  1. I will have to check out the California Clipper...never been. But I concur about the Hoyle Brothers, very fun honky tonk style band. This weekend is Fitzgeralds American Music Fest, which is always a good time and Fitz is one of the best clubs (not in) town. LouieB
  2. Yea, its the cover of the album. LouieB
  3. The one I saw was on the Peterson bus. I don't suppose they are going to advertise on the southside. LouieB
  4. Mt. Bed said as much too. Even in his heydays (including his time with the Jacksons) he was a cartoon of sorts (there was a Jackson 5 cartoon as I recall...), but there is something sort of catchy about his songs and there was certainly plenty that made him much more than just a singer (and dancer). Plenty of good singers have come and gone and not managed to garner the kind of attention Michael did. And he certainly had the kind of mightmare stage parent early career that made a basket case out of Brian Wilson. Both men never really matured and never figured out how to survive their ea
  5. I gotta ask, except for a few handful of demos that might have been left off the Anthology series and plenty of alternate takes that probably are inferior to the finished released songs, what is left to release? Of all artists that were bootlegged back during the golden age of such stuff, the Beatles had precious little that wasn't released. LouieB
  6. Sitting here listening to his records and reflecting on how well known and recognized he was makes me a touch sad, even if I was not his biggest fan. Meanwhile Brother Ray just keeps saying how much my copies of his LPs are worth and of course I tell him they really aren't since he sold millions of them. (My copy of Off the Wall, which is playing right this minute, cost me 99 cents.) Speaking of his money problems, I would guess that dying was a good career move on his part and that perhaps the run on his music will help the Jackson family get out from under the crushing debt he left. 7. Both of those artists (Wagner and particularly Ike Turner) are almost completely defined by the issues you mentioned. Ike Turner's musical history is extremely interesting and important, but he is almost always thought of as the guy who beat up Tina. LouieB
  8. I often recommend a trip to the Jazz Record Mart to out of towners and all Chicagoans who love music, even if they aren't into jazz and blues. Here is a really interesting article from today's New York Times. Even though I have been to the JRM many times (and in several locations) over the years, I still learned a few things about Bob Koester, the owner of Delmark and JRM. There is a great picture of Bob with Mike Bloomfield in this article and a funny if possibly apocryphal story about Iggy Pop too. LouieB Happily Seduced by the Blues By LARRY ROHTER Chicago BOB KOESTER came here

  10. Changing the subject somewhat I found this article in the NY Times particularly interesting today. I am sitting at home playing my copy of Thriller as I cut and paste this. LouieB After Jackson, Fame May Never Be the Same By DAVID SEGAL On Thursday night, a crowd gathered in Union Square in Manhattan for a fond and spontaneous memorial to Michael Jackson. A few hundred onlookers formed a circle, leaving enough space in the middle for the grandstanders and the brave to dance like the King of Pop. Or try to. Even the lamest moonwalk drew chants of “Mi-chael, Mi-chael!” Watching this sp
  11. I saw those guys last week...interesting... LouieB
  12. If you get this far and have some suggestions for others, PLEASE post them up. Alot of folks are coming to Chicago this summer and people find new stuff to do all the time. Thanks LouieB
  13. Unlike Elvis and Graceland, Michael was unable to hold on to Neverland due to money problems. I believe they had an auction off his stuff there. Too bad because that would have been something. LouieB
  14. Could be and one of these guys also owned the Buddy Holly Catelogue as well. LouieB
  15. Thanks...maybe I can now get rid of this extra Pavement LP.... LouieB
  16. As per usual, dying is a great career move. Jackson's albums are going like crazy on both iTunes and Amazon. I suspect that unlike Elvis, this won't last all that long, but maybe the Jackson family can at least pay off some of Michael's debts. Wouldn't it be great if they buried him in Gary? LouieB
  17. This pre-existing condition shit is exactly what we need to get rid of with health care reform. The man should have been able to get what has become relatively routine surgery and solved his pain. I don't really care how or why Jay passed away, but at least resolving this issue could easily have made his quality of life far better. For all of those who say Obama is just like Bush, at least he wants to do away with the issue of pre-existing conditions as a reason to deny people treatment. LouieB
  18. I don't know if this is the place to ask, but will the PM feature ever come back?? If not I have some record store merch I may not get to someone. LouieB
  19. Sorry, didn't have my digital camera this AM and frankly how exciting is this going to really be? But I will get on it as soon as possible anyway. I wonder how many buses the poster is actually on. LouieB
  20. Driving to work today I ended up behind a bus with a Wilco (The Album) ad on it. I guess Wilco has finally graduated to the big time, or at least more people in Chicago will know about them. Funny way to start the day. LouieB
  21. The rights to the songs don't stop them from being played. This is the Beatles we are talking about here, it isn't like we don't get to hear the songs. LouieB
  22. RIP to Michael....great talent, weird human being... Will have to drag out the Jackson 5 LPs today I guess. LouieB
  23. I think he owned the rights to the songs, not the movies. The songs are still played and covered so I doubt we will see more songs than there already are, but I could be wrong. LouieB
