Yesterday I stopped by a store near Midway Airport in Chicago that specializes in dance singles. Well I don't collect that stuff or even know that much about it, but the store was cool and I looked through the bins because sometimes shops like this have offbeat stuff that they sell cheap. Sure enough this one had a fairly beat up copy of Art Blakey Live at the Jazz Corner of the World Vol. 1. It was an original mono copy, I mean from way back. I also picked up a New Order LP that I didn't have (Brotherhood which is playing right now) and so I asked the owner how much for the Blakey and he s

Barak's association with Tony Rezko is getting even more attention after an interview with the Trib. While I support Obama, an entire adult lifetime in Chicago has taught me never to trust any Chicago or Illinois poltitian too far. Okay so maybe nothing illegal went on, but you can bet Barak still owed something to Tony for all his "help". For those in other states gushing about the new world Barak will usher in, don't get too carried away. Politics is a dirty dirty business and even this guy isn't exactly Mr. Clean by any stretch of the imagination. Meanwhile Barak and Hillary are going

No you really really don't.... LouieB

Yea, exactly. I grew up on AM radio.....no MP3 is going to ultimately sound shitter than AM radio in a car in mono. Most people any more don't even have full blown stereo systems with big speakers. Do they even sell them to anyone but audiophiles anymore? LouieB

Actually a bit of feedback from the original poster on what he wants would be nice at this point. There is honestly no reason to go on and on about a million different little schools of music if we don't know what he would like. Are we talking jazz here or improv music or fusion or what? Heck there is a really cool guy named Reginald Robinson who has revived ragtime, actually composing new peices and getting a McArthur genius grant in the process. There are repetory groups that play early jazz and ragtime sorts of material too. We didn't talk about the neo-swing movement of a few years a

I'll sing....(joke of course...) LouieB -
Waronwar is very conversant on post 60s jazz...I have been busy at work and just logging in on this now....but he knows what he is talking about..... All good suggestions on this thread. I was about to make a snarky comment that there is no good post 60s jazz but of course that is ridiculous (and untrue.) What is true is that after the mid-60s things do get a bit hazy however. So let's break it down a bit. Don't forget that lots of the "new thing" artists of the 60s (thos on Impulse and other indie jazz labels) were still practicing there art, such as Ornette, etc. So let's take this

I guess you either hate him or love him... LouieB -
Nesmith also has some solo albums that are also of varied quality.... But Propinquity, Susanne and a few other songs are great songs and were hits for others. LouieB

The old mens bathroom at the Velvet was truly a hazmat nightmare.... Well everywhere is non-smoking now, that goodness..... LouieB

I only caught a bit of them since I was pretty beat after staying for both headliners on Friday and Saturday. PE is one of the few rap acts that would get me to hang around..... LouieB

Fred is a great guy; I have spoken to him many times. The Velvet Lounge is a one of a kind place although I am ashamed to say I have not been to the new club which will sadly never have the ambiance of the old really dumpy one. I have not heard Fred play straight up in years. He is pretty much avant all the time any more. In fact I have seen him off and on for the past few decades and unless you call Coltrane inspired improvisation straight up, he does do some of that, but doesn't really do straight ahead at all; he is always on the sideroads..... I mentioned this before, but he got a g

Those two Atlantics are must haves in my estimation. I will check out the European tour. I have Afro-Blue live on Pablo which I have always liked. I have three Vangard LPs, all of which are good. I find it amusing that the audience sounds like about 20 people on them. Either the audience is unethusiastic or Trane just didn't really have a large audience in those days. LouieB

No, but alot of these folks are people we talk about all the time. Despite all this I am in.....ordered the cheapo tix today. I figure I can always unload or give away tickets at this price. It did sell out last year so what the hell. Having not seen PE in the early 90s it could be interesting, or it could be lame...hard to tell. LouieB

Wasn't trying to correct you..but don't want the new fans going to look for those great Columbia albums that don't exist... (unless you count the afforementioned Miles material.) I personally think the Atlantic albums are some of the best ever....not to be missed. Often times people talk about the Impulse material and forget about the earlier stuff. LouieB

I don't believe Coltrane was ever on Columbia (except as a sideman for Miles)....he was however on Atlantic, which are some first rate albums. His Prestige stuff is interesting as well. Coltrane's recordings are a cottage industry, with some rather off beat kinds of labels getting in the act. Heck there are even some cool live things on Pablo. I have not heard the Live in Europe Box set you refer to, but nearly anything live by Coltrane is worth a listen. LouieB

Well it is really old stuff and not very much in demand. I would say that Nesmith wrote about half a dozen classic songs (not all of which are on the First National Band albums) and the rest is sort of fair to middlin stuff, interesting, but not earth shaking. Don't let me disuade you though, since I kind of like them, but others did country rock better. LouieB

Jeez..this discussion ended quickly.....I guess we should go back to talking about the Kinks instead.... (or everyone's top 20 albums...) LouieB

That was actually a pretty horrendous night all in all. Strangely the front runners didn't do so well and some of the ones who should fall out did just fine, but what was with that country arrangement....yuck.. LouieB

Exactly...just get some of the Dial or Savoy masters.....(or alternates....whatever..) LouieB

Sure..I can go along with that... LouieB

I'll let you be in my dream if I can be in yours...(quote stolen...) LouieB

Generally he is mediocre at best, but that was okay... Meanwhile Castro was the pits...he needs to go. He lucked out last week picking a bullet proof song, but not so this week.... LouieB

Yea, okay fine.....but both years I have gone (when it was Pitchfork alone) there were enough acts that were recognizable to a geezer like me. Admittedly Pitchfork is pitched at an entirely different audience than I am but when I hear others here say they are not impressed I don't feel so far out of it. Heck last year not only did I know who was playing (not all the time of course) I actually owned albums by many of them. This year, not so much. I suspect there will be others coming into play I have heard of, but so far, not so much. LouieB
