Well we have highjacked this one good. So okay, the record stores are going all vinyl because it is hip and profitable and CDs are unhip and not profitable. So just as soon as vinyl wanes there will be a resurgence of CDs (trust me it will happen) and they will have to adjust. But at this point you can get anything you want (CD wise) on Amazon from the dealers, so the local hip vinyl stores just aren't going to carry product that doesn't move. LouieB

This is THE reason!!! Of course the usual right wing suspects here (and all the ones in Congress) think this is a good idea I am sure. Killing the USPS would effect millions of currect and retired employees, many of whom are minorties. It should be pointed out that the USPS is no longer a government agency, but sort of a semi private institution. It will be another 20 to 30 years before the last vestiges of old people who actually like getting mail are gone. And the catalogue and other direct mail folks can't be happy about this. Some stuff is just better through the mail, particularly d

The UT reissues aren't really RSD stuff since they are still in print. When I realized this I didn't buy them, although I still need to. LouieB

Great movie and great performance. Set off the Loretta Lynn revival of a few years back (and before Jack White.) Levon was good in The Right Stuff too.. LouieB

That's a good price. Go for it. The demand for some of the RSD merch isn't what was expected. The hype surrounding it will continue for awhile until it becomes obvious that the value of this stuff we are buying isn't really that high. LouieB

Yup, basic supply and demand curve. Somehow I managed to be in on the demand side. LouieB

Anodyne came out several years ago and the others just last year on Record Store Day. The box set of the singles was supposed to be limit, but seems like it is still around. LouieB

Why is anyone uptight about any negativity about Jay Farrar? I bear him no ill will, but much of his recent work is uninspiring to many people. I have not even bought his last couple albums because much of the stuff prior to that wasn't that thrilling (to me at least) and I don't see any need to keep supporting him. I take that back. I did buy some of his collaborative albums which were pretty fair. Trying to buy every single album by Jay may not be something most of us need to do anymore. With the reissue of UT's calalogue on both CD and LP as well as the UT singles, I think we all are

All the publicity on this issue is starting to bear some fruit, but no word yet on exactly how it is going to resolve. At least the wrecking ball may be out of the picture. LouieB

Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.

Just for fun, tell us what you did. LouieB -
I said this before, but I really kind of like the Cribs CD I picked up. LouieB

I just can't believe this album came out so many years ago. Where has the time gone? LouieB

In the case of photography, don't miss the downstairs photography gallery, which always has fantastic special exhibits. So in the case of a short visit, do the impressionists, upstairs, following thtrough to early 20th century and then head for a bathroom break in the basement and the photo exhibit, whatever it is. Also look for the Joseph Cornell boxes and check out the Chagall stained glass wiindow. For something you won't see anywhere else, check out the Thorne Rooms, which are miniature rooms from all eras or if you like Japanese prints, check those out. LouieB -
Which part, the Smiths or UT? LouieB

I find I am not so excited about new groups in general, but continue to be interested in groups where I know the band members even a bit personally. Since I feel like I know Wilco a bit personally I still like what they do. We have lost plenty of VCers who simply don't care for Wilco any longer, but meanwhile we pick up new obsessive fans. LouieB

That is very cool. LouieB

The day I went out and found it in this state the door to the basement was open and I walked in. It is now just a basement and certainly gave me the blues. From the pics on teh city's distressed property site the place does only bear a resemblence to what it would have then, but I think the point is that it is not ever going to represent what it did when Muddy lived there, nor should it. It could be fixed to be lived in by someone, or rehabbed as a small museum or community center or music school or something. There are all sorts of things that do happen if there is someone who wants to d

Small update for those interested. I have been contacted by at least two other reporters on this issue, so maybe it will catch a bit more fire before it fades away. LouieB

I would say you can see quite alot in a couple hours. Don't linger too long in front of anything, have a plan of where to go (there are maps on line I am sure), look out for the crowds (despite the steep admission there are always crowds), or try and find me before you go and I will loan you my card. Hey what is $23 anymore anyway. It costs more than that to just park downtown. But if you have just a limited amount of time, start with the Impressionists and move chronologically through the rooms to the more modern stuff. Then pick out some other exhibits and split. That alone will be a -

You really need to pick and choose before you go, or borrow a pass from someone so you don't have to pay for the admission. It really isn't worth going to for $23 bucks if you only have an hour or two. Sorry. But if you want to do it anyway, pick the galleries ahead (modern, impressionist, Asian, European, etc.) and hit them hard and fast. LouieB -
I love the piss break song topic. That should be a separate thread. Spiders was good piss break until the band finally changed it up recently and dropped some of the Krautrock trappings. But man, Jesus Etc. is still one of my faves even after all these years. LouieB

As with Uncle Tupelo, there is really no reason for a Smith's reunion other than the pricipal players needing a ton of money for their old age. Let's hope it never happens. LouieB

Actually Westmont has a fairly large black population now I think (edit - Wikipedia says even now it is only about 5% AFrican American.). Not sure about then though. Maybe Muddy just got tired of living in the city. The area was pretty rough in the 70s and he was getting old and his health wasn't so great. I highly recommend Robert Palmer's bio of Muddy I Can't Be Satisfied. I am pretty sure the move is discussed in that and Muddy is buried out that way too. (double edit- he is buried in Alsip, not Dupage Co.) After all this I need to reread parts of the book myself. Interesting about

Ah I see. Got the politics straight. He is nor your alderman though, right? I sort of know Toni, although she hardly would remember me from 25 years ago. I may send her an email. Thanks for the suggestion. It seems like there is a significant amount of interest in this at the moment, but a couple weeks down the road it may be necessary to ramp back up. LouieB

just talked to Alderman William Burns office and they are aware of the situation. We shall see. LouieB
