Those Friends of NRA dinners must be the safest places in town, or the scariest, depending on your point of view. LouieB

I plan to make the Roscoe Mitchell show in a couple weeks at this new club. I had not seen the Kotche, etc. date until you just posted it, but I will definitely get some tix for that. This is a great new addition to the venues for experimental type music. I have not yet been but will report back when I do. The old venue when it was a theater got mixed reviews. Glenn had not been playing out much in the past couple years. It is good to see him back out in public doing this kind of show. Maybe he has more time now that the kids are a bit older and maybe because Wilco's schedule is less int

Hey I know. Those days seem so long ago. The fact that I have many friends now stricken with similar and other serious diseases reminds me every day. LouieB

Just so it is clear, I am not criticizing him that much. I enjoyed the Frames when I saw them. I just found his performance at the Hideout kind of dull. I think he his a talented guy for sure. LouieB

Very sad. As someone who remembers her from the original Mousketeers, I feel really old. LouieB

Not to reignite the gun control debate here, but I found this article in the NY Times yesterday kind of interesting. Clearly no meaningful controls of any sort are going to be forthcoming in the wake of the Newtown (or any past or future) shooting. LouieB April 6, 2013Don’t Know Much About Gun Laws By JOEL BENENSON and KATIE CONNOLLY IN polls, a slight majority of Americans consistently say that we need better enforcement of our gun laws. But there’s a problem with that: many don’t really know what our gun laws are. A large number think that federal laws require a background chec

Yikes.....snap. That does sound kind of cool actually. I like the guy, but he does take himself pretty seriously. LouieB

My nephew just got engaged to his long term boyfriend this weekend. Now let's hope Illinois passes marriage equality soon. DOMA may not be an abomination, but it is an idea which time has passed by. LouieB

Nearly six years since I posted a badly spelled post the last time and I have to say that Glenn Hansard who did a solo set at the Hideout Block Party last year, has gotten so boring. The Frames were a moderately interesting band and the Swell Season and the movie Once were pretty and fun, but he just isn't that important or that good by himself. Just my opinion really. Does he need a solo career and did Once deserve the Broadway musical treatment? Maybe I don't know. LouieB

Jeff Tweedy - May 16, 2003 - Martyr's, Chicago IL
LouieB replied to anthony's topic in After The Show
I think I recall being there, as in I was there. It was a good show. Haven't listened to it since. LouieB -
And how about Jeff Tweedy teams up with John Stirratt and Pat Sansone of Autumn Defense to produce a new album, and Jeff Tweedy teams up with MIkael Jogrensen's new group to produce a new album, and Jeff Tweedy teams up with Nels Cline to produce Nel's group or solo album, and Jeff Tweedy teams up with Glenn Kotche to produce his new solo album, etc.etc. I guess the combos are limitless. I may have posted this before, but this is taking place next weekend April 13, 2013 at Plumbers Hall In Chicago. More information and a $2 off is also on this site. If you are anywhere near Chicago and like LPs, this will be an event not to miss. I will be selling records with a friend so mention you are a VCer for an additional discount. Check out this little feature on some of the vendors, which I helped produce, This is going to be a seriously good time and a great way to support independent radio and buy some LPs. LouieB

Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.
LouieB replied to LouieB's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
The August 29th date with Jack DeJohnette, Muhal Richard Abrams, Larry Gray, Roscoe Mitchell and Henry Threadgill.may be the most exciting part of the line-up as far as I am concerned. Particularly seeing Abrams, Threadill, and Mitchell together will be an event not to be missed. These guys used to play together all the time in Chicago, but that was decades ago. So if you are coming to see Glenn, stay for this show as well; hopefully it will be as good as it seems it should be. LouieB -
Happy official 50th to the Rolling Stones!

That is cool news I was going to post this too. The entire summer schedule for Millennium Park is kind of confusing. LouieB -
Nels Cline & Jeff Parker Quartet Free Show Chicago Aug 8

Thanks for posting this up. I saw this on Facebook this morning. This is exciting. Nels has not played here outside of Wilco in a couple years. There is a bunch fo good stuff happening in Mllenium Park this summer including Jazz Fest, which will include some great acts too. More excuses to come to Chicago (if you don't live here) for something other than a Wilco show. LouieB -
I must be clueless but I have no idea what that means. After following these gun threads and hearing the anti- gun control arguments I am totally convinced that those opposing any type of control (and I am not refering to eliminating guns entirely) have the same basiic empathy gap that those who believe that gays have a right to marry; it won't effect anyone until they personally know someone who has been shot by someone who shouldn't have a gun. The fact that the argument goes that since we can't stop this completely we should do nothing about it has an unassailable logic to it. LouieB

Oopps...sorry. Mixed up who got these. It is not unsual if a private person is selling rare LPs to charge what the market will bear. Garage sales are people getting rid fo shit they don't want. People with knowledge of their record collections and selling stuff off is very different. LoueiB

Why does being old mean you are homophobic? I am older than most here and I haven't ever been homophobic and have known gay people for a very long time. Even though more people are out now, if you live in a reasonably cosmopolitan area you have to have run into gay people as neighbors, friends or relatives for years. Either that or you are totally clueless. What most "social" conservatives suffer from is empathy so they literally have to have someone in their own family such as a son or daughter to change their mind. How hard is it to figure out that regular people you don't know are reg

These are CDs Mr. Heartbreak is talking about I think. Not even half price books would put these LPs on sale for that little money. If they ARE LPs we should all be extremely jealous. LouieB

They will be sold out soon considering the small venues. I am hoping to pick up a Chicago ticket through CHIRP. Not sure how they got some tix, but they did. If I miss this it won't be the end of the world. I have seen them lots of times, including at the nearly livingroom sized Hideout. LouieB

Always a good day when that happens. Don't forget the CHIRP record sale on April 13. More about it later. LouieB
