Bob, Neil etc......still relevant in 2009?
LouieB replied to Wild Frank's topic in Someone Else's Song
The new Dylan single is pretty much the same as much of his recent work. Get a groove going and sing a bunch of nonsequitors to it. No one stays relevent forever, at some point they become revenant. LouieB -
Not from Chicago... I just don't. There are lots of rock groups from Chicago. Urge belonged to the Wicker Park scene, along with Liz Phair. My idea, just like any, has some holes. Whereas groups like Urge Overkill and Smashing Pumpkins were pretty much standard issue rock bands, Wilco, Califone, Sea and Cake, (Gastr del Sol, etc. etc.) I think of as having a bit more thought and conception behind them and not simply regular old rock bands. There was also a fairly important punk type scene that flourished a few years earlier and I don't consider that the same either. But many of t

Neko's parting (and maybe her entire relationship) with Bloodshot was not all that amicable. Perhaps that is why she says that. Being part of Bloodshot was in fact invaluable to her career, even though at this point she no longer needs them. That is alot and hardly any all at the same time. In another world she would have sold a few 100 thou by now. They are now regularly playing Maneater (I know that isn't the real name, but it sort of is and brings to mind the rather dreadful Hall and Oates single) on XRT. Although I like this tune alot, the refrain is ever so slighty silly. Perha

2/3 of them live in Chicago...it is up to you to figure which 2/3. To give a slightly longer answer, I am of the opinion that they represent the most famous branch of the great Chicago rock/post-rock school that started in the late 80s to early 90s. Other members would include Shrimp Boat, The Coctails, Seam, Tortoise, Califone, Red Red Meat, Eleventh Dream Day, the Handsome Family, the Sea and Cake, the Jesus Lizard and any number of early Bloodshot and Touch and Go and Thrill Jockey bands. I would NOT include the Smashing Pumpkins as part of this however, but that's just me. LouieB

That would be cool wouldn't it?? Totally accoustic. Strangely I was going to reply to some of the above posts about the digital download in the LP issue. This is a nice thing, but if you go too far outside the indie rock ghetto I don't believe this is being offered. Many kinds of music are simply not available on LP and some LPs don't come with downloads. Once again, for awhile this is going to be a feature of music buying, but after awhile, not so much. LouieB

There are times being old is a good thing....I remember when LPs (and 45s) were the only way you could buy music (pretty much.) Meanwhile I just went out yesterday and bought 13 Edison disks for a friend that looked in really good shape. Talk about slabs of vinyl....these fuckers can withstand a nuclear blast.....of course you have to have exactly the right kind of player since Edision didn't put out standard 10 inch 78s. Generally they were played on wind-up machines since much of America didn't have electricity when they came out. That was the ultimate friendly technology, but of course

For sure...you can get a deal on CDs within a couple weeks of them coming out through online dealers. LouieB

I have never bought an iTune in my life either, but I don't think folks here are typical music consumers. Those folks who do buy from iTunes want the thing to plug into there iPod and maybe can't even tell that the sound is not so good and could care less about the "extras". The convenience of a download is undeniable if all you want is the music and the convenience of instant music. LouieB

Holy Shit....I never thought he really would go. Too bad. Wonder what will happen to the Hideout, one of the greatest clubs ever. I guess things have to change, but when the Hideout got a makeover last year I wasn't too pleased, and it now it attracts a large hipster contingent. So it goes. Luckily I got to go to the Hideout hundreds of times. LouieB

Not all vinyls come with digital downloads, although admittedly more do now that used to. You can't download all those great used records that are available at record stores, resale shops, house sales, and picked out of garbage cans. VeeDee's new double vinyl came with a copy of the CD, so some artists are thinking really proactively. Downloads don't last forever either, so if you forget to download within a year you are screwed. Like everything, the vinyl resurgence is a trend.....not that it is going to end any time soon, because I am convinced it is the one thing that is keeping

A new album can't come out soon enough.... I am sure Jeff has plenty of dough to buy whatever clothes he wants and I am sure Sue would take him shopping if he wanted too.... LouieB

Actually vinyl did go away for awhile.

Not doing this at the moment, but I am sure I am not as liberal as I would like to be.... LouieB

The CD isn't dying. It is like everything else, it is showing its age. If anything the LP will die again first. Even the cassette tape seems to be making a bit of a resurgence. The only things we know are dead are cylanders and 78s and 8 tracks. Since the CD-R seems to continue to be viable, the pre-recorded CD won't go away. Certainly for new bands the CD is the way to go to get its work out, other than posting it for free mp3 wise. LouieB

I have seen Justin a couple times and both times he has been great. I just picked up his new album but have not had time to listen to it, but he thanks Jason on it, so they must have something going. LouieB

Albums that work best when listened to start to finish
LouieB replied to Moss's topic in Someone Else's Song
Finally a little humor. I so infrequently have time to listen to an entire album in a row unless I am in my car. But as long as we are making this goofy suggestion... A Love Supreme Tommy Quadrophenia Arthur albums with that actually have a theme.... LouieB -
It appears they are pushed back to May.....so it goes.... Support your local record store anyway...buy something else. LouieB
