  1. Best of albums are just that. There is one of his Asylum years that has a bunch of great songs on it. Of the slightly later i would concure with Swordfishtombone or Raindogs. Mule Variations is some of the best of his later years. LouieB
  2. I knew David slightly back in the 70s. He was a friend of some friends of mine and wrote a wonderful poem about another friend. Bill Harris, who passed away in the late 70s. Some folks never get famous, but just keep doing what they do their whole lives. He wasn't so very old and this makes me sad. 3. I saw one of the bands back in the early 70s in London. I just remember the sound being terrible at the Hammermith or wherever I was. LouieB
  4. Yea, time to let them close the motherfucker down and let it all get sorted out in the realm of public opinion. As soon as people stop getting checks, have problems in the airports, have less teachers, etc, this thing will finally sort itself out. LouieB
  5. You can delete one of the threads I think. LouieB
  6. There is very little in the Waits catalogue you can go wrong with. I would start with the material from the 70s and work your way forward. All the Asylum material is great. I would stay away from the Early Years disks until later, but they are fun too. I would stay away from The Black Rider and both Alice and Blood Money at this point. All three are concept albums which have some weak material on them. Bad As Me from a couple years ago is great though. LouieB
  7. This sucks so badly. You know there guys are/ were world famous musicians that still sell plenty of records. just crazy. LouieB
  8. If you like wihiskey Delilahs is your place. LouieB
  9. Now it all makes sense. At least you aren't a chicken hawk. LouieB
  10. Of course he is worried about stuff that isn't going to happen. What do you think all that paranoia about the government taking his guns that are there to protect his family is all about? I guess I am lukewarm on the sequester. I don't relish the economy coming to a crashing halt, but maybe it needs to for a few weeks. Then maybe Congress will get serious about sensibly reducing the deficit and raising whatever kind of revenue is needed to support our big old bloated defense system. It is hard for me to worry about a war with China in 30 years too, since at the moment I think we can stil
  11. Now it is al lcoming clear: Hixter is a not only a gun enthusiast, but also al vet. So when and where did you serve? LouieB
  12. Oh yea, Delilahs. I second that if you want to go drink some serious whiskey. It is a short cab ride. If you have time on another night and want to go somewhere truly unique, hit the Green Mill in Uptown. Not near the Vic so not good for that night, but unchanged since before WWII. Often there is live music in the late afternoons or early evenings before the regular music starts; and the clinetele in the afternoon is a bit different than these other bars. LouieB.
  13. I hope someone chimes in on this because I don't drink much and don't go to restaurants in River North (which is why we need folks who visit here and do the tourist stuff to report back in.) Sheffields, up the street from the Vic is a pretty good bar as I remember, and someone I know recently had dinner in there and enjoyed it. I know Schubas as a great music club and has a nice bar in front. The L and L sounds kinda cool. (I have not been in Berlin in a few years, more like a few decades, but if you want of bit of adventure it is right around the corner from the Vic.) The area around th
  14. Hawks like Hixter don't care about debt. The Neo-Cons don't care about it either unless it is created from supporting sick, elderly, disabled, or school age children. All this talk about the national debt is just bullshit. Most politicians don't care. The cuts to the military are about jobs and contracts, not about national defense. We have a plenty big armed forces to subdue anyone if we so choose (just drop the big one...!!), the rest is just crap. Edit- Thanks for the update on our aircraft carriers. Glad to know that we are still way ahead of the Chinese. I will sleep better tonight
  15. Let's send out you guys with the guns out to defend us. You have the hardware, now all we need is the "well regulated militia" part and we don't have to worry about defense cuts. My other thought is, wow, so NOW we are going to have to ramp up our military spending to keep up with the Chinese since the Russians are no longer the problem. Or we can start up the draft again and get all those unemployed men and women in the militar, armed and working. Endless war; dig it. (side note- how mamy air craft carriers do we have comparted to China? Just curious I honestly don't know but I bet we
  16. The movie is really a bad way to remember Jay. There were happier times, but when you realize his tenure with the band wasn't all that long it is kind of sad. LouieB
  17. I am azmazed they have stayed reunioned this long. I guess everyone needs to make a living. LouieB
  18. Hagel wiil get the job. This is just a bunch of political bullshit at the moment. LouieB
  19. I figured you made a run at Wiki. That is what I would have done. I have a few Byrd albums, but none stand out for me. I kjnow I have Black Byrd, which is just okay. Wiki says it used to be Blue Note's biggest seller. But the Shorter ones that I have are all great. There is a semi--good book about Blue Note that I read a few years ago. It is truly astounding that one label was able to corner the market on this entire group of artists and put out uniformly excellent releases over so many years. LouieB
  20. Wow, you are really tracking this. I assume these are all on Blue Note with the usual stable including Herbie. LouieB
  21. True....and he was a pretty good sideman. LouieB
  22. I was interested in the Joni album but never pulled the trigger on it because of luke warm reviews. (Dave Douglas did an album with some of her material a long time ago, which is now impossible to find and I didn't get it either.) Big article on Wayne in the NY Times a couple weeks ago. Innteresting stuff, but i have also not bought any of his more recent albums. The old Blue Note material is pretty good though. Since this is a post about Donald Byrd, I found his more funk oriented material to not be that interesting. Some folks like it a whole lot though. LouieB
  23. Did I say this already? Apparently there is a short film about Muddy that was released about the time Robert Palmer's bio was published that has footage of Muddy and the band playing in the basement. I hope to seek it out soon, but I am told it is available through Netfix if not other outlets. LouieB
