  1. Not sure you are being ironic here, but not sure that domestic violence is really that fucking great, but okay..... LouieB
  2. Rather than another fest, I wish they had continued their magazine... LouieB
  3. Who??? What major record was mixed on shitty speakers? LouieB
  4. I must admit, I only visited Val's once in my life and while I found a thing or two there, it was wasn't nearly as good as most of the other record stores in the Chicago area. (I only went to the old one and haven't been to the new one...) There is a much nicer, better stocked store next door in Forest Park with lots of nice old and new vinyl and tons of CDs as well as a fun $1 vinyl bin with reasonably good stuff. No one talks about this place much, because Val has been an institution in Oak Park forever. Not to be a broken record (pun intended), but one visit to Lauries in Lincoln Squar
  5. Read some of my other comments and you may not agree. I think the most puzzling thing about this is that it was writen with Robert Hunter, not a slouch in the lyrics department. Maybe these too old guys just sat around smoking cigs and drinking beer and didn't really work that hard on it. It is a good album, but not great by any stretch of the imagination. As always, your average musician would kill to put out an album this good, but Dylan ain't an average musician. (Thank goodness the new Wilco album came out so we can stop talking about this one.... ) LouieB
  6. I am not really sure anyone has done this since the 60s or early 70s, by which time rock and roll was not being simply listened to by teenagers driving around in cars and many people had good stereos to listen to records on. This may have been done by the Beach Boys circa 1964, but I doubt much later than that. Havng not listened to this thing either through shitty computer speakers or any others (since I have not yet had the time to download this), I would suspect that we should reserve judgement on the sound of this album until a real one is bought. Downloads of leaked files are often not
  7. Okay, I'll give...someone please send me an easy link to download...thanks. LouieB lberkman@isbe.net
  8. Collecting is a thing (maybe an obession OCD style)so those who don't do it can't understand it. Some people collect books, some art, some dishes, others graphics, comic books, etc. etc. It is the collecting that is the rush. I totally defend indie stores, but if you read my post above what is really missing are the larger stores that carried everything so you could go get your Coldplay and not get dissed because they were in business to sell everything, not just the hip. Even I got dissed (nicely of course) at Laurie's not so long ago because I expressed vague interest in the new rec
  9. See my similar story above....some people just don't get it. LouieB
  10. You have a point...YEAH!!!! the return of the long lost cut out bin..... (But then again alot of that crap they are bound to sell at Best Buy I ain't gonna buy at 3 or 4 bucks anyway...... ) (But then again again if someone like me is browsing the cut out bins at Best Buy then I will be spending less time and money browsing at the local indie store.....so I am still not so sure this is a good thing.) 11. Actually i am sorry to see the larger independent (or semi-independent) record stores disappear. There was a time when those stores met everyone's needs every day with a full selection of all kinds of records, I mean all kinds of new records rock, blues, classical, folk, etc. etc. The sad part is those days are long gone. While the smaller indie stores are nice and i can go on all day about how much I like Laurie's, you can't really find that wide a range at Lauries, or any of the stores we have mentioned. Only Ameoba on the west coast even comes close (more than close they are amazing...),
  12. Robin- Please email me...lberkman@isbe.net I didn't get your address before the PM went down. Thanks. LouieB
  13. True, except we are not all a crap load older... I am certainly glad to see Mark and Gary finally decided to reform the old band. yeah!! LouieB
  14. And the 60s and the 50s and at least part of the 80s. (And the 40s and the 30s and the 20s....) Record store clerks can be jerks that's why I always shop at Laurie's Planet of Sound where NONE of the clerks are jerks.... LouieB
  15. Come with a parent, who needs to call ahead and make arrangements and maybe you can come. Some clubs are willing to make arrangements if you don't just show up and expect to get in. I can't wait.....a repeat of the Tonedeaf Brothers???? LouieB
  16. This Dream of You is just okay too. it is neither the best or worst on the album to be sure. I really liked Modern Times quite alot, more than this one actually, although I don't throw it on anymore. I liked the fact that many of the songs were obvious take offs on other songs. There is something also kind of creepy and subversive about the themes on Modern Times, whereas Together through Life is mostly pastiche. However I have to give Bobby credit for promoting some older song styles, so that if people starting listening to parlour songs again as a result of this album so be it. Those
  17. Best Buy selling vinyl (which actually they have been doing on a more limited scale for some time) is nothing but bad news for the indie record stores. I would love to think that this is a full scale resurgence of vinyl but this too shall pass. Best Buy will sell whatever will sell. Having run out the smaller stores that sold CDs now they can run the last of the smaller stores that kept vinyl in stock out of business too. The moral of the story...don't buy vinyl at Best Buy if you have an alternative. LouieB
  18. Skip the first 8 songs and listen to numbers 9 and 10 instead. I was going to write extensively on this later, but actually this album is alike a mediocre dinner with an excellent dessert. The final two numbers, while maybe not the greatest thing Dylan has ever done, redeems the entire album. After slogging through some okay songs, some better than others (the others being Jolene and Shake Shake Mama) and some others that are passible and one that clearly he gives Willie Dixon credit for because he knows Willie's estate will sue his ass when others won't, and listening to a bunch of songs t
  19. Wow, I completely forgot about the Wilbury's...my bad. Actually what I have heard from the Dylan/Harrision sessions doesn't sound like much. Maybe I don't have the good stuff. LouieB
  20. Oh you know...suing people takes forever.... LouieB
  21. Exactly....and Glenn needs his own movie someday... LouieB
  22. That's it...Underdog. XRT plays it non-stop. It reminds me of Thin Lizzy or something like that, but then I remember it is Spoon. Not a bad song, just played to death. LouieB
