did this thing come out?? Two years ago?? How can it be a classic?? You don't get these or you do? LouieB
  11. Wow, someone who has heard of the Baffler. At this stage of the game it is pretty clear that there are NO authentic original counter-culture. None. We are all bound to some sort of invented culture that was created by the mass communication industry. LouieB
  12. The Band actually wrote songs for adults..... and personally I can't imagine not liking them. I suppose it is not possible to "get" them, but I just can't imagine it. But then again, that's why these kinds of threads don't make sense since not everyone has to get every kind of music or song. LouieB
  13. Pet Sounds not the greatest album ever.....heresy... Just kidding of course. As one of the very few board members here who was actually a teenager when the Beach Boys were in their prime, I remember hearing them on the radio, when there were singles and that's how one learned about music. I have said this repeatedly here, the Beach Boys wrote music for kids, even when they were older it was still teen music. Now they perform for 50 and 60 year olds who want to think they are still kids. Pet Sounds is a great album, but the material on it is mostly about coming of age. if you no lo
  14. Wow...okay...well.. you may have to wait a few more years until he will have been 90. Ochs, while undoubtedly a great songwriter is dead and Pete is alive and thankfully well. Someone needs to call Billy Bragg..I am sure he would be happy to do a Phil Ochs tribute of some sort.... LouieB
  15. Everyone else re-releases their catalogues....it is a time honored ($$$$$$$$$$) tradition.... LouieB
  16. EVery few years we hash this one out...I agree with you, but Pet Sounds is not simply about the songs, it is about the sound. Beefheart....great but an aquired taste all around. LouieB
  17. Invisible Republic is not about Dylan. it is an interesting bookl but not the place to get biographical info. Listen to A-man..he knows all..... A better series of books is called Bob Dylan Performer, which talks about his recorded performances...all of them. But I would find a good bio and start there. LouieB
  18. LP can mean both. I would say from the past that there will be an LP and a CD and that LP also means it is more than a single. LouieB
  19. Thanks to the ops for moving this.... If you pay me enough I will give you the Wilco tour.... but since you are going to the Vic that is a major Wilco site anyway. Both Jeff and Wilco have played there many times. But then again Jeff and the individual Wilcos both past and present have played nearly every club in town at one time or another. I have not done dim sum in some time, but Three Happiness in Chinatown is a good standby. If you go to Argyle Street the Furama has decent dim sum too. LouieB
  20. Yes, but maybe you had to be there. Maybe it has not aged well.. LouieB Emma is not a classic. In fact in a couple years it will barely be remembered. LouieB
  21. Wilco Live at Cain's could have been a great movie in and of itself, with sound check, concert, talking to fans, exploring issues in American music (Jeff's comment about Hank Williams watching his songs chart the same way Madonna does was absolutely spot on....), talking about cool old American shit, etc. It would have saved the directors from having to go on the road and would have made the fans just as happy, not to mention that the feel of Cains was far better than any of the other venues except the Ryman, which of course pretty much trumps every other venue one can think of, but was filme
